ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com Dear Friends, Our parish celebrates with great joy this weekend and next First Holy Communion. This is a most suitable me for all of us to reflect again on the great goodness of God manifested in the gi of the Eucharist. The following is taken from Norms for the Distribuon and Recepon of Holy Communion under Both Kinds in the Dioceses of the United States of America As Catholics, we fully parcipate in the celebraon of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, parcipants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligaon to make an act of perfect contrion, including the intenon of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent recepon of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. The Lord himself gave us the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The eucharisc sacrifice "is wholly directed toward the inmate union of the faithful with Christ through communion." It is Christ himself who is received in Holy Communion, who said to his disciples, "Take and eat, this is my body." Giving thanks, he then took the chalice and said: "Take and drink, this is the cup of my blood. Do this in remembrance of me" (Mt 26:26-27; 1 Cor 11:25).... Christ is "truly, really, and substanally contained" in Holy Communion. His presence is not momentary nor simply signified, but wholly and permanently real under each of the consecrated species of bread and wine. The Council of Trent teaches that "the true body and blood of our Lord, together with his soul and divinity, exist under the species of bread and wine. His body exists under the species of bread and his blood under the species of wine, according to the import of his words." May 5, 2013 The Church also teaches and believes that "immediately aer the consecraon the true body of our Lord and his true blood exist along with his soul and divinity under the form of bread and wine. The body is present under the form of bread and the blood under the form of wine, by virtue of the words [of Christ]. The same body, however, is under the form of wine and the blood under the form of bread, and the soul under either form, by virtue of the natural link and concomitance by which the parts of Christ the Lord, who has now risen from the dead and will die no more, are mutually united." Since, however, by reason of the sign value, sharing in both eucharisc species reflects more fully the sacred realies that the Liturgy signifies, the Church in her wisdom has made provisions in recent years so that more frequent eucharisc parcipaon from both the sacred host and the chalice of salvaon might be made possible for the laity in the Lan Church. Christ's presence in the Eucharist challenges human understanding, logic, and ulmately reason. His presence cannot be known by the senses, but only through faith—a faith that is connually deepened through that communion which takes place between the Lord and his faithful in the very act of the celebraon of the Eucharist. Thus the Fathers frequently warned the faithful that by relying solely on their senses they would see only bread and wine. Rather, they exhorted the members of the Church to recall the word of Christ by whose power the bread and wine have been transformed into his own Body and Blood. The teaching of St. Cyril of Jerusalem assists the Church even today in understanding this great mystery: “We have been instructed in these ma2ers and filled with an unshakable faith that what seems to be bread is not bread, though it tastes like it, but the Body of Christ, and that what seems to be wine is not wine, though it tastes like it, but the Blood of Christ” In Christ, Rev. David A.
