Our local Knights of Columbus are again asking the
Community to come together to pray the Rosary on the 5th Sundays
of the month at the Old Mission. The rosary will be conducted this
weekend, immediately following all the Sunday masses.
Please join us on the patio in the garden area of the Mission.
Social Justice Ministry
Meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7 pm in the
Serra Center. Join us to learn what our new projects are,
and what you can do to help.
Our local Food Bank published a startling statistic
recently: one in six SLO County residents (46,000
people) lack access to enough nutritious food for an active
healthy life. Their mission of filling that gap has been
providing for our community for many years. Food dispersals
are not limited by income and are open to anyone who needs
help. We all can help through our donations to the Food Bank.
They can provide $10 worth of food for every $1 donated. All
donations go directly into programming that provides nutritious
food to those in need year round. Contribute online at
www.slofoodbank.org or mail a donation to
Food Bank Coalition, PO Box 2070, Paso Robles, CA 93447.
Also, if you have a backyard tree loaded with more fruit than
you can use or an over-producing vegetable garden, call 2384664. Their GleanSLO program will send volunteers to pick
your produce and get it to those who will be thrilled to have
delicious fresh food.

You may enjoy a ‘Conversation between a Catholic and a
Muslim’- two young men both working in the film industry.
It’s rather light but does make some good observations and is
not long or tedious. It focuses on some of the misconceptions
they encounter while working-one as an actor, the other as a
screenwriter. Both happen to be religious and they compare the
misconceptions about each other’s faith.
You may find you have heard some of the same comments in
your own experience.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the crowd, a man called
out to Jesus asking for help in a
family matter. The man wanted
his share of the family inheritance
from his brother. Jesus first made
it clear that he was not the man’s
arbitrator and refused to enter
the quarrel. But Jesus did use the
opportunity to teach the crowd
that placing too much emphasis on
the acquisition of material wealth
would lead to greed and greed
would lead to conflicts in families.
Jesus continued by making the
point that true security did not
exist in a surplus of goods when
he relayed a parable about a man
who had a bumper crop. So huge
was the harvest’s yield that the man
decided to tear down his storage
buildings and build new ones to
hold all his grain. Once everything
was stored, the man would have
no worries and could spend his life
without care. But God demanded
the man’s life that night and we are
left to wonder what good did all
the abundance do the man?

Parece cosa comúnmente aceptada hoy día que
todo el mundo quiere ganarse la lotería, ganar en el
casino o ser millonario. Esta actitud es similar a la
de los primeros oyentes de la parábola del agricultor
próspero que pensarían: Por supuesto. Él tenía que
buscar la manera de preservar su buena fortuna para
el futuro, para asegurarse una vida muelle, comiendo,
bebiendo y gozando. Es exactamente la clase de vida
que nos brindaría hoy el billete premiado, una buena
mano de cartas o la respuesta correcta en el programa
de TV. Estar rodeados por este “sentido común”
hace mucho más difícil escuchar hoy las palabras de
Cohélet, del salmista, de Pedro y de Jesús. Quizás nos
sonría la buena fortuna, quizás no. Pero si hacemos
que esa fortuna o su búsqueda sea el corazón, el centro
mismo de nuestra vida, viviremos para lamentarlo.

Decimoctavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
‘¡Insensato!’ Esta misma noche vas a
morir” (Lucas 12:20). ¡Esto no suena
misericordioso! En esta parábola de
Jesús, a diferencia de algunas personas
ricas de estos tiempos, no hay mención
de mentir, robar o engañar. El hombre
rico se ganaba la vida, no es un asesino.
¿Qué es lo que Jesús le quiere decir por
“insensato”? Primero, por arrogante. El
hombre rico diciendo loque va a hacer. Dios
no está a cargo de la situación sino el hombre
rico. Segundo, por egoísta. No hay mención de
Dios, del prójimo; él hombre rico se habla así mismo de
él mismo: ¡mis posesiones, mi productividad, mis planes!
Así que en lugar de desear “abundancia de bienes” para
nosotros; Jesús y el Papa Francisco en este Año Jubilar
de la Misericordia nos proponen crecer en aquello que
“vale ante Dios” (12:21), es decir las obras de misericordia
corporales y espirituales. Dar de comer, de beber, vestir
y sanar; visitar a los prisioneros, enterrar a los muertos.
Sanar con la misma gentileza de Jesús la duda, la
ignorancia y las culpas de los prójimos, confortar,
perdonar, ser paciente y orar por los vivos y los muertos..

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Del 1o al 5 de agosto los capitalinos en El Salvador celebran
la fiesta del Salvador del Mundo, cuando recuerdan la
Transfiguración de Jesús en el Monte Tabor. Como muchas
fiestas patronales en Latinoamérica esta semana está
llena de carnavales y desfiles. La celebración principal es
una procesión religiosa con la imagen de Jesús, el Divino
Salvador del mundo. La estatua de Jesús con sus brazos
extendidos en bendición es llevada desde la Basílica del
Sagrado Corazón hasta la Catedral Metropolitana. Vestida
de un rojo que recuerda su pasión, la imagen es cargada
sobre los hombros de una veintena de fieles. Al llegar
a la catedral la imagen patronal es puesta en una torre
de más de 20 metros de alto. Eventualmente la estatua
revestida de blanco aparece de una esfera encima de la
torre en medio de gritos, aplausos y cantos. Esta esfera azul
representa el mundo entero, mundo salvado por Cristo. La
transfiguración de esta imagen en San Salvador recuerda
la pasión y resurrección de Jesús, eventos claves que han
hecho de él, el Salvador del Mundo entero.
