Near Westside Community on the Move to Host “Neighborhood Network Night”

For the past several years, a group
of residents and stakeholders known as
the Near Westside Community on the
Move has been meeting regularly to find
new ways to improve the neighborhood
through projects, programs, and events.
Now, Community on the Move is looking
to shake things up, change their format,
and engage new residents. On June 22nd
from 5pm to 6:30pm at Skiddy Park, they
will host a “Neighborhood Network
Night” focused on two main goals:
creating opportunities for residents to
be engaged in their neighborhood, and
creating a time/space for neighbors to
build networks of support for one another.
On Monday, June 22nd the event will
first focus on the theme of “taking back
our streets” based on conversations
that the Near Westside Initiative and
the Lerner Center for Public Health
Promotion have had with over 100
residents asking people what barriers
there are to living a healthy lifestyle
in the community.
Out of those
conversations a report was developed
that shares your concerns regarding
neighborhood safety, lighting, and
access to community resources. On the
22nd residents will be encouraged to
give feedback and brainstorm potential
projects and programs that could solve
some of these concerns.
The second part of the meeting will
be all about networking. Recognizing
that we are all busy, and that it is tough

to get out and meet your neighbors, this
will be a time for people to share their
interests and needs, and them to make
peer connections in relation to those
interests. A great example of this would
be if you had a baby and you were in
need of baby clothes, you could express
that need. Someone else in the group
might then say that they have older kids
and no longer need baby clothes, and
they would be happy to donate them
to you. Through these connections,
relationships and ultimately friendships
are built, leading to a more vibrant and
exciting community.
To get the conversations going, the event
will have plenty of food and refreshments
provided by the Lerner Center, as well
as a tent, chairs, and tables to create a
comfortable environment, rain or shine.

tiempo para desarrollar lazos de amistad
para apoyarse el uno al otro.
El evento, el 22 de Junio, se enfocará en el
tema de “reconquistando nuestras calles”.

A través de estas conexiones, relaciones,
desarrollaremos nuevas amistades, las cuales
nos ayudarán a construir una comunidad mas
vibrante y emocionante.
Con el objetivo de animarnos a conversar,
el evento tendrá suficiente comida y refrescos
que serán provistos por el Lerner Center, así
como un toldo, sillas, y mesas para crear un
ambiente cómodo, ya sea que llueva o salga el

Un padre es...
A father is...
Since my column was about Mother’s
Day last month, it seems only fitting
to dedicate this month’s to fathers for
Father’s Day which is June 21st. I have an
amazing father who can be seen working
like a horse around my yard or shoveling
my driveway; he even helped to replant
the Veterans’ Memorial in Skiddy Park
last summer. He is very supportive of me
and my initiatives, and when I ask him for
help, he is always there. Additionally, he is
a wonderful Grandfather to my sons. He is
very patient and kind.
When I was young, I recall that my father
worked a lot to support our large family and
when he wasn’t working, it seemed that he
was always occupied with fixing something
or disciplining one of us kids. I am the oldest
child with three younger brothers and I
think my father engaged with my brothers
more than me, like fixing cars and building
rockets. Despite that, I always remember his
support and encouragement to be the best I
can be, especially as an athlete.
I see similar traits in my husband as a
father. He works many jobs to support our
family, often preoccupied with something
he is working on, and takes on the
discipline role, teaching our son how to be
a good boy. Our son definitely gets excited
about dad time, doing ‘dad’ things like
working with tools or playing sports like
basketball and baseball. I often see him
copying the actions of his father, trying to
be like dad.
Over the last few weeks, I took time
to consider what
the qualities of a
father are. Sure,
they are different
for every father
but, upon asking
our corner //
a few neighbors
about their dads,
similarities became clear. Dads are often
the providers of the family. They also
are the protector and rescuer. They are
competitive, playful and often the teaser.
General descriptions of fathers can
mean different things from one family to
the next. One father I met in Skiddy Park,
Patty from Kenya, described his extended
family in Kenya where the older children
were responsible for teaching the younger
children right from wrong and being each
other’s playmate. Patty is now living here
in America with his daughter, who does not
have any siblings, so it is Patty’s role to teach
her right and wrong and be her playmate.
I would like to understand more about
the father figure on the Near Westside. On
June 20th and 21st, I will be spending some
time at Skiddy Park to ask visitors about
positive qualities of their fathers and the
role that fathers play in their lives. These
qualities will then be displayed in the
park in a way to honor our fathers. If you

