Page 3 September 4, 2016 PASTOR’S REFLECTION Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 4, 2016 Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann RCIA JOURNEY OF FAITH Dear Friends, Taking up one’s cross and following Jesus simply means accepting life as it comes to us. In this way we imitate Jesus, who did not choose his cross but accepted the one prepared for Him. That is easier said than done, I know. But if we take time to unite ourselves to God in prayer each day, we will find God present even I life’s difficulties. Divine wisdom will boost human wisdom so that God can prosper the work of our hands. Human planning will be informed by the wisdom of God. Even a control freak can’t control everything and needs God’s guidance. So, pray as if all depends upon God. It does. Live as if all depends upon you. It does. And take up your cross as Christ’s disciple. Take time to refresh the life of the Spirit that has been given you. Then witness your faith like disciples and believers throughout the ages. Be assured of my prayers for you and for your dear ones. May the good Lord bless you with wisdom and peace. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro All adult Catholics who have not completed any of the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation) and all those who are not Catholic but would like to become Catholic are invited to join us for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults RCIA Journey of Faith. This Labor Day, the Church draws close to these families and expresses words of hope, said Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami, chairman of the U.S. bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development in the 2016 Labor Day statement. In the statement, Archbishop Wenski draws attention to Pope Francis’ recent address to the U.S. Congress, in which he highlighted the connection between economic pressures and stresses on the family. Archbishop Wenski in particular laments the struggles of those in communities with elevated rates of poverty, substance abuse, and the dissolution of the family. “The Church weeps with all of these families, with these children, whose homes and worlds are broken,” Archbishop Wenski said. While the United States is undergoing a difficult time with political tensions, fear, and anxiety, Archbishop Wenski challenges people to respond with faith and action. “For our dynamics to change, we must replace fear with a fuller vision that can be powerfully supported by our faith…the Church’s history is filled with communities that took seriously the call to be their ‘brother’s keeper’ (Gen. 4:9), faced challenges together, and lifted up the ‘cry of the poor’ (Psalm 34:7).” To those who are experiencing isolation and feel left behind in today’s economy, Archbishop Wenski offers assurance of the Church’s solidarity. He said, “For those who feel left behind today, know that the Church wants to walk with you, in the company of the God who formed your ‘inmost being’ and who knows that you are ‘wonderfully made.’ (Psalm 139:13-14).” The full text of the 2015 Labor Day statement is available online. Catholic Parish of St. John Neumann BELIEF IN ACTION CHANGES LIVES! This is no more evident than through Detention Ministry. Our own Deacon Ralph Gazitua, who along with Jim Perez, have seen their 29 years of faithfulness to this ministry change lives. This year more than 40 inmates at the Everglades Correctional Institution are participating in a newly formed RCIA group. Their hunger for the Lord, both those baptized Catholic and those wishing to enter fully into the faith, is a powerful sign of the blessings of this ongoing ministry. In addition to the regular Liturgy of the Word with Communion Services, the inmates will now have an opportunity to go to Mass at ECI thanks to many more people in the Diocese responding to God’s call to be present to ‘the least ones’ in our midst. Praise God and great thanks for all who serve. ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew25:40 If you would be interested in this most important Ministry contact Deacon Gazitua at 305-903-5295 or mark your calendar to attend the “Beyond Justice to Mercy” Detention Ministry Conference on September 24 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. For further information on the conference go to www.detentionministry.org/conference.html. “I was in prison and you visited me” – Matthew 25:36.
