AND WHEREFORES
F
ive years ago, when HOP magazine first
got under way, our aim was to communicate and to infuse in others our
enthusiasm, which after thirty years in the
business is still the mainspring of our work.
We feel enthusiasm for our products, we are
driven by enthusiasm in our design work,
which puts concern for the horse at the centre,
and we respond with enthusiasm at the prospect of ensuring customer satisfaction.
We also wanted to get across something
about ourselves, namely the true measure of
the people that have a hand in establishing the
Prestige brand but who remain unknown to
the patrons of our products. It was, and still
is, a way of telling you about ourselves. But
things have moved on. Over time, and at your
suggestion, we have introduced additional
coverage that raises the profile of Italy and
its industriousness through insights into its
history, art, and culture. Books, newspapers,
and magazines have long been the royal road
to reach a wider public. We might accordingly
be justified in thinking that HOP gets leafed
through, secures a reading, and attracts consensus for its content. It might, on occasions,

even bring together all who share enthusiasm
for horse riding. Five years after the first issue
of HOP Prestige, the whys and the wherefores
which inspired that endeavour are no less
relevant. We flatter ourselves that the time
honoured habit of thumbing through a newspaper or a magazine is a rite that will endure
in an increasingly virtual and technological
world, a rite that all the friends of HOP will
continue to observe.

DE UN PORQUÉ
H
ace como cinco años, al comenzar esta
publicación, queríamos comunicar y
transmitir nuestra pasión; ahora, tras
más de 30 años de actividad, sigue siendo la
base de nuestras acciones.
Pasión por el producto, pasión en la programación poniendo en primer lugar el respeto del
caballo, pasión para lograr la satisfacción de
nuestros clientes.
Queríamos comunicar algo nuestro, es decir
todo el valor de las personas que trabajan para
que la marca Prestige se afirme, pero a las que
no se les conoce a través del producto.
Era y es una forma para hablar de nosotros,
pero no sólo, en cuanto con el tiempo, y con
vuestras sugerencias, hemos añadido secciones
con el objetivo de representar mejor la laboriosidad italiana a través de la historia, el arte y
la cultura.
Libros, diarios y revistas han sido en el transcurso del tiempo el instrumento divulgativo por
excelencia: es lícito pensar entonces que nuestra revista la hojeen, la lean y compartan, y tal
vez que pueda crear un momento de agregación
en todas las personas que se apasionan por la
equitación.

Después de cinco años del lanzamiento de
HOP Prestige, todas las motivaciones que fundamentan nuestro obrar son siempre actuales,
y nos gusta pensar que la antigua gestualidad
de hojear un diario o una revista sea un ritual
que resiste incluso en un mundo cada vez más
virtual y tecnológico, un ritual válido también
para todos los amigos de HOP.

S1, THE QUEEN
OF THE
CONVENTION
P
restige Italia held its annual convention between 10th and 13th
June last at Tanka Village, the resort in Villasimius, Sardinia.
The imposing complex - and the venue for our 2010 convention
- was chosen again this year for the outstanding level of its facilities.
We refer not just to the hotel accommodation.
Following an inaugural welcome on Friday afternoon when guests
gathered for cocktails, the key events of the convention took place the
following day, Saturday 11th. In the morning, in the resort’s convention hall, the new “queen” of the Prestige jumping saddle range, the
S1, was unveiled along with other novelties announced by our company for the second half of the year. There followed, in the afternoon,
a modest field trial of the S1 model.
Sunday was kept free of engagements - bar one, a leave-taking session. Following dinner in the evening the guests gathered to say their
goodbyes until the next convention.

junio se llevó a cabo en Cerdeña, en
las instalaciones del Tanka Village de
Villasimius, la convención anual de Prestige
Italia.
El prestigioso complejo, que ya había acogido la convención de 2010, fue elegido también
este año por el notable nivel de sus estructuras
no sólo hoteleras.
La convención, que comenzó el viernes en la
tarde, con un cóctel de bienvenida, tuvo sus
momentos apicales el día después, sábado 11:
en la mañana, en la sala de congresos del centro turístico, fue presentada a los participantes
la nueva reina de las sillas dedicadas al salto,
la S1, y las demás novedades que Prestige
anunciaba para la segunda parte del año; en
la tarde, se hacía probar prácticamente el modelo S1.
El domingo fue un día libre de compromisos
para todos. La única cita, en la noche, después
de la cena, para saludarse y prometer verse en
las próximas ediciones.

