Message From the Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians of Lincoln Middle School Students:
I’d like to begin by thanking the Lincoln community (parents, staff, business community,
etc.) for their incredible show of support at our January 14 th presentation to the board of
education of our Improvement Plan for 2014 – 2015. Lincoln supporters sent a powerful
message to our board and other Poudre schools that Lincoln is alive and thriving and ready
to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead of us. It will only be through this support that we can
reach our goals.
For those of you who may not have had a chance to attend or watch the board meeting on
1/14, we highlighted our major areas of focus for 2014 – 2015, though many of the pieces are
already in place for this school year. We are focusing on 1) providing rigorous and engaging
instruction to all student populations, 2) we are committed to frequent and formative
assessment to inform our instruction and to help us make wise decisions as to how to address
areas where our students may be struggling, and 3) we are providing daily, focused math and
literacy intervention support for students who have not yet met levels of proficiency in one or
both areas. I am very happy to report that as a result of interventions in place as of 2 nd quarter
and the hard work of Lincoln staff and students, 20 students have tested and shown through
data that they are now performing at grade level in math and literacy and have been exited
from their intervention and placed into an enrichment opportunity class.
We had a strong turnout to our Celebration of Learning event on the evening of January 16 th.
Prospective 5th grade students who are considering coming to Lincoln came out with their
parents to view the different programs and offering available throughout the school.
Ms. Bent’s Cultural Dance class put on a wonderful exhibition of Latin dancing for our
community, and the different grade levels had a variety of activities and exhibitions occurring
in the grade level pods. Thanks to Mr. Stack for coordinating that evening for us.
We are having Parent/Teacher conferences at Lincoln on Thursday, February 6 th from
3:00 – 6:00 p.m. While not required, we do encourage parents who have questions or
concerns about their student’s progress in any class or other issues to come in and meet with
teachers on this date.

Estimados Padres/Tutores de Estudiantes de la Escuela Secundaria Lincoln:
Me gustaría empezar agradeciendo a la comunidad de Lincoln (padres, personal, comunidad
de negocios, etc.) por su increíble muestra de apoyo en nuestra presentación del Plan de
Mejoramiento para 2014-2014 al comité de Educación el 14 de enero. Los partidarios de
Lincoln enviaron un poderoso mensaje a nuestro comité de educación y a otras escuelas del
distrito Poudre de que Lincoln está viva y floreciente u lista para afrontar cualquier reto que
se presente. Eso solo será a través de este apoyo que podamos alcanzar nuestras metas
Para aquellos que no tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir a la reunión del comité el 14 de enero,
hemos recalcado nuestras áreas importantes para 2014 – 2015, aunque muchas de las piezas
ya están en su lugar para este año escolar. Nos estamos enfocando en 1) proveer instrucción
rigurosa y atractiva a toda la población estudiantil, 2) estamos comprometidos a una
evaluación frecuente y formativa para informar de nuestra instrucción y ayudarnos a tomar
mejores decisiones en cuanto a abordar las áreas donde nuestros estudiantes puedas estar
batallando y 3) estamos ofreciendo a diario apoyo de intervención enfocada en matemáticas y
alfabetización para los estudiantes que no hayan alcanzado los niveles de competencia en una
o ambas áreas. Estoy muy contento de reportar que como resultado de esas intervenciones en
el 2o trimestre y el trabajo duro de los estudiantes y el personal de Lincoln, 20 alumnos han
sido evaluados y han mostrado a través de la información recabada que ello ya están en el
nivel apropiado para su grado en matemáticas y alfabetización, y han salido de su clase de
intervención y han sido colocados en clases de enriquecimiento.
Tuvimos una gran participación en nuestra Celebración del Aprendizaje la noche del 16 de
enero. Estudiantes del 5o grado que están considerando venir a Lincoln estuvieron aquí con
sus padres para ver los diferentes programas ofrecidos alrededor de toda la escuela. La clase
de Baile cultural de la Sra. Bent dio una maravillosa exhibición de baile latino para nuestra
comunidad y los diferentes niveles de grado tuvieron una gran variedad de actividades y
exhibiciones en sus respectivas áreas. Gracias al Sr. Stack por coordinar esa noche para
nosotros.
Tendremos nuestras conferencias de padres y maestros este jueves 6 de febrero de 3:00 – 6:00
p.m. Aunque no es necesario, les pedimos a los padres tener preguntas o comentarios acerca
del progreso de su estudiante en las clases u otras cuestiones y vengan a reunirse con los
maestros ese día.

