ST. LEO THE GREAT CHURCH FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA www.stleofairfax.com February 24, 2013 Parish Lenten Penance Service and Individual Confessions Dear Friends, Caught up in the wonderful vision of Christ’s glory, St. Peter cries out: “Master, it is good that we are here!” In doing so, St. Peter not only acknowledges the unspeakable joy he finds in Christ’s presence, but his desire to remain on that mountain with Him forever. St. Peter will in fact remain with the Lord, but the experience of that “presence” will not be what he expected and will at )mes be more than he can bear. St. Peter does not understand that the “Transfigura)on” was God’s gi, to him and the other apostles to strengthen and encourage them as they journeyed with the Lord to Jerusalem for the last )me. The final victory of the Lord and the perfect manifesta)on of His glory in the Resurrec)on will be revealed only in His obedient and loving acceptance of His Passion and Death. St. Peter will have to be with the Lord at those moments too in order to defini)vely share in His glory. This is true as well for us. There will be a Lenten Penance Service Sunday, March 17th at 7:30 pm in the Church. Visiting priests will join our parish priests to hear individual Confessions. Please plan to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to participate in the sacrament before Easter. St. Leo the Great Annual Parish Lenten Mission "Hungers of the Human Heart" presented by Father John Conley, C.P. St. Paul, in today’s second reading, reminds us that our “ci)zenship is in heaven”, and that He “will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body.” We journey together, you and me with the Lord and He with us, to our own Jerusalem or place of acceptance. Along the way there will be flashes of the Lord’s goodness and power. We are strengthened, as were the apostles, by these moments. But we know that they are nothing compared to the final glory to be revealed to and through us. “Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and my crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord.” Sunday, March 10th through Wednesday, March 13th 7:30 pm ++++ Next Sunday we will celebrate the first of the three Scru)nies for those who are preparing for the Easter Sacraments of Ini)a)on. Lent is, for those preparing to be received into the church as well for all of us, a period of purifica)on and enlightenment. We join together in prayerful support of our brothers and sisters as they con)nue their journey of faith. We express to them our gra)tude – their eagerness to receive the Lord helps us to rediscover the beauty and power of what perhaps has been taken for granted by us. In Christ, Rev. David A. Whitestone, Pastor Wednesday Sunday VISION: From Wounds to Wonder~ Seeing as God Sees Monday PASSION: From Magic to Mystery~ Cultivating Spiritual Growth Tuesday FORGIVENESS: From Hurt to Harmony~ A Nightmare in My Closet HOPE: From Grumbling to Gratitude~ To Expect the Unexpected Mass will be offered at 7:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings prior to the Mission. Father Conley, a Passionist priest, was ordained in 1976. He has served as vocations director, campus minister, retreat director, and pastor. Having preached both missions and retreats throughout the United States and Canada, he now resides in Chicago. LENT HAS BEGUN Throughout Lent, Saint Leo Parish will offer an extra Mass at 7:00pm each week night. We will also have Eucharistic Adoration between the 6:15 and 9am Masses each weekday. Beginning Feb. 15th, on Fridays instead of the Holy Hour, we will have Stations of the Cross at 7:30pm. Beginning Feb. 20th, on Wednesdays we will have Confessions beginning at 6:30 pm and Holy Hour from 7:30-8:30pm. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. Every Friday in Lent is a day of Abstinence. Fast means 1 main meal per day and 2 smaller, meatless meals for all between the ages of 18 and 59 (inclusive.) Abstinence means no meat or meat products are to be eaten. This is applicable to all who are 14 years or older. These are minimum standards for the observance of the Lenten penitential period of preparation and no Catholic may lightly excuse him/herself from them.