S1 - STORY OF A REVOLUTIONARY IDEA:
HOW IT GOT
STARTED
Two years on from the release of the D1 series, the Prestige dressage saddle developed
with technical support from Carsten Engelke,
with ever more riders and horses in favour of
a technique – unique at present – that gives
freedom of movement to horses’ shoulders,
a question was being asked with pressing
frequency. How might this freedom of the
shoulders be further improved, especially
when horses return to earth on completing
a jump? At that precise moment the impact
pressure through the saddle – let’s take the
case of a 1.3 metre vertical jump performed
by a 60-kg rider – corresponds to a weight
on the shoulder blade of between 270 and
450 kg per square centimetre. As a result, the
restricted freedom of movement due to the
saddle resting on the horse’s shoulders causes
severe wear. Signs of fatigue and overloading
are frequent, followed by inflammation, especially about the suspensory ligament and tendons. Plainly, solving this problem would also
mean a big improvement in the performance
turned out by the horse and its rider.

D1, la silla de Doma Clásica de Prestige realizada con la colaboración técnica de Carsten Engelke, y con el creciente
número de caballos y de jinetes satisfechos del
método hasta ahora único de mantener la libertad de los hombros del caballo en movimiento,
se hacía cada vez más urgente la cuestión de
cómo se pudiese mejorar la libertad de movimiento de los hombros del caballo, en particular en la fase de recepción después del salto.
En esta fase, por ejemplo, la presión de impacto
a través de la silla durante un salto vertical de
1.30 m con un jinete de 60 Kg corresponde a un

peso sobre el omoplato de entre 270 y 450 kg
por centímetro cuadrado, y, consecuentemente,
la limitada libertad de movimiento que produce
la silla apoyada en el hombro del caballo causa
un fuerte desgaste y frecuentes signos de cansancio; sobrecarga inflamando especialmente
la zona del suspensorio y de los demás tendones.
Es evidente que la solución de este problema
habría comportado una notable mejoría de las
prestaciones del binomio caballo-jinete.

THE FINISHED SADDLE
L
et’s now look at the features of this revolutionary saddle. To start with, the
S1 comes with a choice of gullet sizes
– S. M, and L. Likewise with seat sizes, which
range from 16”, through 17”, and up to 18”.
Flap projection sizes are normal, advanced +
2 cm, and advanced + 4 cm. The blocks provided are large size or, on request, medium.
Flap sizes start at S and go up through M,
L, and XL. The S1 saddle flaps are lined in
smooth or printed premium leather that combines the softness of calfskin and the resistance of leather, while its seat, kneepads, and
panels are in soft calfskin.
S1 is available in cognac, tobacco brown, and
black.

he revolutionary features of the S1
saddle are evident both in flat work and
during jumping and this emerges in
comparative tests that pit the S1 against the
best traditional saddles.

Jumping
As against traditional saddles, the S1 enables
the horse to move with far more freedom and
coordination and with a wider stride, notably when working on diagonal movement.
At the same time, with the S1 the horse has
greater twisting motion. Because the S1 is
a short saddle it allows greater freedom of
movement to horses, which increasingly are
shorter, stronger, and fast moving. This reason for this freedom is the ideal position of
the panels. Additionally, with horses that are
asymmetric about the shoulders the S1 creates no interference. Much the same story
applies to horses with well developed musculature. Their natural tendency to push the
saddle backwards ceases to be an issue given
the shortness of the S1.
The rider is in a more forward position and
so, too, their centre of gravity, by at least 5
cm. Movement by the rear of the horse at the
time of take-off accordingly exerts less effect. As a result, the force of impact on the
horse’s shoulders when it returns to earth is
less thanks to the effect of the shock-absorber
that cushions between 30% and 50% of the
weight of the impact.
The shock-absorbing effect operates only
when the horse places both forelegs on the
ground, so enabling perfect balance.

