A huge and special thank you to all those who
prepared our worship space, welcomed our parishioners,
presided at our liturgies, set our altar, ushered those who came to worship,
ministered the Eucharist, read the Word of God, led us in song,
praised God with instrument and voice, served at our Masses,
took part in Lessons and Carols, rejoiced in the Messiah,
Lighted our trees, sold beautiful Christmas cards, provided our decorations.
All the readers, actors, and loving parents at our Pageant
and most of all, for all who prayed and celebrated with us.
You made our Advent and Christmas so special and I thank you all……
Welcome to Our Parish
The parish family of Sacred Hearts welcomes all who come here.
Regardless of a persons history, ethnicity, orientation, gender , age, or
race our doors are always open to all who come. We welcome you to
be a member of our community and to take part in all of our ministries,
activities, and worship.
If you would like to become a member of our parish you are welcome to fill out a registration / census form in
this bulletin. You are welcome to do so even if you only worship here occasionally or seasonally. We would
be happy to have you as a friend of our community.
If we can serve you in any way I invite you to be in touch by phone (283-0097) or by email
([email protected]).
This evening will be given by Fr. Mike Vetrano. He is our pastor and also an
advocate at the tribunal in our diocese. Advocates help those seeking annulments
to bring their case before the tribunal in a pastorally sensitive and compassionate
manner. This evening is geared for those who wonder about where they or a friend
or a family member stand with the church and will explain the various options open
to those who were married in the church and now wish to begin a new relationship
with the full blessing of the church.

Why Catholics Like Einstein and Need not be Afraid of Darwin
The supposed conflict between science and religion is a staple of
modern discourse. But does this conflict really exist? We shall
take a look at Darwin's theory of evolution and the question of
human origins; modern cosmology; the Galileo affair (which
history books still treat as the definitive parting of ways between
science and religion); and suggest ways of reading the creation
account in the Book of Genesis. The talk will take a cue from
the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon: A little science can
lead us away from God, while a fuller understanding of it leads
us back again.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
CONFIRMATION DATE: MAY 9, 2012 4:30 PM
Bishop Nelson
Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the
first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register
them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons
or some other Catholic School.
Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website:
www.shjmbasilica.org.
Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in
order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance
each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please
encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday
afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of
Religious Education in our community.
Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. For more information please call
OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS
Registration information leading toward placement at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic
School for September 2013 is now available at the school. Interested parents seeking admission for
their children in grades K-8 in Southampton and Pre-school for three and four year olds are
encouraged to call the school at 283-9140 to arrange an interview and tour of the school.
Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated at OLH beginning with the annual Pancake Breakfast on
Sunday, January 27. Events during the week will include Grandparents’ Day, the Oratorical Contest,
school liturgy and open house. Details will be available during the first week of January.
EDUCATION
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION
FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097.

It was the Jesuit theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who reminded us that Joy is the
infallible sign of the presence of God! Our mission this year will focus on how
Christians can find that joy, even in the difficulties and struggles of life. Joy, Hope, and
Peace can not only bring us happiness but is also the foundation for the ministries of the
church. St. Francis told his followers to Preach the gospel always! Use words only if
necessary! He understood that the gifts of the spiritual life are meant to be shared!
Plan to be with us for this Lenten mission.
Catholic Ministries Appeal—Almost to our Goal!
Keeping Our History
As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite everyone
to take a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a history of
our parish through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even video.
If you have and memorable images or reminders from our history please share them
with us. You may dedicate them to our archive or simply have us copy and return the
item to you. Who knows! Maybe you have a old movie clip that will remind us all of
part of SHJM history. For information contact Fr. Mike or Gina Arresta at the rectory.

what we shall be has not yet been

— 1 John 3:2a
“Jesus waits for us in this sacrament of love.” Pope John Paul II

Each Friday directly following the noon Mass
12:30-1:30 PM
“Come to Me all of you who are weary and find life
burdensome and I will refresh you…” “Cast all your
anxieties upon the One who cares for you…”
“My peace is my gift to you…” (Mt 11:28; 5:7, Jn 14:17)
CMA and Parish History Project
With just a few short weeks ago our Catholic Ministries Appeal total stands at $47,080, just a few
contributors short of our goal of $54,200! We began December at just a little over $45,000 but
some generous contributions have brought us close to our goal. The CMA is important to our diocese because it funds much needed programs in Catholic Charities, the education of new Priests
and Deacons, and support for our schools. It is important to our parish because when we reach our
goal we earn a substantial rebate to use right here in our own ministries. Making our goal this year
will bring more than $10,000 back here to Sacred Hearts. Could you be the one to put us over the
top with a generous Christmas gift to the appeal? Make a contribution today and help us reach our
goal!

HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!!
By María Dolores
