JULY 3, 2016
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
YOUR MERCIFUL LOVE, O GOD, WE HAVE RECEIVED IN THE MIDST OF YOUR TEMPLE. YOUR PRAISE, O GOD, LIKE YOUR NAME, REACHES THE ENDS OF THE EARTH;
YOUR RIGHT HAND IS FILLED WITH SAVING JUSTICE.
PSALM 48:10-11
Let us boast of nothing but the cross of Christ (2). Through it his grace and
power are made known to his servants (1). Tremendous deeds shall be performed in his name (Ps): the reign of God is proclaimed, peace is given as gift,
and the forces of sin are overcome (3).
FIRST READING—ISAIAH 66:10-14c
Rejoice and be glad for I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river,
and the wealth of nations like an overflowing torrent.
PSALM—PSALM 66
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
SECOND READING—GALATIANS 6:14-18
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
GOSPEL—LUKE 10:1-12
Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs
to bring his peace and proclaim the kingdom of God.
PLEASE
PRAY for the repose of the soul of the mother of Gary Frala, Frances Frala,
who passed into eternal life on June 16, 2016.
T REASURE
S
T
FROM OUR RADITIONS
Some say tomato—and some say tomahto—you know the old song. What
do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the
wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that "we're having
a baptism today," or maybe you say "we are having a christening." The proper
term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use
of "christening" in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting.
Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk.
Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than
getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being "Christ-ed." No
matter what you call it, there's always water involved, and then an anointing
with chrism—fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ's presence—
poured upon the brow as we say, "As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and
King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life."
So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you—even though you may
be squirming or sleeping—are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king.
This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak
the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is
the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a
baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more "Christ-ed."
No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation
of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ.
Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
O GOD,
who in the abasement of your Son have raised up a fallen
world, fill your faithful with holy joy, for on those you have rescued from
slavery to sin you bestow eternal gladness. Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God for ever and ever.
Amen.
PEACE
The greeting of peace at Mass
adds substance to a message of today's readings: peace is relational.
When we greet in peace the person
near us at Mass, we share the touch
of a handshake or embrace, sincere
eye contact, and friendly words.
The scriptures speak of a similar
peace. The first reading from Isaiah
describes the peace of the holy city,
Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and
comfort where the "LORD's power
shall be known to his servants" (Isaiah
66:14c).
The Christian understanding of
peace changes slightly. Paul writes of
the "peace and mercy" on all who are
created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those
who accept his disciples and their
message.
Peace is both an absence of strife
and a personal blessing. May we always and sincerely bring peace to our
own lives as we share it with others.

YOUNG ADULTS!
The NWA Frassati Society is an energetic group! We have some members who have recently graduated
from college and others who are
well established already. Some are
single and some married! There are
different events throughout the year some people come to mostly everything while others are only able to make a few events, so
there is no pressure either way! We would love to have you
join us sometime!
A brief summary of the different events that we host:
Mondays: Bible Study In Tontitown - St. Joseph's at 7:00
p.m. Bible study is our most regular event, and
we meet almost weekly.
Tuesdays: About once a month we meet at various locations for "Theology on Tap". At this event, we
invite someone to speak on an issue - some
recent issues have been the Supreme Court
ruling on gay marriage, cohabitation, prayer,
spiritual dry spells, etc.
Thursdays: About once a month we meet at various restaurants for "Feast with Frassati," a time for us
to eat and socialize with each other.
Other events: We have various other social events and service opportunities throughout the year. The
days vary depending on what the event is.
Each week we send out an e-mail to update
everyone in Frassati on upcoming events.

FOURTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
YOUTH MINISTRY
242 - High School Discipleship Group
We will meet every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

your service requirements for Confirmation.

We will need junior high and high school students to lead
groups at Vacation Bible School, August 1-5. Please contact
Lupe Lopez if you would like to help.
SCHOOL LUNCH UPGRADE
Beginning in August St. Joseph School will be leaving the
federal School Lunch Program. This is a unanimous decision
of the school board, Father Tyler, Mrs. Debbie Clark
(cafeteria supervisor), and Mr. Pohlmeier. Each year the program guidelines have become more restrictive which has
caused the quality of the food we can prepare to go down
and down. Leaving the program will allow us to prepare
much better meals for our students. However, our low income students will no longer have their meals reimbursed by
the government.
We believe it is essential to our mission as a Catholic school
to help low income students cover the cost of their meals.
This year we had 31 students who received free lunches and
11 students who received reduced lunches from the government program. We are asking school parents, St. Joseph
parishioners, and members of the broader community to
sponsor our needy students.
The cost to provide lunch for a free lunch student for an entire school year is $575. The cost to provide lunch for a reduced price student for an entire school year is $500. I ask
you to please consider sponsoring one child’s lunch for this
school year. If you would be willing to sponsor a child, please
contact Jason Pohlmeier (442-4554, [email protected])
or send a check at your convenience.

2016 OZARK CATHOLIC CONFERENCE
AUGUST 6, 2016
Why should I attend the Ozark

God is calling you to do more than

merciful, life-giving witness of that love to others.
Look around you and you will see a wounded world, a world
that has many pitfalls that can harm you and your family. It is
a world that needs more men and women of God to stand
up and imitate the heroic love of Christ.
We invite you to attend! The day will be both inspirational
and challenging. You will have an opportunity to hear outstanding speakers. See page 8 for more information on each
speaker.
