MISSIONARIES OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD
(C.PP.S.), WHOSE MEMBERS MINISTER IN THIS PARISH,
CELEBRATE THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR
FOUNDING IN 2015.
In the early days of their religious congregation, founded in 1815, Missionaries of the Precious Blood
preached parish missions throughout central Italy. In
those days a parish mission would last two weeks,
opening with the bishop or his representative meeting
the C.PP.S. Missionaries at the edge of town. They
would then process to the village church with all the
people following, accompanied by the sound of ringing church
bells. How are we opening our hearts today to welcome people
who may be bringing a very important message of faith to us?

PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
FROM THE BACK OF THE MISSALETTE.
The ultimate test of a Christian community’s liturgical life is whether it changes lives. Does our liturgy call us to be one with the
poor, to share our table with the hungry, to visit the sick, to embrace the dying? If so, then we are well on our way to being more
like Christ and our liturgy, no matter its style, is truly a foretaste
and a rehearsal of the eternal Jerusalem.
In the end, if the liturgy does not change us into becoming more
like Christ, then it is nothing but ritual fits and follies. So, let’s
celebrate the liturgy well so it may change our hearts and minds
and send us into the world to make a difference.
- from What’s the Smoke For? And Other Burning Questions
about Liturgy. By – Johan van Parys
Has our Liturgy changed your life?
If so, how? If not, why not?
TANIOUS’ STORY
This week read the CRS Rice Bowl story of five year old Tanious
Issa and his parents who are three of the two million people that
fled Syria due to the civil war. In 2011 the family’s house was
burned to the ground and the family lost everything. Like so many
of their neighbors, Tanious’ family made the difficult choice to
leave all they have ever known and move to Lebanon. Tanious
loves living in Lebanon, but because refugee life is tough, his father can’t find a job and the family struggles to pay for food and
rent.
FACTS TO CONSIDER:
The civil war in Syria has killed more than 100,000 people since
the violence began in March of 2011.
Nearly 3 million Syrians have fled their country since the civil war
began. Half of these refugees are children. An estimated 1 million
refugees are currently living in Lebanon.
In coordination with Church partners, CRS is providing lifesaving
assistance to 150,000 Syrian refugees across the Middle East.

how your donation strengthens and saves lives around the world.
WE PRAY: God our Creator, to those who are hungry and thirsty,
give food and drink.
To those who are not hungry and thirsty, give a hunger and thirst
for justice.
Help us to share in the creation of a more just and peaceful world.
We pray through Christ the Lord. Amen.
IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHOSE NAME SHOULD BE
REMOVED FROM EITHER OF OUR PRAYER LISTS,

The parish would like to thank the Rummage Sale Committee for
their generous donation. Thank you to all who donated,
volunteered and attended this event.
FOREVER BLUE AND GOLD
SEALED WITH THE GIFT!
This Sunday we are honored to have our Bishop, Donald J. Hying, visit St. John to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation upon
fifty-six young ladies and gentlemen who have been praying and
preparing for the Sacrament. We certainly welcome our new Bishop!
Bishop Hying is the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Gary. Can you
remember who confirmed you? Was it Bishop Grutka, Bishop
Gaughan or Bishop Melczek? For our seniors, do you remember
Bishop Noll? (Not the school.)
No matter the prelate, in the Rite of Confirmation you come before
the bishop with your sponsor, and your sponsor places his or her
hand on your right shoulder. The bishop confirms you by anointing you with chrism.
Finally, on the light side, if you read the Northwest Indiana Catholic, ask Bishop Hying what he did with the chicken? (If you do not
get the paper, subscribe to it tomorrow, it is worth it!)