This week marks the end of my time
interning with the Near Westside Initiative. It has been a valuable semester learning and growing, and I would like to take
this opportunity to offer my reflections.
My work with the Near Westside Initiative this semester has been fairly programmatic. I have learned a lot about the
neighborhood’s makeup and history. I
have learned the street names and what
schools and businesses are in the Near
Westside; I have learned about the organizations and programs in the neighborhood and have helped with some initiatives that the NWSI is a part of. But buildings and streets are not what ultimately
make a neighborhood. A neighborhood,
most truly, is its people.
As I reflect on the Near Westside and think
about what I have learned during my time
here, I come back to the idea of “neighborhood.” “Neighborhood” is a noun like
“brotherhood” or “sisterhood;” it is the iden-

tity we have as a whole made up of its parts.
A brotherhood is one unit and one identity
made up of and shared by the brothers who
are part of it. In the same way a neighborhood is one unit and one identity made up of
and shared by the neighbors who are part of
it. But the word is also a noun like “parenthood;” it is a role and a title conferred on
those who do a particular thing. Parenthood
is the act or role of being a parent. Neighborhood is the act of being a neighbor.
This community is full of exciting
opportunities, but more than that, it is
full of invested individuals. I have been
impressed by the people who identify
with the Near Westside neighborhood
not only because they live or work within its geographical bounds, but because
they have taken on the role of neighboring in this place. Some grew up here and
this has always been their home and
some have moved to the neighborhood
and made it their home. Either way these
people have chosen this place to love and
to invest themselves in. I have encoun-
tered so many people who are passionate
about what is happening in this place.
And they are not all passionate in the
same direction—they clash! They disagree and argue about what their goals
are within the neighborhood or what
methods are best for achieving a certain
outcome. And it is fantastic! These disagreements show a passion for this place
and an investment of themselves in the
endeavor of neighboring.
So thank you. Thank you for the chance
to spend a short time being among you and
learning from you. Thank you for your
passions and for choosing to invest yourselves here on the Near Westside. I am
encouraged that this is not a place where
individuals must buy into a particular
mindset or fit a particular mold in order to
have buy-in. This is a place made up of real
people with honest opinions. Thank you
for taking on the role of neighboring and
for working to shape the identity of this
place shared by so many.

Y and J went from being friends to outright enemies in a matter of weeks.
Their arguments built until they were pulling
hair, trailing each other home, hitting and
spitting on the playground at their school.
Other kids egged them on, instigating the
fights and telling them that if they didn’t fight,
they weren’t standing up for themselves. After
a particularly bad fight, both girls were asked
not to return to school and the police were
contacted.
This is where the Near Westside Peacemaking
Center stepped in. We brought together the
two girls and their adults into a peacemaking
circle and explained that there was a better
way. We invited three community member
peacemakers, people who know what it’s like
to grow-up in a rough neighborhood where
not standing up for yourself is seen as weak.
And that’s what Y and J needed. They
needed adults who took them seriously.
They needed community members who said,
“We can help.” They needed the grown-ups
around them to say, “We hear you.” And
so they apologized. And their adults cried
and hugged. And then the girls smiled and
hugged. They agreed to stop the fighting.
Y and J were allowed back to school. The
police investigation would go no further.

