St. Mary’s Parish
Annapolis, Maryland
Dear Parishioners,
Worried about the little country church's tough financial straits, its
pastor asked the parishioners to dig deep into their pockets. "Dig deep," he
said over and over as the collection plate was passed down the pews. "Dig
deep!" At the end of the service, a young boy tugged on the pastor's robe.
"Did you get the money you needed for the church?" The reverend shook his
head sadly. "I'm afraid we didn't dig deep enough today, young man." "I
know just how you feel, Father. I've been in the back yard digging to China
all summer, and I’m still not there either."
It is that time of the year, summertime, when we begin investing your generous contributions to the “pink
envelope” week after week. We will invest the funds of our Restoration and Maintenance collection into to various
projects in and around our parish and schools. I would like to share with you now some of these projects that your
generosity made possible. Before I do, however, I want to thank you so much for “digging deep” and making this
possible. We try to be good stewards of the funds you share so generously with your parish. I would also like to
thank Don Jackson and Chuck Schmidt who head up our facilities office, and of course to Robert Rowan and our
parish facilities committee. The list of projects each summer begins in the fall in September and goes to June when
school is out. The list is gone over and discussed monthly, along with the numbers of the cost for each and their need
and importance. I think we care well for the many buildings and property that make up St. Mary’s and St. John
Neumann. I will share some of the projects that will be worked on during these summer months and we will share
pictures with you to see their progress as we go forward. Some will be very visible and easy to see, and others will be
relatively unseen but required and necessary nonetheless. Once again, thank you for making this possible!

Accepting the Christian message
Jesus said to the disciples, “Whenever you enter a town
and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and
say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet,
we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the
kingdom of God has come near.’ ” (Luke 10:10-11)
Adult: Where do you see the message of Christian faith
being rejected in the world today? What is your response
to that?
Child: What can you do when you are generous with
others, and they do not want what you give them?

Ranger Rosary
This story was shared by the family who coordinates the
rosary distribution at the West Point Military Academy
baccalaureate Mass. “While visiting my grandchildren in
Annapolis last weekend, we attended mass at Saint John
Neumann. My seven year old grandson, Michael, noticed
two midshipmen coming back from receiving
communion. He whispered to me, ‘We should give them
Ranger Rosaries.’ I pulled two rosaries from my bag and
Michael presented them to the midshipmen after Mass.
The mids were very impressed by Michael and also
thankful for the rosaries. God’s love was shown – which
happened to be the message of the homily that mass –
to always love one another.”
The good Lord has given us his own Mother to be our
mother also. She brings us comfort and protection. Mary
wants us all to know her son and trust in Him for our
future and that of our country. Jesus will give us the
peace of mind we seek.
Join the volunteers every Wednesday at SJN 9-12. Stay
for the 12:10 Mass, Novena and rosary, if possible.

DID YOU KNOW… On July
4th, 1775, from his headquarters
in Cambridge, MA, Commander
Washington’s General Orders to
his Troops of the United
Provinces of North America,
addressed among other things the importance of
enforcing prohibitions on cursing, swearing, and
drunkeness, and forbidding anyone from fresh-water
pond fishing or swimming “as there might be danger of
introducing the small pox into the army. ” Additionally,
General Washington required “a punctual attendance on
divine Service to implore the blessings of heaven upon
the means used for our safety and defense.”

Recycled School Supplies Needed for
Appalachian Children
"The need goes on, the need goes on" is the annual
appeal that makes its way to our parish every year at this
time. Our ecumenical friends in Appalachia have let us
know that their school children and teachers need
supplies for this coming fall. Again, our list notes writing
supplies, paper of all types, folders, rulers, scissors, book
bags of all types, teaching supplies, crayons and paints,
glue- you name it. They need what it takes to get the job
done for folks without an income, or teachers who often
buy supplies out of their paychecks. We are helping our
friends in Virginia, West Virginia, and western Maryland,
plus the needy in between. Yes, we are making a
difference, and their gratitude spurs us on.
All donations may be dropped off during the Ranger
Rosary workshops on Wednesday, July 20 and 27 from
9:00 am to noon in Seelos Hall, St. John Neumann. Extra

He will discuss how religious restrictions adversely impact
life and livelihoods in every region of the globe. Religionrelated hostilities spurred on by government restrictions
on religious freedom disrupt markets. He will talk about
how businesses are uniquely situated to solve problems
caused by religious restrictions and hostilities since they
are at the crossroads of culture, commerce and creativity.
They have a vested interest because religious freedom is

CATHOLICS IN THE COLONIAL ERA
As we celebrate Independence Day, take a moment to reflect on what
it was like to be a Catholic living in Maryland in the colonial area.
Thanks to those who came before, today we celebrate our freedom to
worship freely.
Religious intolerance made their faith stronger
Although colonial-era anti-Catholic laws were neither consistently nor universally enforced, they were a source of considerable
inconvenience and resentment among Catholics. As one scholar succinctly described it, the religious intolerance they suffered
“tended to deepen the spiritual note among Maryland Catholics making their religion more dear to them.”65 With the high value
placed on their religious belief, by the time of the War for Independence began, the Catholics of Maryland comprised a socially
prominent gentry with pockets of faithful African-American slaves and a larger, diverse community of European-origin believers,
all of whose descendants would make up the Catholic congregation in Annapolis in the next century.
65
Elizabeth S. Kite, “Catholic Carrolls on the Potomac,” 1-2, Kite Papers, Manuscript Division, Library of Congress.
The leadership of the Carroll family
In the early days of the Republic, Annapolis was a focal point for Father
John Carroll. He worked with his distant cousin, Charles Carroll of
Carrollton, lobbying the General Assembly to repeal any old colonial-era
anti-Catholic laws that remained on the books. Many had been swept away
in the days before the Revolution, when Charles Carroll was emerging as a
new political force, but some remained and needed to be removed. Then in
1784, Pope Pius VI appointed Father Carroll superior of the missions of
the thirteen United States, with the authority to administer confirmation
and, in 1785, he was given the title of prefect apostolic. His selection as
the first Catholic bishop of the United States followed in 1789. These
positions gave him further reason to visit Annapolis and to write to state
officials there on matters of interest to the Church.
The role of Catholic women
Historical research on the role of Catholic women in colonial-era Maryland indicates
that the wives and daughters of the Catholic gentry played a significant role in
maintaining the faith. It was often they who maintained the chapel, prepared communion
bread, cleaned and repaired liturgical vestments, and generally oversaw preparations for
Mass and the rites of passage: baptism, matrimony, and funerals. Parents were also
exhorted by the Jesuits to engage in frequent family prayer, reading religious books, and
instructing their children in the faith.56

Raphael and Milagros Elguera,
acción de Gracias
St. Mary’s Parish
Annapolis, Maryland
Estimados parroquianos,

vuestro amparo, implorando vuestra
protección y reclamando vuestro Auxilio.
A vos también acudo Madre, Virgen de
las virgenes y gimiendo bajo el peso de
mis pecados, me atrevo a comparecer

desechéis mis súplicas, oh Madre del
Verbo Divino, antes bien oídlas