Respecto a las sillas tradicionales la S1 permite un movimiento más libre y armónico y

fase de cambio de andadura y de faena en las
diagonales; además aumenta la capacidad de
torsión.
La S1 es una silla corta y, por lo tanto, ofrece
mayor libertad de movimiento en los caballos
cada vez más cortos, fuertes y dinámicos, en
cuanto el borrén trabaja en una zona ideal y
no interfiere en el caso de caballos con asimetrías en las espaldas. En el caso de caballos con
musculatura muy desarrollada, que tienden
naturalmente a empujar hacia atrás la silla, la
S1 siendo más corta, evita este efecto negativo.
El jinete monta en posición más avanzada y
mueve su baricentro hacia adelante por lo menos 5 cm reduciendo en la fase de salto los efectos del movimiento del posterior del caballo.
De esta forma se reduce la fuerza de impacto
en los hombros en fase de recaída por efecto del
amortiguamiento que absorbe del 30 al 50% del
peso del impacto. El efecto de amortiguamiento entra en función cuando el caballo apoya en
el suelo ambas patas anteriores, consintiendo
entonces un perfecto balanceo.

THE S1 IS STARTING TO
GARNER SUCCESS
T
he new S1 jumping saddle is starting
to show its true worth. The German
champion, Janne Friederike Meyer,
was the first to try it out and is now using it
in official tournaments. She won the Aachen
Rolex Grand Prix on 17th July after coming
third in the women’s section in the national
jumping championship at Balve on 19th June.
“Initially I had doubts,” Janne Friederike
Meyer confided in us. “I had the sensation
of being seated too far above the horse because of the S1’s double tree. I soon changed
my view, though, when I found I felt much
more secure. There’s no question about it: the
upper tree is in a more forward position as
compared with a traditional saddle. For that
reason you’ve no fear of anything happening
because you’re seated on the stillest part of
the horse. That’s why I’ve held onto the test
saddle and I’ve no intention of letting it go. It
makes me feel enormously safe.
The winning feature of the S1 is its lower tree,
which is located very much to the rear. The effect is that there is no contact with the shoulders. The horse can move in complete freedom. Normally this never happens because
a traditional jumping saddle always comes
into contact with a horse’s shoulder for one
reason or another. From the outset, using it
on my stallion, Clarimo, I had the clear sensation he was improving from one jump to the
next because he felt increasingly free about
the shoulders.

“En un primer momento yo era escéptica –nos
dijo Janne Friederike Meyer- porque me parecía estar sentada demasiado lejos del caballo
a causa de los dos fustes de la S1. Pero muy
pronto me desengañé cuando entendí que me
sentía mucho más segura. El fuste superior se
encuentra netamente más adelante respecto al
de una silla tradicional y por eso se tiene la sensación de que no puede pasar nada porque estás
sentado en el punto más tranquilo del caballo.
Es por esto que me quedé con la silla de prueba
y no tengo intenciones de restituirla: transmite
una grande seguridad.
El arma vencedora de la S1 está en el hecho de
que el fuste inferior está colocado netamente
hacia atrás y por lo tanto sin ningún contacto
con el hombro. El caballo tiene la posibilidad
de moverse libre completamente, cosa que sólitamente no es posible, porque una silla de salto
tradicional de cierta forma entra siempre en
contacto con el hombro del caballo.
Cuando la utilicé con el caballo Clarimo, tuve
inmediatamente la impresión de que mejorase
de salto en salto, puesto que sentía cada vez
más la libertad de los hombros”.

