Mission Statement of the Viatorians / La Misión de los Viatorianos
The Pastor’s Corner/La Esquina Del Pastor
Dear Parishioners of St. Viator,
Estimados Parroquianos de San Viator,
I am writing to inform you that Dave Schlenbecker,
Director of Buildings and Grounds has offered his resignation effective November 30, 2011. I have reluctantly
accepted this resignation and have expressed my deep
appreciation for all that he has given to our parish community for many years. He has assured me that he will be
around to assist in whatever way possible and necessary. Dave
has made a significant difference in many ways and has provided professional leadership and direction always aware of
responding to the needs of the community.
He aceptado a regañadientes esta decisión y le he
At the same time, I have asked Tony DiSalvio to act as the
Facilities Director, effective December 1, 2011. He has agreed to
this shift and once again, I am most grateful for his willingness
to make the shift from Pastoral Associate. The position of
Pastoral Associate will be eliminated as of this same date. Many
of the responsibilities that Tony has accepted during these past
many months will remain with him in this new role.
We will be discussing these changes and others during our coming Staff Retreat this weekend. Fr. Tom Hickey, the pastor of Our
Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview will be our director/leader.
At this same time, Andrew Shelton will be leaving Youth
Ministry. There are many new opportunities for him to take
advantage of as he continues to grow in faith. He has faithfully
served our community well. I am most grateful for all of his
ministry and service across a broad spectrum of responsibilities.
Throughout the year, we provide a wide variety of activities,
many of which are community builders, where we make real, the
phrase of the Viatorian Mission; "to raise up communities where
faith is lived, deepened and celebrated.” Additionally, many of
these activities are scheduled to raise funds to help meet our
parish and school operating budget at the same time. Some of
these activities are initiated by the School Parents Association, or
by other parish organizations such as the Charismatic Prayer
Group, the Parish Finance Board, the Legion of Mary Group, the
Athletic Association, etc. At the same time, in order to succeed
in these ventures, there is a need for controlling policies required
by the parish to meet the City, Archdiocesesan, Insurance, etc.,
requirements. Finally we have a need for stronger and better
communication of our events and goals to our various publics,
including our active parishioners, home-bound or those who are
required to work on weekends, and school alumnae, as well as
the general public.
To help us accomplish these goals, we are very happy that
Melinda Reardon-Bustamante has agreed to take on these
responsibilities and provide coordinated and focused leadership.

donde se hace realidad, la frase de la Misión de los Viatorianos;
coordinado y enfocado.

GiveCentral Users
For the convenience of those who give their
weekly donation through GiveCentral and those who feel
awkward about the collection basket passing by and not
having anything to put into it...we have come up with a
special card that you can pick up in the table racks at the
entrance of the church. The card plainly states “I give
through GiveCentral”. Pick one up before Mass and you
can drop it into the collection basket as it passes by. The
cards will be recycled thereafter.
Also, on your upcoming monthly envelopes there will be a
new category added with a check box stating “I/We give
electronically”. You will then be able to drop the card or
the envelope into the basket. Thank you for giving
through GiveCentral and encourage others.

Annual Catholic Appeal Update
from the Archdiocese...
While the 2011 Appeal does not end until January 31, 2012,
it has already been a great asset in advancing the mission of
the Archdiocese of Chicago. Over $16,200,000 has been
paid to date. St. Viator Parish endorsement of the participation in the Appeal has been directly responsible for this
success. The parishioners of St. Viator have been generous
stewards of God’s gifts in ways that strengthen the Church.
Enclosed is the first installment on your rebate. This check
of $3,649.04 represents all funds collected through
September 30th in excess of your parish goal of $23,880.96
for the Appeal.
On behalf of the many beneficiaries of the Annual Catholic
Appeal, we extend our appreciation to the parishioners at St.
Viator for their extraordinary support.

Don’t forget our Food Pantry and Holiday Food Drive
In your weekly shopping, please don’t forget those who are less fortunate and especially in the upcoming holidays, as we prepare to supply families with Thanksgiving food baskets. Presently our food pantry here at St. Viator is in need of canned and dry goods of all kinds.
We are in particular need of canned fruits, meals with meat in them (beef stews, ravioli, chicken and beef soups, cereals, rice, pastas and
juices). For the holiday food baskets we need all the trimmings for a Thanksgiving dinner-instant mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberries,
sweet potatoes, stuffing mixes, pumpkin /fruit pie filling, pastry shell mixes, vegetables and whatever may go on your Thanksgiving
table. We will also need turkeys to be donated to put in the baskets. Deposit bins are located at the entrance of
the church. Thank you for helping those in need.

Jesucristo, Rey Del Universo
Entonces dirá también a los de la izquierda: 'Apártense de mí, malditos; vayan al fuego eterno, preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles;
y no me vistieron, enfermo y encarcelado y no me visitaron'.
Focus on the Gospel for next week
Gospel of Matthew 25: 31-46
Our Lord Jesus Christ The King
November 20, 2011
Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and
all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the
goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'
Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did
we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will
say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to
those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave
me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and
in prison, and you did not care for me.'
Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to
your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these
will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Andrew Shelton, Director

Spiritual accompaniment
The art of accompaniment is a thumb-line for youth ministry. The assumption that communicating Christ
requires us to employ his methods—in other words, to operate “incarnationally” in deference to God’s preference
for entering the world through human beings—comes close to functioning as dogma in the practice of youth
ministry. As our lives and our hearts become more closely aligned to Christ’s, young people experience Christ’s
suffering love for them through us. Youth ministry literature is close to univocal on this position. The
Incarnation has received more attention in youth ministry education than any other theological theme. Just as
God came to us in human form, the church is called to “imitate Christ” by translating God’s good news into
human forms as well. The goal of “incarnational” or “relational” ministry is not to be the savior for young
people, but to be transparent to the real Savior whose love shines within us, and is enacted through us. It is a
fallible plan, to be sure; God has more confidence in it than we do. Most of our “crash and burn” stories as you
leaders can be traced to our failure to point young people beyond ourselves to Jesus, or our failure to recognize
how filthy our theological windshields have become, as our best efforts to be transparent to Christ run afoul.
Unsure how to group relational ministry theologically, we often revert to developmental theory as a default
position, justifying our reliance on “relational ministry” as a strategy that addresses young people’s
developmental need for relationships, capitalizing on these relationships to convince youth of Jesus’ importance.
Spiritual accompaniment, of course, is more than this. Most of us are better acquainted with incarnational
strategies than incarnational theologies, but in fact these strategies are only possible when they flow from
Christ’s own self-emptying presence. Christ calls us to view teenagers as fellow travelers toward God rather than
as potential ideological converts” (OMG A Youth Ministry Handbook, Kenda Creasy Dean).

READING IS FUN!
Our first graders are enjoying reading every day. We are reading stories each day in class. Some of our favorite
authors are Eric Carle, Mo Willems, Frank Asch, and Melanie Watt. Guest readers visit our classroom every week
to read their favorite stories to us. Our class visits the school library once a week. The students choose a book,
visit with Miss Heidi, and do some fun activities. Three days a week, the students are involved in a special reading
activity. Some children visit the Reading Lab to read stories in literature that are a part of the Junior Great Books
program. A group of children visit our Title I classroom to develop their reading skills. Another group of students
reads stories and chapter books. Each month, students are assigned a book report. Our first book report is in the
shape of a visor that students can wear to show off their favorite story character. The best reading activity begins
in November. Hearts Club has 5 volunteers this year! On Tuesday afternoons, our volunteer readers visit and
share their love of reading. Our first grade students are blessed with many great opportunities to read each and
