SETTING ASIDE THE WEAPONS OF WAR
Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The
answer follows: because they are used to violate God’s reign of peace, along with the warrior’s bow. In the
days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used only for war-making. They were the
aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a
military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without
horses, chariots, and bows would have set his listeners topsy-turvy.
This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In
a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and
homes where we are often at “war” over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what
degree we are willing to be like that “king” whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find
rest for our weary souls.

DEPONGAMOS LAS ARMAS DE LA GUERRA
¿Por qué, le preguntamos al profeta Zacarías hoy, quiere Dios destruir los carros y los caballos? La
respuesta es: porque, junto al arco de los guerreros, se les usa para violar la paz del reino de Dios. En los
días de Zacarías, carros y caballos eran bienes muy apreciados que se usaban sólo para hacer guerra. Eran
los portaaviones y los misiles nucleares de hoy día. Y en esa cultura que consideraba que un rey era un jefe
militar primero que todo, un rey montado en un pobre asno para proclamar la paz, sin caballos ni carros ni
arcos, hubiera causado gran revuelo entre su audiencia.
Esa profecía del humilde rey de la paz, montado en un asno, nosotros creemos que se cumplió en Jesús,
manso y humilde de corazón. En un mundo sacudido por la lucha militar, que frecuentemente es el
resultado de divergentes creencias religiosas, y hasta nuestras propias vidas y hogares donde vamos a la
guerra por la más mínima cosa, sería bueno que nos detuviéramos a pensar hasta que punto estamos
dispuestos a ser como el “rey” que con su mansedumbre y humildad es el camino para que nosotros
logremos encontrar descanso para nuestras almas.

Chúng ta có thể hỏi tiên tri Zêchariah hôm nay rằng: Tại sao Thiên Chúa lại muốn huỷ hoại những cỗ
xe và ngựa? Câu trả lời như sau: vì chúng đã được xử dụng để vi phạm sự cai quản trong hoà bình của
Thiên Chúa, kể cả những cung tên của binh sĩ. Trong thời của Zechariah, xe và ngựa là những vật có giá
mắc và chỉ dùng cho việc chiến tranh. Chúng chính là những hàng không mẫu hạm và hoả tiễn nguyên tử
của hôm nay. Và theo văn hoá thời của ngài, thường nghĩ tới vì vua như là một lãnh đạo quân đội trước
nhất và trên hết, nhà vua khiêm tốn cưỡi trên lưng con thú vật chở đầy vật dụng để nói lên sự hoà bình,
không có ngựa, xe, cung tên, đã làm cho người nghe tin bị hoang mang.
Người khiêm tốn này, vị vua hoà bình cưỡi trên lưng con thú vật, chúng ta tin đã làm trọn vẹn về Chúa
Giêsu, hiền lành và khiêm nhường trong lòng. Trong một thế giới điêu tàn vì xung đột binh bị thường tạo
nên bởi quan điểm khác biệt tôn giáo, và ngay cả trong cuộc sống của chính chúng ta cũng như trong gia
đình, chúng ta cũng thường sống trong chiến tranh bởi những chuyện rất nhỏ mọn, chúng ta muốn nên tốt
để ngưng, và suy nghĩ lại ở mức độ nào chúng ta muốn nên giống như vị vua đó mà đường hướng dịu dàng
và khiêm nhường là phương thế cho chúng ta tìm nơi an nghỉ cho linh hồn mệt mỏi của chúng ta.

Unaccompanied Children Crossing the Border
in Record Numbers
(Continues) OVERVIEW
Since 2011, the United States has seen an
unprecedented increase in the number of
unaccompanied migrating children arriving to the
country, predominately at the U.S./Mexico border.
Whereas the number of children apprehended
averaged 6,800 between federal fiscal years (FY)
(October 1-September 30) 2004 and 2011, the total
jumped to over 13,000 children in FY20122 and
over 24,000 children in FY 2013.3 HHS/ ORR, as
well as the Department of Homeland Security
(DHS) estimate that more than 60,000
unaccompanied
minors could enter the United States during 2014.
Why are so many children making the dangerous
journey north? Are there recent developments in
these countries that have led to the spike in child
migration over previous years? The delegation
attempted to find answers to these questions during
their mission. In short, there are no simple answers.
The delegation found that a series of interrelated
factors have contributed to this dramatic increase in
migration and that a “perfect storm” of a number of
these root causes has coalesced to create this
phenomenon. Push factors include the absence of
economic opportunity, the lack of quality education
and access to education generally and the resulting
inability for individuals to financially support
themselves and their families in their home
countries/local communities. The desire to reunify
with family in the United States, in part driven by
these forces, also has contributed to this increase in
migration. While these factors were omnipresent,
the delegation found that one overriding factor has
played a decisive and forceful role in recent years:
generalized violence at the state and local levels and
a corresponding breakdown of the rule of law have
threatened citizen security and created a culture of
fear and hopelessness.

