PETER AND PAUL
Today is something of a rarity: the celebration of a saint’s day that replaces the Sunday liturgy. Only a handful of
these days, given the official rank of ―solemnity,‖ are considered so foundational and primal to the mission of the
Church that they can interrupt the Sunday sequence. And so it is with Peter and Paul today.
In a way, they each have personality traits with which we can identify. They are both impetuous, sometimes acting
or speaking thoughtlessly, contradicting the spiritual gifts given to them by God. At such times, they might receive a
nudge from God, much the same as many of us experience. On the positive side, these men were deeply rooted in their
faith in Christ, tireless and fearless in living out their call to spread the Good News of his death and resurrection.
Perhaps we might identify more with one or the other, but the essential truth we celebrate today is this: Through the
Spirit, Christ built and continues to build the Church and make the kingdom known through fragile, remarkable human
beings, each graced in a particular way for the work of the reign of God.

Hoy es una rareza: la celebración del día de un
santo que reemplaza la liturgia del domingo. Sólo un
puñado de días como éste, con rango oficial de
―solemnidad‖, son considerados tan fundamentales y
primarios en la misión de la Iglesia que pueden
interrumpir la secuencia de los domingos. Tal es el caso de
san Pedro y san Pablo hoy día.
De cierta manera, cada uno tiene rasgos de
personalidad con los que nos podemos identificar: ambos
son impetuosos, a veces actuando y hablando sin pensar,
contradiciendo los dones espirituales que Dios les había
dado. En esos casos, tal vez reciben un empujoncito de
Dios, como los que muchos de nosotros hemos sentido. En
lo positivo, la fe de estos hombres estuvo profundamente
fundamentada en Cristo, incansables y valientes cuando
vivían su llamado de anunciar la Buena Noticia de su
muerte y resurrección. Quizás nos identificamos más con
uno que otro, pero la verdad esencial que celebramos hoy
es esta: por el Espíritu, Cristo edificó y continúa
edificando la Iglesia y da a conocer el Reino por medio de
frágiles y notables seres humanos, cada uno con una gracia
particular para la obra del Reino de Dios.

THÁNH PHÊRÔ VÀ PHAOLÔ
Ngày lễ hôm nay là điều hiếm có ít xảy ra : ngày cử hành lễ các vị thánh mà được thay thế cho phụng vụ ngày
Chúa Nhật. Chỉ có một số lễ như vậy, đã được cho lên hàng "lễ trọng", và được coi là nền tảng và trọng yếu đối với
sứ mạng của Giao Hội nên đã có thể xen vào thứ tự phụng vụ của ngày Chúa Nhật. Và đó là trường hợp của Thánh
Phêrô và Phaolô hôm nay.
Về một phương diện, mỗi vị thánh đều có tình tình cương trực mà từ đó chúng ta có thể nhận ra các ngài. Cả hai
ngài cùng nóng nảy, đôi khi cò hành động hoặc nói năng thiếu suy nghĩ, đối nghịch với tinh thần mà Chúa đã ban
cho các ngài. Trong những lúc ấy, các ngài có thể bị Chúa "huých" (đánh bằng cùi chỏ) cho, giống như rất nhiều
người chúng ta đã có kinh nghiệm. Về phương diện tích cực, các ngài đã được ăn rễ sâu trong đức tin nơi Đức Kitô,
không mệt mỏi và sợ hãi sống ơn gọi của các ngài để loan truyền Tin Mừng về sự chết và sống lại của Chúa. Có lẽ
chúng ta còn nhận ra một hay nhiều điều nữa về hai thánh, nhưng sự thật chủ yếu chúng ta mừng kính hôm nay là :
Qua Thần Khí, Đức Kitô xây dựng, và vẫn tiếp tục xây dựng Giáo Hội và làm cho vương quyền rộng lan qua những
yếu đuối mỏng dòn, phi thường của loài người, mỗi ân sủng trong một trường hợp đặc biệt đối với chương trình
thống trị của Thiên Chúa.

Unaccompanied Children Crossing the
Border in Record Numbers

From November 16-23, 2013, a delegation from
Migration and Refugee Services of the U.S.
Conference of Catholic Bishops (MRS/USCCB)
traveled to southern Mexico and Central
America to examine and understand the flight of
unaccompanied migrating children and youth
from the region. Bishop Mark Seitz, bishop of
El Paso, Texas, led the delegation, and was
accompanied by Jeanne Atkinson, Executive
Director of the Catholic Legal Immigration
Network, Inc. (CLINIC), Reverend Daniel
Groody, Professor of Theology, University of
Notre Dame, and consultant to the USCCB
Committee on Migration; Jane Bloom, Director,
Washington Office of the International Catholic
Migration Commission (ICMC); Kristyn Peck,
Associate Director of Children’s Services, MRS/
USCCB; Ashley Feasley, Immigration Policy
Advisor, MRS/ USCCB; and Kevin Appleby,
Director of Migration Policy and Public Affairs,
MRS/USCCB.
Currently, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras,
and Mexico have the highest numbers of
unaccompanied youth arriving at the U.S./
Mexico border where they are apprehended by
federal immigration enforcement due to their
lack of immigration status and placed into the
custody and care of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services’ Office of
Refugee Resettlement (HHS/ORR). According
to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP),
in fiscal year 2012, 24,120 out of a total of
24,481 unaccompanied children apprehended at
the U.S./Mexico border or in the interior were
from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and
Honduras.

