Since we are working toward establishing a vision for our local Church in the coming years, it is important that everyone has the opportunity to share in the discussion and join in prayer. What can you do? Start by reading Bishop Donald J. Hying’s pastoral letter, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” which sets the stage for the issues to be discussed during the parish sessions. (View or download the bishop’s letter online at dcgary.ord/ synod.htm) Next, be sure to sign up as a participant at our parish session. Watch the bulletin for dates and times or contact the parish office for more information. As Bishop Hying notes in his pastoral letter, “I invite you to ponder these central parts of our common mission with me, lifting up our strengths and blessings but also acknowledging the challenges and raising the questions.” August 3: Wednesday, Weeday 7:00 am † Paul P. Simplicity is speaking and acting always with God alone in view. God is touching our lives at every moment of the day, and we are touching Him. He is particularly close to us in the Church, in the Sacraments and in the poor. If we wish to be sensitive to the presence of God in our lives, we have to recall His presence frequently. We have to give ourselves moments of stillness and reflection in the midst of our work and our lives, so that we can become more conscious that it is in God that we live and move and have our being at all times. We tend to think that we can provide for our own future, but the Gospel reminds us that the future is God’s. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being possessed by God. We belong to God and He can demand an accounting of us at any time. The only security we truly possess is a loving relationship with God. (Parts taken from Living Liturgy by Joyce Zimmerman, C.PP.S. & Deep Down Things by Richard McCullen, CM.) One Can – Make a Difference Next weekend (August 6th & 7th) there will be our monthly food collection in support of the Whiting Food Pantry. Your donations of canned and boxed food products, paper products and personal hygiene products can be placed on the pews or in the baskets at the center of church. I seek the reality of Him in my own soul, and I do not find it. Yet I am determined to seek my God. In my yearning to understand and look into the invisible things of God by means of created things, I pour out my soul within me. I have no other purpose henceforth but to reach my God.” Taken from St. Augustine’s Commentary of Psalm 41, 8. There is my vision for our school in a nutshell. Not just in the “faith” component I would like to focus on, but as a whole. This is one of the many things that make faith-based education great. Our ability to intertwine our Catholic identity and our mission so closely that the two become one. If we can successfully continue to search for God, with the fever and desire Jesus sought to save all of us, we will be in great shape! We have many resources available to do this; many support systems to help us along the way. The best part is, most of this support, help, and encouragement comes free of charge. It lies within each and every one of us just waiting to burst out. Like St. Augustine says this reflection, we need to remain determined to seek what we may not initially understand. It, like he says, is our only purpose. FOREVER BLUE AND GOLD STUNNING IMAGES Last Sunday’s TIMES captured the prominence of our church, identifying it as the: “Iconic Whiting Church”. It is an extremely complementary article. For those who do not receive the TIMES or who live beyond the circulation of the TIMES, simply check our Forever Blue and Gold Facebook page and click on the link to the article. Viewing the article will certainly bring back fond, positive memories of St. John. To bring the printed pictures to life, Father Jerry Stack ’60, will offer a guided tour of our church to all those interested. As a 1960 graduate of St. John School, Father Jerry can be considered a true authority on the history of St. John Church. Tours will be offered at 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 30 and 31. The Pierogi Fest is a wonderful event for the Whiting/Robertsdale Community.