6th Grade Wizards
6th grade book club just finished reading Counting By 7s, and will be
reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night next.
In English classes, 6th graders have been reading and analyzing short
stories exploring the question, “How are people influenced by
changes in their world?” They will sopn be writing their own
fictional short stories.

7th Grade Dragons
7th Grade Accelerated Math
Semester 2 started with a review of probability and
with a chance for the kids to demonstrate their understanding of probability through
the construction of carnival games. Students designed, built, and mathematically
explained the chances of winning their games. We had brilliantly designed spinners,
dice, coin flipping, matching and maze games. We have, since week two back,
jumped into a bit of pre-algebra with a unit titled “Expressions, Equations, and
Inequalities”. Ask your student to define a mathematical variable, a constant, and a
coefficient. Ask what it means to combine like terms, distribute into parentheses and
solve equations for the missing variable.
7th Grade Algebra
What is a function, you ask? Your 7th grade algebra student should be able to define a
mathematical function; add, subtract, and multiply functions; talk to you about parent
functions; find the domain and range of said parent functions; and explain how to go
between the four faces of a function (graphs, tables, equations, and words). Up next
will be constructing and deconstructing (interpreting) functions – not all of which
will be linear.
Science
Science has been really exciting the past month, and we’re going into more topics
that students are enthusiastic about. The last week of December, all science teachers
worked to put together a science fun week, where we had all students rotating
through different specialized days, including dissections, explosions, chemistry
reactions, and physics labs. The students loved it (and so did the teachers)!
In 7th Grade Science specifically, we are beginning body systems, which will be a
large unit that carries us into February. Students will learn about how the systems
work together, and the culminating project will be dissections with students.

English
The 7th grade English classes are beginning the book, A Long Walk to Water, which
takes place is Southern Sudan. Students will be reading this book in English classes
and learning about the about the culture and customs of Southern Sudan. The
geography classes are also covering Africa, and we will both work together to help
students transfer their knowledge. Along with this novel, students will begin their
study of argumentative writing.
Geography
7th Grade Geography students are asking themselves the question: What are our
responsibilities towards others as global citizens? We are specifically looking at the
challenges and struggles faced in the continent of Africa. Students will be
participating in a project called E-luminate Books of Hope where we will create
digital textbooks to send to a school in Africa. To learn more about E-luminate,

From Design Tech (Moudy)
If your student has Design Tech this semester, ask them what he/she is building for
their Structural Design Project! The 7th and 8th graders are building bunk beds,
skateboards, and bedroom furniture!

Matemáticas Aceleradas de 7o Grado
El Semestre 2 empezó con una revisión de probabilidad y con una oportunidad para

Ciencia
Ciencia ha sido muy emocionante el último mes y entraremos en más temas en los
cuales los estudiantes están entusiasmados. La última semana de diciembre, todos los
maestros de ciencia trabajaron para tener una semana divertida de ciencia todos
juntos, donde rotamos a todos los estudiantes a través de diferentes días
especializados, incluyendo disecciones, explosiones, reacciones químicas y
laboratorios de física. A los alumnos les encantó (y también a los maestros)!
Específicamente en Ciencia de 7o Grado, estamos empezando sistemas del cuerpo, la
cual es una unidad muy grande que nos llevara hasta febrero. Los estudiantes
aprenderán de como los sistemas trabajan juntos y el proyecto final será hacer
disecciones. Pregúnteles lo que están haciendo en clase y lea el boletín del próximo
mes para ver como estuvieron las disecciones!
Ingles
Las clases de 7o grado de inglés están empezando el libro A Long Walk to Water, el
cual toma lugar en el sur de Sudan. Lo estudiantes estarán leyendo este libro en sus
clases de inglés y aprenderán acerca de la cultura y costumbres del sur de Sudan. Las

