Last week I mentioned the cardinal human virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance) which are
named so because they hold the moral life of the person. Now, I would like to briefly discuss the theological virtues. Whenever we talk about theological virtues, some people think that it is something reserved for priests,
deacons or nuns.
We are not born with virtues because if that were the case they would not be considered virtues. But in the heart of every person there is a
willingness and ability that helps us acquire the virtues when the person has the means necessary. Virtue is a habitual disposition of man,
acquired by repeated exercise and consciousness to act freely in order to obtain perfection or goodness. To be a true virtue it has to be habitual, not sporadic or isolated acts. We have to practice them often. Therefore the opposite of virtue is vice.
The theological virtues are faith, hope and charity. These were infused by God in our soul the day of our baptism, but as a seed that has to
grow with our effort, prayer and sacrifice. God our Lord gave us these virtues so that we are able to act as his children and to counter our
inclination toward selfishness, comfort or pleasure. These virtues require our free collaboration and conscious self to improve and grow.
THE VIRTUE OF FAITH. It is a gift, a divine light by which we are able to acknowledge God, watch his doings as they happen and see
things as he sees them.
THE VIRTUE OF HOPE. It is the theological virtue by which we desire God as the supreme good and trust firmly to attain eternal happiness and means to do so. This virtue helps me live this hope confident because I believe in Christ who is omnipotent and loving God who
can not fail to his promises.
THE VIRTUE OF CHARITY. It should be emphasized that faith and hope are meaningless if they fail to reach supernatural love or Christian charity. By faith we have the knowledge of God, by hope trust the fulfillment of the promises of Christ and by charity we act according to the teachings of the Gospel.
I hope that each of us create awareness of the importance of asking for and implement these virtues so that our families at Corpus Christi
grow in love of God and allows us to build community.
La semana pasada les mencioné las virtudes humanas cardinales (Prudencia, Justicia, Fortaleza y Templanza) las cuales se llaman así porque sostienen la vida moral de la persona. Ahora, quisiera hablar brevemente de las virtudes teologales. Pero siempre que hablamos de
virtudes teologales, algunas personas piensan que se trata de algo reservado para los curas, los diáconos o las monjas.
Nosotros no nacemos con las virtudes porque si así fuera ya no serían virtudes. Pero, en el corazón de toda persona tiene una disposición y la
capacidad para la virtud que les ayuda a adquirir las virtudes cuando se ponen los medios necesarios para eso. La Virtud es una disposición habitual del hombre, adquirida por el ejercicio repetido de actuar consciente y libremente en orden a la perfección o al bien. La virtud para que sea virtud tiene que ser habitual, y no un acto esporádico o aislado. Es decir tenemos que practicarlas frecuentemente. Por
tanto, lo contrario a la virtud es el vicio
Las virtudes teologales son la fe , la esperanza y la caridad. Estas fueron infundidas por Dios en nuestra alma el día de nuestro bautismo,
pero como una semilla, que tenía que crecer con nuestro esfuerzo, oración y sacrificio. Dios nuestro Señor nos dio estas virtudes para que
seamos capaces de actuar como sus hijos y así contrarrestar nuestra inclinación hacia el egoísmo, la comodidad o el placer. Estas virtudes
requieren nuestra colaboración libre y consciente para que se perfeccionen y crezcan.
LA VIRTUD DE LA FE. Es un don, una luz divina por la cual somos capaces de reconocer a Dios, ver su mano en cuanto nos sucede y ver las
cosas como Él las ve.
LA VIRTUD DE LA ESPERANZA. Es la virtud teologal por la cual deseamos a Dios como Bien Supremo y confiamos firmemente alcanzar
la felicidad eterna y los medios para ello. Esta virtud me ayuda a vivir confiado en esta esperanza porque creo en Cristo que es Dios omnipotente y bondadoso y no puede fallar a sus promesas.
LA VIRTUD DE LA CARIDAD. Es necesario recalcar que la fe y la esperanza no tienen ningún sentido si no llegan al amor sobrenatural o
caridad cristiana. Por la fe tenemos el conocimiento de Dios, por la esperanza confiamos en el cumplimiento de las promesas de Cristo y por
la caridad obramos de acuerdo a las enseñanzas del Evangelio.
Ojala que cada uno de nosotros tome conciencia de la importancia de pedir y poner en práctica estas virtudes para que nuestras familias
de Corpus Christi crezcamos en amor a Dios que nos permite construir la comunidad.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Corner ᴥ
Esquina del Jubileo de la Misericordia
Amos castigates religious people who, “comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6).
In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor
ordered him removed. That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for
him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life,
right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have
time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?
Amos castiga a personas religiosas “confiadas” (6:1, 5) que ignoran la caída de la cultura, de la nación, de la religión (6:6). En la
parábola de Jesús esa confianza es la perdición del hombre rico. Él no lastima o perjudica a Lázaro, tampoco le niega las sobras ni
pide que lo quiten de la entrada de su casa. Y ese es el punto principal que Jesús menciona. El hombre rico no hizo ningún mal a
Lázaro, pero tampoco hizo algo bueno por Lázaro. Solo después de la muerte, separados por “un abismo inmenso” (Lucas 16:26), pudo
el hombre rico ver a Lázaro, a quien no se atrevió a verlo mientras vivió, justo ante sus ojos. Así como los cinco hermanos que quedaban en la casa del hombre rico (16:27–28), nosotros los que vivimos en la Iglesia todavía tenemos tiempo
para ver a ese alguien, a Jesús que está a la entrada de nuestra puerta y que es tiempo para hacer algo.
¿Quién, practica, concreta y específicamente es Lázaro en mi vida? ¿Qué puedo hacer por ese Jesús de carne
y hueso durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia?