he saddlery Daniel Nortier set up in
1958 is among those on the French
market that enjoy a certain standing.
His son, Dominique, offers us a current view
of the venture.
“My father started working as a saddler in
Breteuil in 1958. I joined him when I started
training on the job in 1976. Together we built
up the saddlery and specialised in sales for
leisure riding and for jumping and dressage
competitions. To continue our family tradition, my son and my daughter are already
part of the team and represent the future of
the business.
Today, the saddlery operates out of Oise
through two shops, one in Compiègne and

the other in Breteuil, between Amiens and
Beauvais. Our sales area covers départements
60, 80, 93, 95, and 02.
As a saddlery specialised in made-to-measure
saddles we started to work with Prestige in
1995. The product quality and innovative
spirit of the company instantly drew me to
them. The thing that particularly caught my

offer saddles with a saddle tree in synthetic
material, meaning superior elasticity and
lightness as well as easy adaptation to the
horse’s back. Sixteen years on I am still confident about the choice I made. Prestige is now

suited to the French market.
“Of crucial importance in serving our market
are our training sessions in Italy. Thanks to
them we extend our technical understanding
of the product and its proper use and in this
way we grow and make real progress. Following one of these training sessions 8 years ago
we pioneered the introduction in France of
the Prestige technique for measuring horses’
backs. This meant we could offer customers
made-to-measure saddles. The knock-on benefit for our sales was immediate!

testing. We handle matters in this way: once
the customer, guided by their own preferences, has selected the models to try out, we hand
them over for testing for a one-week period.
Once the customer has chosen the saddle to
buy we go to their premises, free of charge, to
take the horse’s measurements; the saddle is
made accordingly to these.
Our aim, says Dominique Nortier, winding
up the interview, is to continue our work with
Prestige because we appreciate the quality of
its products, its capacity to innovate, and its
focus on the well-being of the horse and on
comfort for the rider.”

FAMILIA TRIUNFADORA

n el mercado francés, una importante
guarnicionería es la que fundó en 1958
Daniel Nortier. Su hijo Dominique hoy
nos habla de esto.
“Mi padre comenzó a trabajar como guarnicionero en Breteuil, en 1958. Comencé con él mi
formación en este trabajo en 1976; hemos trabajado juntos para que nuestra guarnicionería
crezca y nos hemos especializado en el campo
del tiempo libre, de los concursos para el salto
de obstáculos y de la doma clásica. Siguiendo
la tradición familiar, mi hijo y mi hija están
bien integrados en este ámbito y representan el
futuro de la actividad.
Hoy la guarnicionería opera en Oise con dos
tiendas, una en Compiègne y otra en Breteuil,
entre Amiens y Beauvais. Trabajamos en los
departamentos 60, 80, 93, 95, 02.

formativas, hace unos 8 años, en Francia fuimos los primeros que propusimos a nuestros
clientes la técnica de la medición de las espaldas de los caballos para que usaran sillas a la

En Compiège y en Breteuil hoy disponemos de
una gama de 80 sillas de montar para las pruebas que se hacen de la siguiente manera: después de que el cliente, siguiendo sus personales
criterios de elección, decide los modelos que
quiere probar, se los confiamos por un período
de una semana. Cuando el cliente nos dice cuál
es la silla que pretende comprar vamos gratuitamente a donde él está, tomamos las medidas
del caballo y, teniéndolas en cuenta, preparamos la silla. Nuestro objetivo –concluye Dominique Nortier- es el de seguir colaborando con
Prestige: apreciamos la calidad de sus productos, la capacidad de innovación y la voluntad
de perseguir el respeto del caballo y el confort
del jinete”.