8th Grade
All 8th graders are participating in a grade level book read, focusing on the novel
Night by Elie Wiesel. After studying heroism during quarter two, students are
examining literature as a record of human experience with a focus on standing up for
injustice and making a difference in the world. This might make for great
conversation around the dinner table.
English students are receiving homework packets every Monday, which are due
every Thursday. They should also be reading an independent WWII/Holocaust novel
on their own and be completing 1 to 2 sessions of Reading Plus on their own at home
or library.
Science Olympiad has officially started, and our Regional Competition is on
Saturday, February 22 @ Fossil Ridge High School. Contact Mrs. Easterlund for
more information.
Algebra students are encouraged to take the time and redo assessments where they
may have struggled. Makeups are only allowed on assessments. Please check
Pinnacle grade viewer to see if your student could benefit from this.
8o grado
Todos los alumnos de 8o grado están participando en una lectura a nivel de grado,
enfocándose en la novela Night by Elie Wiesel. Después de estudiar heroísmo en el
segundo trimestre, los alumnos examinan la literatura como testimonio de la

Computer Technology
Students in Mr. Benson’s computer classes recently tested their
typing skills in a school-wide competition. Although there is
no official “typing unit” in these classes, Mr. Benson likes to
use typing skill improvement as a supplemental activity.
All students competed but only a select few were crowned
class champions.

Not only was Jesse Schaub the class champion, he was also Lincoln’s school
champion. Jesse’s 113 words per minute score earned him the coveted Golden
Keyboard, on display in the Encore Hallway. Great work!
Spanish
Ms. Menendez’s Spanish Literacy classes (heritage speakers) and Ms. Radin’s
Spanish Level 1B classes (2nd language learners) are collaborating by reading books
in Spanish together. The Spanish Literacy students are teaching the second language
learners in the target language: Spanish. It is a great interactive means of Spanish
language acquisition for all our World Language students.
The Spanish Department has also integrated COLA which is a communicative
approach to language acquisition. Students see and hear a script in Spanish and then
learn the context through acting and drawing the story. They then use their own
drawings to retell the story orally and add original events to the story with the
learned language. After oral communication is achieved, students read and write the
story.
We also have an online textbook that your students can access at home. Your
students can practice Spanish anytime by going to www.vhlcentral.com and using
their login and password.

Los estudiantes en las clases de computadoras del Sr. Benson
probaron recientemente sus habilidades de escribir en
computadora en una competencia de toda la escuela. Aunque
no hay una “unidad oficial de escritura” en esas clases, al Sr.
Benson le gusta usar habilidades de escritura como una

Español
Las clases de la Sra. Menendez de español (para hispanohablantes) y las clases de la
Sra. Radin nivel 1B (2do idioma) están colaborando para leer libros en español

su segundo idioma: español. Es un gran medio interactivo de aprendizaje del idioma
español para todos nuestros estudiantes.
El Departamento de español también ha integrado COLA el cual es un enfoque
comunicativo de la adquisición del lenguaje. Los estudiantes ven y escuchan una
secuencia de comandos en español y entonces ellos aprenden el contexto a través
de actuar y dibujar la historia. A continuación usan sus propios dibujos para volver a
contar la historia oralmente y agregar eventos a la historia con el idioma aprendido.
Después de que se logra la comunicación oral, los estudiantes leen y escriben la
historia.

Technology Design Classes
Keep your fingers crossed! The Technology Department has
applied for two grants that offer a 3D printer to a Middle or
High School! Our Structural Design Projects are finishing up
and we are now building devices that transfer Mechanical
Energy. Parents: Please send Alkaline “D” and Rechargeable
“AA” size batteries to school for our next Project! If you’d like the “Drones R Us”
afterschool club to provide you with a RC quadcopter for ¼ of the cost of buying one
retail, stop in to Room 112!

