It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life,
however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been
reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer
takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This
discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his
cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the
kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine
desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet.
No es accidente que las palabras “discípulo” y “disciplina” sean casi idénticas. Su relación en la fe y la vida cristianas, sin
embargo, ha caído en desuso en la generación pasada debido a que ciertas reglas y regulaciones prescritas en la fe cristiana se
han reducido o relajado. Estas reglas con frecuencia eran llamadas “disciplinas”. Nos equivocamos, sin embargo, si pensamos
que ya no se necesita disciplina para seguir a Cristo. La Carta a los Hebreos nos lo asegura hoy. Nuestra disciplina es como la
de un atleta que persigue una victoria o quiere ser el mejor, o como la de un músico que lucha por hacer carrera como concertista o por perfección en la ejecución de una nueva obra musical. Esta disciplina se basa en el deseo, no en las reglas. Fue el
deseo de hacer la voluntad de Dios lo que motivó a Jesús en el camino hacia el calvario. Es ese mismo deseo el que él inspira en
nosotros hoy: luchar por entrar por la puerta angosta, para encontrarnos en el Reino con muchas personas que están allí no
solamente por observar las reglas, sino por un sincero deseo de reclinarse a la mesa del celestial banquete.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Corner ᴥ
Esquina del Jubileo de la Misericordia
This Jubilee Year of Mercy and Pope Francis’ ministry have renewed our understanding that the Church’s heart is open wide to all, and the
heart of the gospel is God’s mercy. Flooded with God’s mercy, our hearts should overflow as channels bringing to wounded and weary hearts
Jesus’ healing mercy. For Jesus warns, our own salvation is not guaranteed by the Liturgy of the Word (“you taught in our streets”) nor by the
Eucharist (“we ate and drank in your company”) (Luke 13:26). People far from that banquet, “from the east and the west and from the north and
the south . . . will recline at table in the kingdom of God” (13:29). Rather, showing mercy is key to obtaining mercy ourselves (Matthew 5:7). So
we should never dare ask what “someone” asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” (Luke 13:23). The crucial question is “Will I be
saved?” And Jesus’ answer is another question: “Have you shown mercy to everyone, freely, gladly, no limits, no conditions, no exceptions?”
Este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia y el ministerio del Papa Francisco vienen renovando nuestro entendimiento de que el corazón de la Iglesia
está abierto para todas las personas y, el corazón del Evangelio es la misericordia de Dios. Inundados con la misericordia de Dios, nuestros corazones deben desbordarse como arroyos llevando a las personas cansadas y heridas la misericordia consoladora de Jesús. Ya que Jesús señala que
nuestra salvación no está garantizada por la Liturgia de la Palabra (“tú has enseñado en nuestras plazas”) ni por la Eucaristía (“Hemos comido y
bebido contigo”) (Lucas 13:26). Habrá personas lejos de ese banquete “del oriente y del poniente, del norte y
del sur . . . participarán en el banquete del Reino de Dios” (13:29). Por el contrario, mostrar misericordia es
la clave para obtener misericordia nosotros mismos (Mateo 5:7). Para que nunca debamos atrevernos a preguntar lo que “alguien” le preguntó a Jesús: “Señor, ¿es verdad que son pocos los que se salvan?” (Lucas
13:23). La pregunta debiera ser: “¿Yo me salvaré?” Y la respuesta de Jesús sería otra pregunta: “¿Has sido
misericordioso con tu prójimo, de manera libre, con alegría, sin límites, sin condiciones, sin excepciones?”

Adult Faith Formation Classes will be starting Aug. 16th at 7pm
Children’s Faith Formation Classes:
Spanish Courses start September 10th, at 9:00am and 10:30am
English Courses start September 12th, at 3:30pm and 5:00pm
Youth Faith Formation (Junior High Teens) start September 12th at 6:00pm
There will no longer be any Sunday Classes. Confirmation Faith Formation will be during the week.
First Year Confirmation Students start September 12th at 6:00pm
Second Year Confirmation Students Start September 13th at 6:00pm

renting a space to sell items for this year’s Niles Flea
Market. Applications are available in the vestibule and
at the side entrance of the church. Spaces are
guaranteed on a first come first paid basis. Spaces are
