LITURGY NOTES
In the reading from Acts of the Apostles today we
once again meet the “two men dressed in dazzling
white” as they question the disciples on the Mount of
the Ascension: “Why are you staring up in the sky?”
This question is much more than a simple inquiry; it
challenges those early disciples to stop standing
around looking about; it is time to get to work! The
gospel of Mark tells us the response of the disciples,
the Good News was preached everywhere.
Each of us hears the question of those in dazzling
garments and each must answer in our own way. But
answer we must. The life of a disciple of Christ is one
of mission, ministry, preaching, healing, teaching. The
power of the Holy Spirit is with us and leads and
guides us in mission.
Tuesday is the day I have long anticipated and at the
same time long feared. I will be moving on from St.
Joseph Parish that day to take up residence with the
community of Sacred Heart Parish in Chestertown,
MD. It is with a heavy heart that I leave you. I
conclude my time here with a sense that there is more
to be done but also the sense of peace that much has
been accomplished.
Comings and goings are part of the rhythm of life and I
leave here ready to embrace the new challenges that
await at Sacred Heart Parish and its mission, St. John
in Rock Hall. My time here has been rewarding,
enlightening, and an opportunity for growth personally
and professionally. I am indebted to all of you for
being such good teachers and examples of Christian
living. Your sense of parish and your stewardship of
God’s grace is profoundly apparent. Your desire to
pray well the liturgy of the Church is inspiring and will
remain as one of my fondest memories. And your
goodness to each other and to me is beyond what
words of appreciation can properly express.
Please know that I will keep you in my prayers and ask
that you occasionally remember me to God as well. I
am sure you will welcome Fr. Brady with open arms
and be for him the nurturing, nourishing community
you have been for me.
With thanks to God I also thank you and say farewell.
May God continue to bless and keep you and may your
living the Good News bring others to the love of Christ
that is so firmly planted in your hearts.
Fr. Grasing
PLEASE MAKE NOTE
Change to Mass Schedule for Summer
Once again this summer our parish will alter its Mass
schedule for the summer months. As with many
parishes in New Castle County, many of our
parishioners are able to take time for vacation and
recreation. The summer months take a toll in terms of
numbers in attendance and that, in turn, affects the
overall celebration of liturgy. Beginning next Sunday,
May 24, liturgies at St. Joseph Church will be
celebrated at 8:30am and 10:30am. The mass in
Spanish will be celebrated at 1:00PM. This schedule,
beginning on Memorial Day weekend will continue
through Sunday of Labor Day weekend (September 6).
There is no change in the schedule for St. Rose or
for Confessions and the Saturday evening liturgy (4:00
and 5:00pm respectively).

The Word in Our Lives:
Readings for May 24, 2015
Pentecost Sunday
First Reading: Acts 2:1-11
When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in
one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire
house in which they were. Then there appeared to them
tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one
of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit
and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled
them to proclaim.
Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven
staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large
crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them
speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in
amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are
speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in
his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites,
inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus
and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of
Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both
Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we
hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of
God.”
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34
Second Reading: 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13
Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,”
except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of
spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different
forms of service but the same Lord; there are different
workings but the same God who produces all of them
in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of
the Spirit is given for some benefit.
As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the
parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also
Christ.
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we
were all given to drink of one Spirit.
Gospel: Mark 16:15-20
Jesus said to his disciples: “Go into the whole world and
proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes
and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe
will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who
believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will
speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their
hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm
them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will
recover.”
So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken
up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.
But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the
Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through
accompanying signs.
La Palabra en Nuestra Vidas:
24 de Mayo de 2015
Domingo de Pentecostés
Primera Lectura: Hechos 2:1-11
inducía a expresarse.
Segunda Lectura: 1 Cor 12, 3b-7. 12-13
nosotros, seamos judíos o no judíos, esclavos o libres,
alejarse”.
Stewardship
It is with bittersweet emotion that we bid farewell this
week to our good shepherd and friend, Fr. Grasing.
While we wish him much good fortune in his new
endeavors and assignment, we are certainly going to
miss his presence at our parish. Fr. Grasing’s
leadership in finance council was one centered on
consistent and gentle reminders of what it means to be
a good steward. He would often joke that “I’m not the
numbers guy” however we all knew this was his
modest way of keeping the most important stewardship
message front & center at all times, and that is the
caring of souls in our parish and community. At the end
of the day, the impact that our stewardship efforts have
on people is what counts. That has been an inspiration
to me personally and an over-arching theme of this
column since starting it years ago… Awareness and
Impact. Where do our resources go and MOST
importantly, how does it change the lives of others? Fr.
Grasing has always kept an unrelenting laser focus on
stewardship qualities, including the importance of
being responsible, accountable, grateful, and sharing.
Through sharing, sacrifice, and thanksgiving, we not
only do well for others, we flourish as a parish and
bring ourselves happiness and satisfaction that are
beyond anything we ourselves could ask for or
imagine. On behalf of finance council, we thank Fr.
Grasing for all of his goodness, contributions, and
influence he has had on us.
The collection from last weekend was $15,684 toward
our weekly offertory goal of $15,865. This brings our
year-to-date total to $710,678 received toward our goal
of $713,925. Thank you for accepting the responsibility
of faithful stewardship.

¿A dónde van nuestros
consecuente, agradecido, y siempre compartir. A
nosotros.

Christian Formation
REGISTRATION INFORMATION
All of the forms necessary for Religious Education
registration for 2015-2016 summer and fall sessions are
now available on the parish website. The updated
Religious Education Registration forms for grades 1st
through 8th and the registration form for the
sacraments of Reconciliation & First Eucharist can be
filled out online. If your child has completed grade
level one and is enrolling in grade level two you must
complete a separate form to register for the
sacramental preparation of Reconciliation and
Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious
Education class registration and has a separate schedule
and fee.
Registrations and your preferred method of payment
are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. New
this year: a copy of the Diocesan “Form A: Annual
Consent and Release” must be filled out and submitted
for each student at the time of registration. Please note
that we have seven different sessions: four sessions that
follow a three hour time frame, two sessions that
follow a two and a half hour time frame, and one
session that follows a ninety minute time frame. As in
the past, confirmation of session selection will be
communicated via email. Registrations being paid with
a credit card may be faxed to the parish office; all
others must be mailed or brought in.
In addition, if your business would like to make a
donation of a product or services or perhaps sports
game tickets to be one of our nightly giveaways,
please let us know.
MARRIAGE MOMENTS
"This I command you: love one another." (John 15:17)
Love is such a squishy emotion. During good times it
comes easily. When do you find it hard to love your
beloved? Talk it through. Love anyway.
PARENTING POINTERS
As we remember Jesus ascending into heaven, perhaps
you and your child could "lift up" in prayer the
memory of deceased relatives who have gone to be
with God. Even though we don't know where
"heaven" is, children can watch a balloon or kite
ascend toward the heavens - and pray.

experienced many signs and wonders,
including the Ascension of the Lord
which we commemorate this weekend.
Bring It Home by making a point of
seeking the signs and wonders that
surround you each day this week. The disciples, who
often doubted, were told, “These signs will accompany
those who believe.” If you believe, does it become
easier to discover the signs of the work of the Lord
present in your life?
VOCATIONS REFLECTION
Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended to the
right hand of the Father, strengthening our hope of
being with God for eternity. Priests and religious bear
witness to that hope through vows and promises of
consecration. Is God calling you to live your life that
way? If you think so, call or write Father David Kelley,
Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations
(302-573-3113; [email protected]). Be sure to visit
our website: www.
