"Dig deep," he said over and over as the collection plate was passed down the pews. "Dig deep!" At the end of the service, a young boy tugged on the pastor's robe. "Did you get the money you needed for the church?" The reverend shook his head sadly. "I'm afraid we didn't dig deep enough today, young man." "I know just how you feel, Father. I've been in the back yard digging to China all summer, and I’m still not there either." It is that time of the year, summertime, when we begin investing your generous contributions to the “pink envelope” week after week. We will invest the funds of our Restoration and Maintenance collection into to various projects in and around our parish and schools. I would like to share with you now some of these projects that your generosity made possible. Before I do, however, I want to thank you so much for “digging deep” and making this possible. We try to be good stewards of the funds you share so generously with your parish. I would also like to thank Don Jackson and Chuck Schmidt who head up our facilities office, and of course to Robert Rowan and our parish facilities committee. The list of projects each summer begins in the fall in September and goes to June when school is out. The list is gone over and discussed monthly, along with the numbers of the cost for each and their need and importance. I think we care well for the many buildings and property that make up St. Mary’s and St. John Neumann. I will share some of the projects that will be worked on during these summer months and we will share pictures with you to see their progress as we go forward. Some will be very visible and easy to see, and others will be relatively unseen but required and necessary nonetheless. Once again, thank you for making this possible! St. Mary’s Parish Ranger Rosary This story was shared by the family who coordinates the rosary distribution at the West Point Military Academy baccalaureate Mass. “While visiting my grandchildren in Annapolis last weekend, we attended mass at Saint John Neumann. My seven year old grandson, Michael, noticed two midshipmen coming back from receiving communion. He whispered to me, ‘We should give them Ranger Rosaries.’ I pulled two rosaries from my bag and Michael presented them to the midshipmen after Mass. The mids were very impressed by Michael and also thankful for the rosaries. God’s love was shown – which happened to be the message of the homily that mass – to always love one another.” The good Lord has given us his own Mother to be our mother also. She brings us comfort and protection. Mary wants us all to know her son and trust in Him for our future and that of our country. Jesus will give us the peace of mind we seek. Join the volunteers every Wednesday at SJN 9-12. Stay for the 12:10 Mass, Novena and rosary, if possible. Contact 410-990-4714, [email protected], www.rangerrosaary.org. St. Mary’s Parish Annapolis, Maryland CATHOLICS IN THE COLONIAL ERA As we celebrate Independence Day, take a moment to reflect on what it was like to be a Catholic living in Maryland in the colonial area. Thanks to those who came before, today we celebrate our freedom to worship freely. Religious intolerance made their faith stronger Although colonial-era anti-Catholic laws were neither consistently nor universally enforced, they were a source of considerable inconvenience and resentment among Catholics. As one scholar succinctly described it, the religious intolerance they suffered “tended to deepen the spiritual note among Maryland Catholics making their religion more dear to them.”65 With the high value placed on their religious belief, by the time of the War for Independence began, the Catholics of Maryland comprised a socially prominent gentry with pockets of faithful African-American slaves and a larger, diverse community of European-origin believers, all of whose descendants would make up the Catholic congregation in Annapolis in the next century. 65 Elizabeth S. Kite, “Catholic Carrolls on the Potomac,” 1-2, Kite Papers, Manuscript Division, Library of Congress. The leadership of the Carroll family In the early days of the Republic, Annapolis was a focal point for Father John Carroll. He worked with his distant cousin, Charles Carroll of Carrollton, lobbying the General Assembly to repeal any old colonial-era anti-Catholic laws that remained on the books. Many had been swept away in the days before the Revolution, when Charles Carroll was emerging as a new political force, but some remained and needed to be removed. Then in 1784, Pope Pius VI appointed Father Carroll superior of the missions of the thirteen United States, with the authority to administer confirmation and, in 1785, he was given the title of prefect apostolic. His selection as the first Catholic bishop of the United States followed in 1789. These positions gave him further reason to visit Annapolis and to write to state officials there on matters of interest to the Church. The role of Catholic women Historical research on the role of Catholic women in colonial-era Maryland indicates that the wives and daughters of the Catholic gentry played a significant role in maintaining the faith. It was often they who maintained the chapel, prepared communion bread, cleaned and repaired liturgical vestments, and generally oversaw preparations for Mass and the rites of passage: baptism, matrimony, and funerals. Parents were also exhorted by the Jesuits to engage in frequent family prayer, reading religious books, and instructing their children in the faith.56 56 Beatriz Betancourt Hardy, “Women and the Catholic Church in Maryland, 1689–1776,” Maryland Historical Magazine, 94, no. 4, Winter 1999 All quotes are from “Saint Mary’s Church in Annapolis, Maryland: A Sesquicentennial History 1853-20” by Robert Worden July 3, 2016 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARROQUIA DE SANTA MARÍA 109 Duke of Gloucester Street, Annapolis, Md. 21401.