"Trong một thời điểm lịch sử qua đó gia đình là đối tượng bị
nhiều thế lực tìm cách phá hủy, hoặc làm cho bị biến dạng,
Giáo Hội ý thức rằng thiện ích của xã hội và của chính Giáo hội
gắn liền chặt chẽ với thiện ích của gia đình, Giáo Hội cảm thấy
sứ mạng của mình một cách mạnh mẽ và sinh động phải loan
báo cho tất cả mọi người ý định của Thiên Chúa về hôn nhân
gia đình‖ . . .
"Tôi muốn nhờ Mẹ Maria, bầy tỏ lòng biết ơn hôm nay của tôi
về hồng ân đau khổ. Tôi hiểu rằng đó là một ơn cần thiết. Tôi
hiểu rằng mình phải dẫn đưa Giáo Hội của Chúa Kitô vào Ngàn

Như vậy có nghĩa là Giáo Hoàng cũng bị tấn công, phải chịu
đau khổ, để mỗi gia đình và thế giới thấy rằng, có một Tin
Mừng cao cả hơn: tin mừng về sự đau khổ, và với tin mừng này
ta phải chuẩn bị tương lai: ngàn năm thứ ba của gia đình, của
mỗi gia đình và của tất cả các gia đình" . . .

La fuerza laboral estadounidense trabaja más horas hoy en día y su
producción es más rápida que nunca antes. Algunos dicen que el
incentivo más fuerte es el peligro de perder el trabajo o los beneficios si no se produce adecuadamente. Otros acreditan el aumento de
productividad a las atractivas recompensas monetarias integradas al
sistema empresarial. De cualquier manera, la mayoría de los analistas están de acuerdo en que esa tendencia no es buena. En toda categoría de ingresos hay personas que están sacrificando demasiado el
tiempo con su familia a fin de darle más tiempo al trabajo.
Esta semana las tres lecturas bíblicas ejemplifican el sistema de
recompensa que Dios ofrece a aquellas personas que hacen sacrificios meritorios. A diferencia de los sacrificios debido al exceso de
trabajo, estos sacrificios traen recompensas eternas. La historia de
Eliseo y la mujer servicial ejemplifica las recompensas por la generosidad. Ella no actúa por interés propio, sino por respeto al siervo
de Dios, el profeta Eliseo. La generosidad de la mujer es recompensada con una vida nueva en su vientre, un hijo que cuide de ella al
llegar a su ancianidad. Pablo nos dice que todos los que hemos
muerto al pecado viviremos con Cristo en ―una vida nueva‖ (Romanos 6:4). Por último Jesús dice que ―el que pierda [la
vida] por mí, la conservará . . . y quien dé un vaso de agua fresca a
uno de estos pequeños, no se quedará sin recompensa‖ (Mateo
10:39, 42). El sacrificio es central para el discipulado cristiano y así
también lo es la resurrección del Señor.

The American labor force is working longer hours and
producing faster than ever before. Some say that the
strongest incentives are threats of job or benefit loss if
production is not adequate. Others credit increased productivity to the attractive monetary rewards built into the corporate system. Either way, most analysts agree that it is
not a positive trend. People of every income bracket are
sacrificing too much of their leisure and family time to
make more room for work in their lives.
This week all three scripture readings illustrate the reward
system that God offers for those who make worthy sacrifices. Unlike the sacrifices of overwork, these sacrifices
bring eternal rewards. The story of Elisha and the helpful
woman exemplifies the rewards of generosity. She acts not
out of self-interest, but out of respect for God’s servant,
the prophet Elisha. Her generosity is rewarded with new
life in her womb, a son to care for her in her old age. Paul
tells us that all who die to sin shall live with Christ ―in
newness of life‖ (Romans 6:4). Finally, Jesus says that
―whoever loses his life for my sake will find it . . . and
whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these
little ones‖ will be rewarded (Matthew 10:39, 42). Sacrifice is at the heart of Christian discipleship, but then, so is
the Resurrection.

Mãnh lực của lao động Hoa Kỳ là làm việc dài giờ và sản
xuất nhanh hơn bao giờ hết. Có người nói rằng sự kích thích
mạnh nhất là sự đe doạ bị mất việc hay mất quyền lợi nếu sản
xuất không tương xứng. Những mối lợi khác giúp gia tăng
sản xuất do số tiền thưởng hấp dẫn thiết lập sẵn trong hệ
thống quản trị. Bất cứ đường lối nào, hầu hết các phân tích
đồng ý rằng đó không phải là đường hướng tích cực. Nhân
viên thuộc bất cứ mức lợi tức nào đều hy sinh quá nhiều thời
giờ rảnh và thời giờ của gia đình để làm việc trong đời sống
của họ.
Cả ba bài đọc thánh kinh trong tuần này, mô tả phần thưởng
mà Thiên Chúa ban cho những ai đã hy sinh xứng đáng.
Không như sự hy sinh làm việc quá đáng, những hy sinh này
đem lại ân thưởng vĩnh cửu. Câu chuyện Tiên tri Elisha và
người đàn bà đã nêu lên phần thưởng của lòng quảng đại. Bà
hành động không bởi sở thích riêng nhưng bởi sự kính trọng
Elisha, người tôi tớ của Thiên Chúa. Sự rộng rãi của bà đã
được đền trả với mầm sống mới trong dạ bà, một người con
trai để chăm sóc bà lúc tuổi già. Thánh Phaolô nói với chúng
ta rằng tất cả những ai chết đi cho tội lỗi, sẽ được "sống cuộc
sống mới" với Đức Kitô. Sau cùng, Chúa Giêsu nói rằng "Bất
cứ ai mất sự sống vì ta sẽ tìm được sự sống... và bất cứ ai chỉ
cho một ly nước lạnh cho một trong những kẻ bé mọn này" sẽ
được phần thưởng. Hy sinh phải là trọng tâm của các môn đệ
Kitô hữu, nhưng rồi sự sống lại cũng vậy.
