SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FEBRUARY 15, 2015
Dear people of St. Mary’s:
Grace and peace to you! I hope and pray that you are well. Lent begins this Week! This year the theme chosen for
the Lenten season is: “Make your hearts firm” (James 5:8) “Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for
each communities and every believer. Above all it is a ‘time of grace’ (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything
that he himself has not first given us. ‘We love because he first has loved us’ (1 Jn 4:19). He is not aloof from us.
Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn
away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us.
Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we
are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure… Our heart grows cold. As
long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don’t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of
indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is
a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront. [selections from Pope Francis’ Lenten Message 2015]
Pope Francis has given a short prayer for us to use during Lent. It comes from the Litany of the Sacred Heart
of Jesus: “Make our hearts like yours” or “(Make my heart like yours)”
Annual Catholic Appeal
Today we begin the Annual Catholic Appeal “Called to be Merciful.” Our ACA assessment for 2015 is 22,000. I
am confident we can reach that goal. As we are “Called to be Merciful” we encounter God’s love when we express
mercy and compassion, through stewardship, service, and sacrifice. Our participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal
is our response to the call of discipleship. Your gifts make possible the work that affects so many in our diocese:
service to the poor, education for those that attend Catholic schools and catechesis, formation of new priests, and
the presence of Christ for those imprisoned, marriage preparation, evangelization, youth/young adult ministry, etc.
Each family will have the option of receiving the “Called to be Merciful.” brochure, pledge response card, and
envelope. We will fill out this response card together or go online to www.diocese-sdiego.org | We may also return
the pledge response card to the parish office either by hand. Our goal is: $22,000. We usually make our goal. Thank
you for your generosity in making that happen.
What did Pope Francis Really Say? (Religion, Expression, and Violence part 1 of 2)
In reflecting on the violence that happened in France on religion, expression, and violence Pope Francis said this:
“Thank you for the question, which is an intelligent one. I believe that freedom of religion and freedom of speech
are both fundamental human rights…Let’s be frank. There is a truth that we cannot overlook, namely, that
everyone has the right to practice his or her religion freely, without offending others. That is what we do, what we
all want to do. Second, we cannot offend others, make war or kill in the name of one’s own religion, that is, in
God’s name. What is happening now makes us a little… it astounds us. But we always think of our history: how
many wars of religion have we had! You may think of the Saint Bartholomew’s day massacre… How do we make
sense of this? We too have sinned in this regard. But we cannot kill in God’s name. This is an aberration. To kill in
the name of God is an aberration. I believe that this is the most important thing about religious freedom: to exercise
it in freedom, without offending, but also without imposing it or killing for it.” (Pope Francis, Flight to the

Queridos feligreses de Santa María:
¡Gracia y paz a Uds.! Espero que estén bien. ¡La cuaresma empieza esta semana! El lema de esta cuaresma es:
“Fortalezcan sus corazones” (St 5,8) “La Cuaresma es un tiempo de renovación para la Iglesia, para las
comunidades y para cada creyente. Pero sobre todo es un «tiempo de gracia» (2 Co 6,2). Dios no nos pide nada que
no nos haya dado antes: «Nosotros amemos a Dios porque él nos amó primero» (1 Jn 4,19). Él no es indiferente a
nosotros. Está interesado en cada uno de nosotros, nos conoce por nuestro nombre, nos cuida y nos busca cuando
lo dejamos. Cada uno de nosotros le interesa; su amor le impide ser indiferente a lo que nos sucede. Pero ocurre que
cuando estamos bien y nos sentimos a gusto, nos olvidamos de los demás (algo que Dios Padre no hace jamás), no
nos interesan sus problemas, ni sus sufrimientos, ni las injusticias que padecen… Entonces nuestro corazón cae en
la indiferencia: yo estoy relativamente bien y a gusto, y me olvido de quienes no están bien. Esta actitud egoísta, de
indiferencia, ha alcanzado hoy una dimensión mundial, hasta tal punto que podemos hablar de una globalización de
la indiferencia. Se trata de un malestar que tenemos que afrontar como cristianos. [palabras del Mensaje Cuaresmal

Nuestro Santo Padre el Papa Francisco nos ha dado una jaculatoria para esta cuaresma, la cual viene de la
letanía del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús: “Haz nuestro corazón semejante al tuyo” o “Haz mi corazón semejante
al tuyo.”
Llamado Católico Anual
Empezamos ahora la colecta anual de la Diócesis/"Llamado Católico Anual." El lema de este año es: “Llamados a
Ser Misericordiosos”. Como somos “Llamados a Ser Misericordiosos” nos encontramos con el amor de Dios
cuando expresamos misericordia y compasión, a través de la corresponsabilidad, servicio y sacrificio. Nuestra
participación en el Llamado Católico Anual es nuestra respuesta al llamado de ser discípulos. Sus dones hacen
posible el trabajo que impacta a muchos en nuestra diócesis: la atención a los pobres, la educación de niños en
escuelas Católicas y catequesis, la formación de candidatos al sacerdocio y la presencia de Cristo para los
encarcelados, preparación matrimonial, evangelización, ministerio con jóvenes/ jóvenes adultos, etc. Cada familia
tendrá la opción de recibir el panfleto, la tarjeta de promesa y el sobre de “Llamados a Ser Misericordiosos”.

También puede regresar su tarjeta de promesa a la oficina en persona. Nuestra meta es: $22,000. Normalmente

su ayuda, estoy seguro que podremos alcanzar esa meta.
¿Qué dijo realmente el Papa Francisco? (Religión, Libertad de expresión y Violencia: Parte 1 de 2)
Reflexionando sobre el tema de la violencia ocurrida en Francia sobre Religión, Expresión ? Y violencia el Papa
Francisco dijo:Gracias por la pregunta; es inteligente. Creo que los dos son derechos humanos fundamentales: la
libertad religiosa y la libertad de expresión. No se puede… pensemos… Usted es francés, vayamos a París.
Hablemos claro. No se puede ocultar una verdad: que toda persona tiene derecho a practicar su religión, sin
ofender, libremente. Así lo hacemos, así lo queremos hacer todos. En segundo lugar, no se puede ofender, declarar
la guerra, matar en nombre de la religión, es decir, en nombre de Dios. A nosotros, lo que sucede ahora nos resulta
un poco… nos sorprende. Pero pensemos también en nuestra historia, en las numerosas guerras de religión que
hemos tenido. Piense en la “noche de San Bartolomé”… ¿Cómo se entiende eso? También nosotros hemos
cometido el mismo pecado. Pero no se puede matar en nombre de Dios. Es una aberración. Matar en nombre de
Dios es una aberración. Creo que esto es lo principal sobre la libertad de religión: se debe practicar con libertad, sin

Grandparent Program. As a volunteer, you will