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
If you have a heart for compassionate listening and the ability to give
2 hrs per week to patients in need of
spiritual care while in the hospital,
Valley Medical Center could really
use your help. We are looking for
mature men and women who are in
good standing and able to provide
emotional and spiritual support to
people from a variety of faiths and
backgrounds. Volunteers receive
hospital orientation and 5 weeks of
spiritual care training before beginning their spiritual practice. All of
our volunteers are supervised by
qualified experienced chaplains.
Volunteer assignments are determined by a mutual discernment
process. Classes meet Wednesdays
from 4:30-6:30 pm at the hospital

HƢỚNG DẪN CHẦU THÁNH THỂ CÁ NHÂN
(Theo Kinh Nguyện Kitô Hữu)
Khi đến với Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể, bạn cần phải đem hết lòng
hết sức vào cuộc gặp gỡ sống động và thân tình với Chúa Phục
Sinh này, Đấng yêu mến bạn vô cùng và luôn mong chờ bạn.
Hãy gặp bằng tấm lòng, hãy nói bằng trái tim, vì Chúa Giêsu
Thánh Thể là Thánh Tâm đang mở rộng, để không ngừng tuôn
trào tình yêu cho bạn: yêu đến nỗi chết vì yêu, không thể yêu
hơn được nữa... Khi chầu Thánh Thể, Chúng ta :
1- Ăn năn hối cải: cần có một tâm hồn trong sạch và thanh
thoát để được tự do đến với Chúa và nên một với Chúa. Hãy hết
lòng hối cải mọi tội lỗi.
2- Xua trừ và dứt khoát từ bỏ mọi thứ tà thần để trọn vẹn thuộc
về Chúa, trở nên đền thờ Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi.
3- Sống trong Thánh Thần hay suy niệm và nguyện gẫm về
Thiên Chúa Ba Ngôi: tập trung hoàn toàn để sống với Chúa Ba
Ngôi.
4- Kết hợp và chìm sâu trong Chúa: nhắm mắt, bịt tai, không
nói, không nghĩ, để tâm trí hoàn toàn trống không để chìm sâu
trong Chúa. (từ 3-5 phút)
5- Đọc một bài Tin Mừng (hai lần) Đọc bài suy niệm về bài
Tin Mừng đó. Xin Chúa Thánh Thần dẫn vào cảm nghiệm Lời
Chúa.
6- Kết hợp và chìm sâu trong Chúa (làm như phần 4-)
7- Lần hạt Mân Côi hoặc đọc chuỗi kinh Kinh Lòng Thương
Xót Chúa.
8- Sống trong Thánh Thần (như phần 3-)
9- Cầu chúc ơn Thánh Thần cho mọi người như lúc cám ơn
rước lễ.
10- Kết thúc: Chúc tụng Cha, ngợi khen Cha, cảm tạ Cha, và
yêu mến Cha hết lòng vì đã ban Con Một. Nhờ Người mà
chúng con được đến với Cha, sống cho Cha và thuộc về Cha.
Xin cho chúng con năng đến với Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể để
khám phá và đón nhận tình thương của Cha. Xin được cùng với
Chúa Giêsu chìm sâu mãi trong Thánh Thần Tình Yêu của
Cha... Xin Cha tha thứ lỗi lầm thiếu sót trong giờ chầu vừa qua
và cho chúng con luôn làm đẹp lòng Cha mọi nơi mọi lúc.
Chúng con cầu xin nhờ Đức Kitô, Chúa chúng con. Amen.