anessa and Florian Bondroit started
their saddlery, Equi-Libre, in March
2007. Operating as a mobile service
they provided support to riders, including
professionals, either directly or at the many
horse shows held in the Champagne-Ardenne
region.
In December 2009, to best meet all the needs
of their customers, they opened a shop at
Rosières-près-Troyes (10), which they ran
alongside their mobile unit, so strengthening
the bond they had with their customers.
The saddle testing-and-sales service they de-
livered at riding schools and during horse
shows shared a natural affinity with the
Prestige philosophy of “the right saddle for
every horse and rider team”. It was only to be
expected, therefore, that Prestige and EquiLibre would team up and form a rewarding
business relationship.
Florian Bondroit is happy with the way they

first opened its doors 25 years ago. It
retailed leather clothing and decorative
leather articles, starting with an initial floor
space of 40 sq m.. A keen equestrian and a
practitioner of leisure-time activities, Lionel
Kany, a fully qualified tanning specialist, first
expanded the shop to 100 sq m and included
a display area for saddlery. He followed this
with a further increase, up to 300 sq m, and
in this way the shop was able to offer a range
of different products and brands, making it
unique in the east of France.
The shop and Prestige crossed paths at the
Nancy Horse Show about 8 years ago. For
Lionel Kany the well-being of the horse had
always been a priority and, given this identity
of views, he saw Prestige as the ideal partner.
Thanks to the cooperation between them Le
Clos Rimbaud moved up a rung and became
a saddlery with a regional coverage.
Prestige established itself as a benchmark
both through the quality of its products and
their technical content and the shop, in addition to supplying Prestige equipment, ran
a service performing repairs in its own workshop and doing stitching on saddle pads and
clothing.
With its mobile service unit the saddlery is
regularly present at numerous events (competitions and horse shows) during which its
saddles are available to be tested. For about a
decade it has also been organising two meetings that have now become regional fixtures,
a horse show at the end of March, and its traditional “open-door sessions” in September.

n this edition of HOP we are pleased to introduce our readers to
Julien Épaillard , a new equestrian on the French scene and a recent
recruit to the Prestige team.
Julian developed his talents at stables near Cherbourg (Haras di Siva/
Etrier Cherbourgeois), where his parents started him off riding.
The conditions for his initial successes, both in Europe and internationally, were largely due to the intervention of Mr. Bideault of Haras
Nationaux, who provided him with horses such as Si Tu Viens and
Arpèges Pierreville.
Riding Hyades, Julien Épaillard first took part in the CSIO-5* Grand
Prix at La Baule. His lead horse is Icare du Manet, a 10 year old bay
that is the offspring of Papillon Rouge and Karylof II. With this horse
Julien Épaillard will obtain his best results.
Currently listed 30th in the FEI rankings, Julien has chosen the Michel
Robert Evolution saddle for himself and for his horses, in the Lux version, tailored to size. His successes include a victory, at Vejer de la
Frontera (Spain), in the 3-star Csi on the Circuito del Sol.

Fue Mr. Bideault, de Haras Nationaux, quien le permitió obtener sus

last when she won the finals in Leipzig.
HOP decided to get to know her better.
- Adelinde, when did you first get involved with
horses?
“I started at the age of six when I went to a
riding school.
I had just one aim in mind: to show my parents that I really liked riding.
That way I could have a pony all to myself.
One year at the riding school was enough
to show I truly liked riding and would never
throw in the sponge, not even if the future
meant a hard slog.
That’s how I got a pony of my own and that
was the start of everything.”
- Have you been a long-time user of Prestige products?
“I’ve only just started using Prestige saddles
and have to say that it is a marvellous brand.
Not just for the quality of its products, but
also for the service and for the company’s
knowledge of the sector. Then there’s its approach, which is undeniable innovative!
- How do you feel about Prestige?
To date my experience with Prestige has been
very positive! Not only are its personnel extremely competent, but the company is firmly

my horses. For that reason I hope Parzival and
I can continue to improve. At present, following the 2011 World Cup final win at Leipzig, we
are training for the European Championships
at the end of the season. After that, there’s the
Olympics in London next year.

