THE MAY 2014 Are You Ready for Hurricane Season? In an emergency, it is best to have a plan. With hurricane season officially starting next month on June 1, UI reminds customers to take steps to prepare for summer storms. Here are things you should do: • If you or a member of your household has a serious illness or life threatening condition please call 800-722-5584 so we are aware of your power requirements for medical needs. If a member of your household is on life-sustaining electrical equipment, you should have an emergency plan for an outage. If they need emergency transportation to a hospital or other facilities with emergency generators, call 911. • C reate a family emergency plan. Be sure all family members know what to do. Decide where you will meet if separated, where you will seek shelter, and what to take with you if you must evacuate. Play it safe and ask to see the ID. Don’t let anyone in unless they can prove their identity or purpose. To confirm a UI employee’s identify, call 800-722-5584. Prepare a storm kit that includes a portable radio — batterypowered, or hand-crank or solar-powered. Include in it: flashlights, extra batteries, a manual can and bottle opener, a first-aid kit and any special medications. Also, have a 5- to 7-day supply of non-perishable foods that have high nutrition value and need little or no cooking. Have extra cash or travelers checks. Report downed power lines by calling 800-722-5584. • Home Generator: Any home generator that plugs into your home’s wiring should be connected via a transfer switch by a licensed electrician.