Taking Back the Streets
A report on neighborhood residents’ and colleagues’ feedback from meetings
organized by the Lerner Center during April to May 2015

First of all, THANK YOU! Our most
sincere gratitude to all of you in the
community that shared viewpoints and
dreams with us. We value deeply the
time, effort, ideas, dreams, and concerns
that you shared with us during the first
series of community meetings organized
during February to May 2015. Nighty
eight community members, of all ages
(children to adults), participated in this
process of community collaboration. We
do not expect these meetings to be the last
meetings to invite you to, and we hope to
participate in other community meetings
that partners or community members
organize in the future.
The purpose of the meetings was
to listen. As The Lerner Center dives
deeper into relationships with residents
and providers in the neighborhood,
we are careful to listen to the “voice”
of those who live or work in the Near
Westside. Through these informal
meetings, the Lerner Center wanted
to open a meaningful conversation
to find out about the main concerns,
and dreams, of those leaving and/or
working in the neighborhood. To do so,
we invited community members through
partnering agencies to meet for an hour,
and in a safe space share their opinions
regarding health, and other issues in the
neighborhood. We also requested one-onone meetings with colleagues, directors
and staff of organizations working in
the Near Westside, to inquire about their
services, ideas, and commitment to work
in the neighborhood. A total of 9 meetings
with residents, and 18 colleague meetings
were organized, with a total participation
of nighty eight community residents
(40 children between 6-12 years old), 21
teenagers, and 37 adults) and more than
18 colleagues.
Why engage the community? We believe
that the most appropriate answers to some
of the issues in the neighborhood can
be provided by the residents themselves.
Poverty, violence, and other situations
won’t be overcome without engaging the
community in active problem solving.
What did we find out? After listening
to both community members, and
colleagues, we identified common themes.
These are topics that were consistently
brought up by the participants during
the meetings, and that were clearly
identified as meaningful. We found
the most important identified themes
for the participants were Neighborhood
safety, Community Engagement, and
Community Building.
Neighborhood
Safety:
For
those either working or living in the
neighborhood, continued drug activity,
and the resulting violence, are real
barriers to use of neighborhood
resources, especially Skiddy Park. There
is a desire for more police presence
though there is limited ability for
community policing due to shrinking
City Police numbers.
Community Engagement: There is a
desire among residents and colleagues to
develop more trust between community
members and organizations working in
the neighborhood. To invite residents
to participate in the development, and
organization of activities that would
have a positive impact in the community.
As one colleague stated, we have to
cultivate “power with not power over”
residents and participants, and engage
them in meaningful collaboration.
WHAT RESIDENTS
ARE SAYING
After listening to both community
members, and colleagues, we identified
common themes. These are topics that
were consistently brought up by the
participants during the meetings, and that
were clearly identified as meaningful.
Neighborhood Safety:
• Continued drug activity and the resulting
violence are real barriers to use of
neighborhood resources like Skiddy Park.
• There is a desire for more police
presence though there is limited ability for
community policing
Community Engagement:
• Desire among residents and colleagues
to develop more trust between
community members and organizations
working in the neighborhood.
• Work to cultivate “power with not power
over” residents and participants, and
engage them in meaningful collaboration.
Building Community:
• Need for more positive activities in the
neighborhood; with events and group
activities such as picnics and festivals.
• Need to build “community” among
providers. Need for better interorganizational communication, to prevent
duplication of efforts and to also help
promote activities of partner organizations.
Building
Community:
Each
conversation with residents and
colleagues highlighted the need for more
positive activities in the neighborhood;
there is a groundswell of support to take
back the streets with positive events
and group activities (picnics, festivals).
There is also a need to build “community”
among providers. Colleagues noted the
need for better inter-organizational
communication, to prevent duplication of
efforts and to also help promote activities
of partner organizations.
What’s next? Most of you are surely
thinking about what are the next steps.
How and for what will this information
be used, and in what way will it shape
the future of the Near Westside.
Perhaps the biggest opportunity
is to match resources with concrete
identified needs that matter to the
residents in the neighborhood. The
understanding of the main issues that
have to be targeted to improve the
quality of life, and health of the Neat
Westside residents, offers providers in
the neighborhood the opportunity to
increase collaboration to realign or
find more resources to target these
issues.
The following short-term and
intermediate actions address the two
main overlapping themes of neighborhood
safety, and community engagement.
We will create a calendar of events for
the summer to send to all residents and
organizations; and we will arrange family
friendly exercise classes. In addition,
the Lerner Center, the NWSI, the City
of Syracuse Parks Department, and
the Police department are all working
together to increasing safety and activities
at Skiddy Park. This may include the
relocation of the Community Police
substation to the Skiddy Park Fieldhouse.
These are just the initial steps forward.
This is a timely effort. The input
of the residents and colleagues in the
community provides us with an
opportunity to work together to take
back the streets in the neighborhood, to
transform the Near Westside into a safer
community. Thank you all for your work