suficiente para demostrar que ir a caballo me
gustaba realmente y que no lo habría dejado
ni siquiera ante la perspectiva de tenerme que
empeñar duramente. Conseguí mi propio pony
y de allí comenzó todo”.
- ¿Desde cuándo utilizas los productos Prestige?

champion while he was enjoying a brief rest
after the Munich Grand Prix, in which he
came second.
- How are things, Cristian?
“Great! I’m really happy. My World Cup
success, in Leipzig last June, has given me a
new lease of life and it puts behind me a period when I just couldn’t achieve any important wins. It also confirms my rightful place
among the top contenders in the riding world.
- Next year will see the Olympic Games in
London…
My wins, including these recent successes, will
have to be taken into account by the federation. So, I’m hoping for inclusion, on my merits, in the official German team.
- What to do you attribute your current form to?
I’m back in a position where I’ve got some
good horses that are in fit condition and with
which I can train thoroughly. It’s thanks to
them I can sustain good performances.
- What are your expectations for the future?
I’m very optimistic following these recent
results and, as I’ve just said, I have some
marvellous horses I can rely on. So, I’m very
positive about the future and look forward to
confirming my top placing in world rankings.

and archaeological sites dotted all over the
country. As we shall see, they tell us not just
about Italy but also about the Phoenicians,
the Greeks, the Etruscans, the Egyptians…
TORINO - The Museo Egizio
Turin’s Egyptian Museum (“Museo Egizio”),
housed in the historical Palazzo dell’Accademia delle Scienze, was inaugurated in 1824, an
event closely linked to the acquisition by Carlo Felice of a substantial Egyptian collection
assembled by Bernardino Drovetti of Piedmont, a former Consul General for France in
Egypt. The inscriptions posed the first important challenge in deciphering hieroglyphics
faced by J.F. Champollion. At the time the
spectacular statues of the Pharaohs, such as
“Ramses II” or the Sethi II “colossus”, those
of the divinities, such as the twenty-one lionheaded Sakhmet goddesses, and the many artistic items and papyri, were already seen as
an extraordinary body of narrative evidence
about ancient Egypt and they continue to
rank among the most important in the world
today. Among the more extraordinary papyri
the most notable are: the numerous “Books
of the dead”, the Papyrus of the Gold Mine,
and the Papyrus of the Kings (the “Turin
Royal Canon”), a list of the kings from the
very beginnings up to 1600 BC. Through the
efforts of the Italian Archaeological Mission
in Egypt, led by Ernest Schiaparelli, the Museum added to its exhibits between 1903 and
1920. In this way substantial evidence was

recovered from supervised excavations, including finds in the Tomb of Nefertari, the entire
contents of the Tomb of the architect Kha,
the Tomb of the Unknown, and the Painted
Tomb. One of its most significant acquisitions
was the Temple of Ellesiya in Nubia, which
(like the temples of Abu Simbel or the Island
of Philae) would have been submerged by the
water of the Nasser Reservoir following the
construction of the Aswan dam. At present
the museum conserves over thirty thousand
finds and is acknowledged as one of the most
important Egyptian museums worldwide.

TURÍN - El Museo Egipcio
Situado en Turín en el antiguo edificio de la
Academia de las Ciencias, fue constituido en
1824 gracias a la adquisición, por parte de Carlo Felice, de la conspicua colección egipcia del
piamontés Bernardino Drovetti, que había sido
Cónsul General de Francia en Egipto. Este primer lote, de más de 6000 piezas, determinó el
primado del Museo entre las colecciones egipcias del mundo.
Las inscripciones fueron el primer campo de
prueba importante de J.F. Champollion para
descifrar el geroglífico. Espectaculares estatuas de Faraones como “Ramsés II” o el “Co-

