Novena Prayer
Dear Friends,
As we enter into summer many aspects of parish
life seem to slow down a bit. This weekend I would like to
menon one parcular group of volunteers that never
seems to slow down. Members of the St. Leo Conference
of the St. Vincent de Paul Society respond to our brothers
and sisters experiencing hardship throughout the year with
prayer and direct acon.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is more than just a
charity. Inspired by Gospel values, SVPD leads men and
women to join together to grow spiritually by showing love
of neighbor. They do this by offering person to person
service and support to those who are needy and suffering,
regardless of their race, creed, color or status.
This past year their volunteers have touched the
lives of more than 6,000 people in their outreach. Through
their assistance line, food pantry, home visits and
community outreach they have provided financial
assistance in the amount of $41,955, and over $275,300 in
donated non-cash assistance. They assisted nearly 520
adults and 410 children for Easter, Thanksgiving and
Christmas. Over $35,900 worth of food and $65,200 worth
of gis and non-cash assistance was provided to the needy
during these three holidays. Members of the St. Leo
Conference of SVPD have responded to a wide range of
requests, counseling and referrals. This past year the
volunteers have spent over 16,000 hours and travelled
over 11,900 miles to serve those in need.
I pray that none of us forgets that the work of
Christ in which we share connues all year round. To learn
more about the work of SVDP, to volunteer, or to support
the worthwhile group in other ways please leave a
message for Tammy or Greg on the Saint Vincent DePaul
general number at 703-352-3509.

Our Bishops have called upon all of us to
rededicate ourselves to the cause of religious freedom. The
Church in the United States will join together in a special
way from June 21- July 4 in prayer for the protecon of
religious freedom and conscience rights in the face of so
many assaults on the dignity of the human person. At St.
Leo the Great we will pray together the following Novena
Prayer at each Mass:
Almighty God, Father of all naons,
for Freedom You have set us free in Christ Jesus.
We praise and bless You for the gi of religious liberty,
the foundaon of human rights,
jusce, and the common good.
Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect
and promote our liberes.
By Your grace may we have the courage
to defend them for ourselves
and for all who live in this blessed land.
We ask this through the intercession of
Mary Immaculate, our patroness,
and in the name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
with Whom You live and reign,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.