Reconquistando las Calles
Un breve reporte de conversaciones sostenidas con residentes del barrio y colegas en
reuniones organizadas por el Lerner Center durante los meses de Abril a Mayo 2015

Primero, ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS! Nuestra más
sincera gratitud para todos aquellos miembros
de la comunidad que compartieron sus puntos
de vista y sueños con nosotros. Valoramos
profundamente el tiempo, esfuerzo, ideas,
sueños, y preocupaciones que compartieron
con nosotros durante la primera serie de
reuniones comunitarias organizadas durante
los meses de febrero a mayo 2015. Noventa y
ocho miembros comunitarios de todas las edades
(niños y adultos), participaron en este proceso de
colaboración comunitaria. Estas sin duda alguna,
no serán las últimas reuniones comunitarias que
sostendremos, así como esperamos participar
en otras reuniones comunitarias que miembros
de la comunidad y/o organizaciones del barrio
organicen en el futuro.
El propósito de las reuniones fue
“escuchar”. A medida que el Lerner Center
se sumerge más profundamente en relaciones
con residentes y proveedores en el barrio,
queremos tener el cuidado de escuchar las
“voces” de aquellos que viven o trabajan en el
Near Westside. A través de estas reuniones,
el Lerner Center se propuso dar inicio a
conversaciones significativas para entender

Para ello, decidimos invitar a los miembros de
ésta comunidad, a través de organizaciones
amigas, a reuniones de aproximadamente
una hora para que en espacios seguros
compartieran sus puntos de vista en relación
a la salud y otros temas importantes de la
vida en el barrio. Adicionalmente, solicitamos
reuniones individuales con colegas (directores
y trabajadores de organizaciones trabajando
en el barrio), para conocer más acerca de
los servicios que proveen, sus ideas, y su
compromiso para mejorar el barrio. Un total
de 9 reuniones con residentes y 18 reuniones
con colegas fueron organizadas, con una
participación total de noventa y ocho residentes

Esta semana marca el fin de mi tiempo de
pasantía con la Iniciativa del Near Westside.
Ha sido un semestre valioso de aprendizaje y
crecimiento, y me gustaría aprovechar esta
oportunidad para ofrecer mis reflexiones.
Mi trabajo con la Iniciativa del Near Westside
este semestre ha sido bastante programática.
He aprendido mucho sobre los componentes
y la historia del barrio. He aprendido los
nombres de las calles y de las escuelas y las
empresas cuales están en el Near Westside;
he aprendido sobre las organizaciones y
programas en el barrio y he ayudado con
algunas iniciativas que son parte del NWSI.
Pero los edificios y las calles no son lo que
finalmente hacen un barrio. Un barrio, con