PERUGIA – Museo Archeologico Nazionale dell’Umbria
Umbria’s National Archaeological Museum
has, since 1948, been housed in San Domenico
di Perugia, an architectural complex the construction of which began when the Dominican
order was founded in 1233. Most of the collections trace their origins back to excavations
in the nineteenth century, a source of major
acquisitions. Examples include the so-called
Sperandio sarcophagus, and the ancient bronzes of Castel S. Mariano. As from the start of
the twentieth century the museum’s holdings
progressively increased as a result of a sizeable
quantity of prehistoric finds obtained through the acquisition of a private collection and
through a series of excavations. In 1957 the
collections, which in the interim had been fur-
ther supplemented with numerous items, was
donated by the Municipal Authority to the
State, which took over the management of the
museum in 1960. Since 1964, the year when
the Soprintendenza archeologica was instituted (the Government Office in charge of Archaeology) was instituted, finds from recent
excavations have also been included alongside
those acquired at a much earlier date. In April
2009 the museum made a clear break with the
past and its previous organization, no longer
in tune with contemporary needs and with
the new direction being taken in museum
planning and management. The content, the
selection of items, and visitor routing were renewed in order to offer the public - adults and
school tours - as clear an idea as possible of
the Umbria’s millenarian history.

Area archeologica di Piazza Cavallotti This zone, the archaeological area of Piazza
Cavallotti, is in the centre of Perugia and
located below ground level. It conserves
interesting fragments of urban building in
the Roman period.
Ipogeo dei Volumni and Necropoli del
Palazzone - A burial chamber discovered
in 1840, this is one of the most important
monuments of Etruria and forms part of
the more extensive necropolis known as the
Palazzone.
The latter includes the Antiquarium. The
Ipogeo dei Volumni (ipogeo means “underground room”), a deep excavation reached
down a steep staircase, preserves the architectural structure of a Roman house.

PERUSA - Museo Arqueológico Nacional
de Umbria
El Museo tiene su sede, desde 1948, en el complejo arquitectónico de San Domenico di Perugia cuya construcción comienza con la fundación de la Orden de los dominicos, en 1233.
La mayor parte de las colecciones proviene
de excavaciones del siglo diecinueve cuando
se hicieron importantes adquisiciones como el
sarcófago llamado del Sperandio y los bronces
arcaicos de Castel S. Mariano.
Una consistente cantidad de piezas prehistóricas, debido a la adquisición de una colección
privada y a campañas de excavación, incrementa, desde los primeros años del siglo veinte,
la solidez del museo.

Botanico
The Botanical Gardens (Orto Botanico) extend over an area where part of the intricate
water collection and distribution system was
sited. Dug into the limestone rock, that system supplied Cagliari during Rome’s republican and imperial periods. Indeed, a number of
the finest and biggest tanks, with their characteristic bottle shape, have been conserved intact. At first separate from the network, they
were later connected up with the conduits of
the water supply system constructed about
the middle of the 2nd century A.D.. One of
the settlement tanks, in the form of a broad
chamber with a barrel vault, also dates back
to this period.
Chiostro di San Domenico
The Cloister of San Domenico, in the old
quarter of Villanova, is sited alongside the
old church of the same name, which was
seriously damaged during the Second World
War. The cloister is the most outstanding
example of Gothic-Catalan art (first half of
the fifteenth century) in the city of Cagliari.
Seen in plan view it is a quadrangle with
a perimeter of 25 m along each side, open
towards the garden with round-headed
arches set on pillars. The west wing consists
of seven fifteenth century chapels with crossvaults: the spans are divided by moulded
arch undersides that rest on ornately worked
corbels. The south wing features two series
of arches that also date from the same period with its Gothic-Catalan style. The east
and north wings are the result of reconstruction work ordered by Philip II of Spain in
1598. The Cloister gives access to the central
part of the old church with its Cappella del
Rosario (Rosary Chapel), which dates from
around 1580.

and the marsh lagoons, Nora is one of the
most evocative centres of antiquity in Southern Sardinia. Today it is possible to visit
the centre of Nora, which in the imperial
Roman period - between the 1st and 4th century B.C., was located between the isthmus
and the headland. The town, with its ordered
pattern of streets, conserves the remains
of a very fine theatre, impressive traces of
thermal baths and religious buildings, as well
as private houses – some of which are of
notable value.