PE/Health
Some 8th grade groups will begin using heart rate
monitors during PE class.
The students will be able to see how quickly their heart
rate changes in real time while wearing these
monitors. Additionally, students will learn how to
calculate their maximum heart rate as well as their target
heart rate zone. It is important for students to know what
moderate to vigorous exercise feels like, and why it is
important to keep their heart rate within the target heart rate zone! They will also
learn how to calculate their heart rate without using the monitors. We are excited to
use the monitors and we think the kids will learn a lot from them.
The PE department is continuing our quest to accumulate aerobic equipment for our
program. If you have an elliptical or treadmill that is no longer in use, please
consider donating it to Lincoln. Your donation would be tax-deductible and your
exercise equipment would get plenty of use! Many thanks go to our PTO for
providing us with funds that will assist us in our search!

Educación Física/Salud
Algunos grupos de 8o grado empezarán usando monitores
de latidos del corazón durante las clases de educación
física. Los estudiantes podrán ver que tan rápido sus latidos
cambian en tiempo real mientras usan esos
monitores. Además, los estudiantes aprenderán como
calcular su máximo latido de corazón así como también
encontrar su zona de frecuencia cardiaca. Es importante
para los alumnos saber que tan moderado o vigoroso el
ejercicio se siente y porque es importante mantener su
ritmo cardiaco entre la zona de frecuencia. Ellos aprenderán como calcular su ritmo
cardiaco si usar los monitores. Estamos muy emocionados de usar esos monitores y
pensamos que los alumnos aprenderán mucho con ellos
El departamento de Educación Física continúa la búsqueda para acumular equipos
aeróbicos para nuestro programa. Si usted tiene un elíptico o una caminadora que no
use, por favor considere donarla a Lincoln. Su donación será deducible de impuestos
y su equipo de ejercicios tendrá mucho uso. Muchas gracias a nuestro PTO por

Athletic News
Congratulations to all athletes who participated in Wrestling and Girls
Basketball. You represented Lincoln and our community well by demonstrating
good sportsmanship and commitment to your school.
We are currently in 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball season. I would like to
encourage everyone to come out and support our teams for one of their remaining

games and locations.
Tryouts for 7th and 8th grade girls Volleyball begin February 24. As a reminder,
students of all abilities are encouraged to participate in athletics through Lincoln
Middle School and/or through the city of Fort Collins. To be eligible, you must have
an up to date physical and passing grades.

Felicitaciones a todos los deportistas que participaron en las Luchas y en Basquetbol
Femenil. Representaron muy bien a Lincoln y a nuestra comunidad demostrando
buen espíritu deportivo y compromiso con su escuela.

Wellness News
Poudre School District and Channel 10 recently visited our school for an article on
our Exerlearning Lab here at Lincoln. Near the end of the 2012/2013 school year,
the Lincoln Middle School Wellness Committee with assistance from Exercise
4 Learning applied for and received an innovation grant of $25,000. The grant was
written to purchase an Exerlearning lab for Lincoln Middle School.
The goals of the innovation grant are to use the Exerlearning™ lab to increase
moderate-to-vigorous exercise to stimulate a brain response that will improve
behavior (Ratey, 2008), learning (Hillman, 2013), and fitness, and to help students
establish lifestyle skills that transcend school.

Noticias de Salud y Bienestar
El Distrito Escolar Poudre y el Canal 10, visitaron recientemente nuestra escuela para
hacer un artículo de nuestro Laboratorio Exerlearning aquí en Lincoln. Cerca del
final del año escolar 2012/2013, el Comité de Salud y Bienestar de la Escuela
Secundaria Lincoln con el apoyo de Exercise 4 Learning solicitaron y recibieron una
beca por innovación de $25,000. La beca fue escrita para comprar el Laboratorio
Exerlearning para la escuela Lincoln.

Costa Rica
Attention 6th Graders: You have studied the rainforest, but have you ever dreamed of
actually spending the night there? Do you long to see exotic animals like toucans and
monkeys up close and personal? If so, consider joining the 2015 Costa Rica trip for
Lincoln Middle School. Current sixth grade students interested in traveling to Costa
Rica next year should grab their parents and plan to attend an informational meeting