del barrio (40 niños entre las edades de 6-12
años, 21 adolescentes y 37 adultos) y más de 18
colegas.
¿Porque incluir a la comunidad? Nosotros
creemos que las respuestas más apropiadas a
muchos de los problemas en el barrio surgirán
de los residentes mismos. La pobreza, violencia,
y otras situaciones no serán superadas si la
comunidad no se involucra en un proceso activo
de resolución de éstos problemas.
¿Qué descubrimos? Después de escuchar a
líderes comunitarios, y colegas, nos dimos la
tarea a identificar temas en común. Temas
que fueron consistentemente mencionados
y discutidos por los participantes en
las reuniones, y que fueron claramente
identificados como prioridades. Esto fue lo
que encontramos:
Los temas más importantes identificados
por los participantes fueron seguridad en el
barrio, participación comunitaria, y desarrollo
comunitario.
Seguridad Comunitaria: Para aquellos que
trabajan o viven en el barrio, el tráfico y uso de
drogas, así como la violencia que de este resulta,
son barreras reales que impiden el uso de los
recursos existentes en el barrio, especialmente
el parque Skiddy. Los participantes expresaron
el deseo de más presencia policial, a sabiendas
de la existe limitada habilidad de la fuerza
policial producto de la reducción en el número
de policías en la ciudad.
Participación Comunitaria: Los residentes
y colegas en el barrio expresaron el interés en
común de desarrollar más confianza y estrechar
los lazos entre las organizaciones que trabajan
en el barrio y los residentes de la comunidad.
Esto implica el extender una invitación a más
residentes, e involucrarles en el desarrollo y
organización de actividades que resultarán en
un impacto positivo en la comunidad. Uno de
los colegas afirmó: debemos de cultivar a los
miembros de la comunidad, “empoderarlos,
no imponernos, e involucrarles en relaciones
significativas y saludables de colaboración”.
Desarrollo de Actividades comunitarias:
En cada una de las reuniones, con colegas y
residentes, fue sobresaltada la clara necesidad
de más actividades comunitarias positivas en
el barrio; Existe un amplio apoyo de la idea de
reconquistar las calles del barrio con eventos
positivos y actividades comunitarias (picnics,
festivales). También existe la necesidad de
“Construir Comunidad” entre los proveedores.
Nuestros colegas notaron la necesidad de más y
mejor comunicación entre las organizaciones,
para prevenir la duplicación de esfuerzos,
toda verdad, es su gente.
Al reflexionar sobre el Near Westside y
pienso en lo que he aprendido durante mi
tiempo aquí, vuelvo a la idea de “vecindario”
es un sustantivo como “hermandad”; es la
identidad que tiene en su conjunto formado
por las partes. Una hermandad es una unidad
y una identidad formada por y compartida
por los hermanos que forman parte de
ella. De la misma manera un vecindario
es una unidad y una identidad formada
por y compartida por los vecinos que son
parte de ella. Pero la palabra también es un
sustantivo, como “paternidad;” es un papel y
un título conferido a aquellos que hacen una
cosa en particular. La paternidad es el acto o
la función de ser un padre. Vecindario es del
acto de ser un vecino.
Esta comunidad está llena de oportunidades
interesantes, pero más que eso, está lleno
de individuos invertidos. He quedado
impresionada por las personas que se
identifican con el barrio del Near Westside
no sólo porque viven o trabajan dentro de sus
límites geográficos, sino porque han asumido
el papel de la vecina en este lugar. Algunos
crecieron aquí y esto siempre ha sido su
casa y algunos se han trasladado a la zona