Cuando uno se imagina a un rey que viaja para visitar a su pueblo
nunca nos lo imaginamos montado en un burro. Si el Llanero Solitario tenía a Silver y Roy Rogers tenía a Trigger, un caballo blanco
de paso fino sería lo más apropiado para un rey y no un burro, aunque éste fuese de purasangre. Pero esta imagen del profeta Zacarías
debió haberse clavado en la imaginación de Jesús, pues así fue como hizo su entrada triunfal en Jerusalén donde lo recibieron como
el Mesías. No fue la entrada de un guerrero poderoso, sino la de un
rey amable, cuya ley traería la paz a las naciones.
Algunas veces me lamento de que se haya quitado a san Cristóbal
del santoral católico. Ese santo legendario, cuyo nombre significa
“el que lleva a Cristo consigo”, decía que el Señor resucitado había
querido que sus discípulos lo llevaran consigo. Lo llevamos en
nuestro cuerpo, en nuestra mente y en nuestro corazón. Lo llevamos al mundo cuando trabajamos por la paz y la reconciliación, y
para que llegue a conocer al Padre.
Esto necesita nuestra voluntad de cargar el yugo de Jesús. Recuerdo haber escuchado una vez que los yugos que Jesús hizo en la
carpintería bajo el asesoramiento de José eran fáciles de colocar
sobre el cuello de los animales, para distribuir equitativamente el
peso que arrastraban. El yugo que nos ofrece Jesús es su enseñanza
acerca del reino de los cielos y cómo vivir en ese reino mientras
estamos en el mundo. Eso significa revestirnos de la actitud de
Jesús y de su espíritu de escucha atenta para conocer la voluntad
del Padre. Eso es aprender dentro de la misma familia.

When you think of a king coming before his people, the
image of someone riding on a donkey does not come to
mind. If the Lone Ranger had Silver and Roy Rogers had
Trigger, a similar white stallion would seem most fitting for
a king. Not an ass, even a purebred one. But this image from
the prophet Zechariah is one that must have planted itself in
the imagination of Jesus, for that is how he made his great
entrance into Jerusalem and was greeted as the Messiah. It
was not the entrance of a powerful warrior, but of a gentle
king whose rule would bring peace to the nations.
I have sometimes regretted the loss of St. Christopher from
the calendar of saints. That legendary saint, whose name
means “Christ-bearer,” signaled that the risen Lord had now
chosen to be carried by his disciples. We bear him in our
bodies, minds, and hearts. We bring him to the world when
we work to bring peace and healing and knowledge of the
Father.
This necessitates being willing to take on the yoke of Jesus.
I remember once hearing that the yokes Jesus made in the
carpenter shop under Joseph’s guidance rode easily on the
shoulders of the animals, distributing evenly the weight they
pulled. The yoke Jesus offers us is his teaching about the
kingdom of heaven and how to live in it while in the world.
This means putting on his attitude and spirit of attentive
listening for the will of the Father—home schooling in the
best sense.

Khi bạn nghĩ tới vì vua đang đến trước thần dân, hình ảnh một
người cưỡi trên lưng con lừa không thể đến trong trí ta. Nếu
nhân vật trong phim, The Lone Ranger có ngựa bạc và Roy
Roger có súng, thì tương tự như vậy một con ngựa tơ trắng có lẽ
mới xứng hợp cho một vì vua. Không có lừa, ngay cả một con
nguyên ròng. Nhưng hình ảnh này từ tiên tri Zêchariah là tư
tưởng phải được nảy sinh từ óc tưởng tượng của Chúa Giêsu, bởi
đó là cách Chúa Giêsu đã uy nghi tiến vào thành Giêrusalem như
thế nào và đã được đón rước như một Ngôn Sứ. Đó không phải
là cuộc tiến vào thành của chiến binh dũng mãnh, nhưng là của
vì vua nhân từ, mà luật lệ của người sẽ mang lại hoà bình cho
quốc gia.
Đôi khi tôi cảm thấy hối hận vì tên của thánh Christopher không
thấy trong lịch các thánh. Vị thánh "thần tiên" đó, có cái tên
mang ý nghĩa "người mang lấy Đức Kitô" (Christ-bearer), tỏ dấu
rằng Chúa Phục Sinh giờ đây đã chọn để các môn đệ mang theo.
Chúng ta mang lấy người trong thân thể chúng ta, trong trí và
trong tâm hồn. Chúng ta mang người vào thế giới khi làm việc
để đem bình an và chữa lành và để hiểu biết về Chúa Cha.
Điều bắt buộc là chúng ta phải ước ao mang lấy ách của Chúa
Giêsu. Tôi nhớ một lần nghe kể rằng cái ách Chúa Giêsu làm
trong xưởng mộc dưới sự chỉ bảo của thánh Giuse đã đeo dễ
dàng trên vai các con vật, chuyền ra đồng đều sức nặng chúng
phải kéo. Cái ách mà Chúa Giêsu trao cho chúng ta trong lời dạy
bảo của ngài về nước trời, và làm sao để sống trong đó khi còn ở
dưới thế. Việc này có nghĩa là mặc lấy cung cách và tinh thần
của ngài qua việc chú ý lắng nghe thánh ý của Chúa Cha- ngay
tại trường học gia đình.