After listening to both community
members, and colleagues, we identified
common themes. These are topics that
were consistently brought up by the
participants during the meetings, and that
were clearly identified as meaningful.
Neighborhood Safety:
• Continued drug activity and the resulting
violence are real barriers to use of
neighborhood resources like Skiddy Park.
• There is a desire for more police
presence though there is limited ability for
community policing
Community Engagement:
• Desire among residents and colleagues
to develop more trust between
community members and organizations
working in the neighborhood.
• Work to cultivate “power with not power
over” residents and participants, and
engage them in meaningful collaboration.
Building Community:
• Need for more positive activities in the
neighborhood; with events and group
activities such as picnics and festivals.
• Need to build “community” among
providers. Need for better interorganizational communication, to prevent
duplication of efforts and to also help
promote activities of partner organizations.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- In Carlos McArthur’s
family, the men went to prison. His dad and a
brother have done time.
But not McArthur: He’s starting a new trend.
He’s on track to graduate from Fowler High
School in June. McArthur, 17, has been
accepted at SUNY Cortland. He’s thinking
about becoming a police officer, he said.
McArthur was one of 200 Syracuse students
who graduated from Hillside’s WorkScholarship Connection program May 14. He
went from a kid who got in fights and had poor
grades to a kid who could juggle a job, school
work, sports and chorus.
McArthur and the others will graduate in
their regular school ceremonies next month.
The Syracuse City School District contracts
with Hillside Family of Agencies, a nonprofit,
to provide job training and counseling services
at the city schools to 1,000 kids who are at risk
of dropping out of school.
McArthur and the other Hillside graduates are
part of the Syracuse City School District’s effort
to change its own path, too: Roughly 17 percent of
students in the city school district drop out and
only 51 percent graduate in four years.
As a freshman, McArthur attended
Nottingham High School. His grades were
in the 70s and he was getting into trouble, he
said. He had gotten into a fight with some boys
outside of school, he said. Shortly after, they
threatened him and his family. McArthur got
caught carrying a knife.

a partner in the Hillside program.)
McArthur’s grades went from the 70s to an
86 with all Regents courses, he said. With
McGroarty’s help, McArthur prepped for the
SATs. McGroarty helped him apply for college
and financial aid. And she helped him figure
out where he could afford to go. He got into
more than one school, but ended up getting
the best financial aid package from Cortland,
where he plans to play football and study
foreign languages.
McGroarty said that when she met McArthur,
he was struggling to fit in at school. Since then,
he’s grown into a young man who knows where
he’s going in life, she said.
McArthur said he’s not worried that he’ll
struggle without an advocate to help him
navigate college. He said the skills he’s learned
will carry him through.
“I’m ready for college and whatever else life
has to bring me,” he said.

like to congratulate Greichalyz Rivera
for having been recognized by staff at
Fowler High School as a student with a
lot of determination - she never gives up.
Greichalyz is motivated by the strong
women who surround her including her
best friend, step-mom, grandma and
aunt. They remind her to stay strong
and they tell her that she’s “just got
to do it”. Greichalyz refers to herself
as an everything girl; participating
in everything from sports, acting and
dancing to ROTC.
Fowler staff find Greichalyz is always
eager to learn, practice and finish the
tasks of the day. Her teachers have
nothing but positive words to describe
Greichalyz.
“Greichalyz is a leader in the
classroom. She comes to school, ready
to learn and often encourages others
to do the same. Her education is very
important to her and it is evident in
every class she is in. Greichalyz goes
above and beyond to ensure her success.

Artist in residence Brendan Rose to install bus shelters

SALTQUARTERS COORDINATOR
Installation sculptor Brendan Rose has
spent his time at SALTQuarters working
toward a lasting project that will have an
impact on the neighborhood. “It's rare,”
Rose says “to get the opportunity to develop
location-based work over such a period of time
that the work can emerge organically.” With a
focus on spaces of respite during travel, Rose
envisioned a series of rests that would provide
neighborhood residents with an attractive
space to wait for the bus.
Working with a group of students at
Westside Academy at Blodgett, Rose began
the lengthy process of designing and creating
the bus stops earlier this year. The students
offered ideas, sketches, and opinions as he
produced different incarnations of the bus
stops that will be installed outside of St.
Lucy’s in June. The students were really
into the entire creative process, something
Rose found quite exciting. The end product
is two stops, one in front of the Westside
Learning Center and another in the lawn
outside of St. Lucy’s auditorium across the
street. Both installations have a natural,
floral inspiration. The stop outside of the
auditorium will be two flowers sprouting
from the ground, offering leaves as seats
for one with shade provided by overhanging
petals. For the installation outside of the
Learning Center, Rose and the students have
designed a large archway with 2-3 seats that
are shaded by a similar style leaf as the other
stops. Both of these stops will have some
kind of color applied, a decision Rose will
make in the coming weeks.
Expect a celebratory event sometimes in
late June!