Zona arqueológica de Piazza Cavallotti
La zona arqueológica de Piazza Cavallotti se
encuentra en el casco histórico de Perusa, está
por debajo del nivel peatonal y conserva interesantes fragmentos del tejido urbano de edad
romana.
Hipogeo de los Volumni y Necrópolis del
Palazzone
Tumba en forma de recámara descubierta
en 1840, es uno de los más importantes monumentos de Etruria, forma parte de la más
vasta necrópolis, denominada del Palazzone.
En su ámbito está colocado el Antiquarium.
El Hipogeo de los Volumni, excavado verticalmente en el terreno, al que se entra por
una empinada escalinata, vuelve a proponer
la estructura arquitectónica de una casa romana.
CAGLIARI – Zona Arqueológica del Jardín
Botánico
El área en la que se encuentra el Jardín Botánico aloja parte del articulado sistema hídrico
de recolección y de distribución, excavado en
el banco calcáreo, que suministraba agua a la
ciudad en época republicana e imperial. Allí se
conservan, en efecto, algunas de las más bellas
y amplias cisternas de la característica forma
de botella que, en un primer momento estaban
aisladas y sucesivamente se unieron a la canalización del acueducto, realizado a mediados del
siglo II° d.C. A ese mismo período se remonta
también una de las pilas de decantación formada por una amplia cámara con bóveda de cañón.
Claustro de San Domenico
El Claustro de San Domenico, situado en el
histórico barrio de Villanova, está dislocado
lateralmente a la antigua iglesia homónima,
gravemente dañada durante el último conflicto
mundial y representa el monumento más ilustre
de arte gótico-catalán (primera mitad del siglo
XV) presente en la ciudad de Cagliari. Tiene
una planta cuadrangular con un perímetro de
aproximadamente 25 m por lado, abierto hacia
el jardín con arcos de medio punto asentados
en pilares. El ala occidental tiene siete capillas
del siglo quince, con bóvedas por arista; las arcadas están divididas por intradós adornados

con molduras que se apoyan en repisas ricamente labradas. En el ala sur, dos órdenes de
arcadas que también están relacionadas con la
misma fase de la edificación de estilo góticocatalán. Las alas oriental y norte derivan de la
reconstrucción que quiso Felipe II de España
en 1598. Desde el claustro se puede entrar en la
nave central de la antigua iglesia donde está la
Capilla del Rosario, erigida hacia 1580.
Zona Arqueológica de Nora
De antigua formación fenicia y recostada en el
espléndido y articulado promontorio de Cabo
de Pula, entre el mar y las nansas, Nora es
uno de los sitios antiguos más sugestivos de la
Cerdeña meridional. En la actualidad de Nora
se puede visitar el centro urbano que se desarrolló entre el istmo y el promontorio en edad
romana imperial, entre el I° y el IV° siglo D.C.
La ciudad, dividida por un ordenado reticulado
vial, conserva los restos de un bellísimo teatro,
de imponentes estructuras termales y religiosas
y de habitaciones privadas, algunas de grande
valor.

At the beginning of September I was in Paris
for a three-day convention. The toll it exacted on both body and soul was exhausting.
In the evening, rather than venture out with
colleagues to savour “Paris by night”, I languished on the bed haunted by the frivolous
banter of friends and their ill-concealed envy
when they frequently chided: “A globe trotter
like yourself – you get all the luck!”.
When the job is the reason you are travelling
by no stretch of the imagination do you feel
like a holiday tourist and that Friday even-
ing, the last day of the convention, I was only
too happy to be heading home the following
morning.
I had wanted to take the trip on my own,
some 800 km, with the one aim of getting
the feel of my new cabriolet: something of a
whim. Sorting out my few items of luggage I
came across one of those pamphlets left lying
around on hotel tables: Mont-Saint-Michel,
the marvel of the West. The picture on the
cover was of a rocky mount with a peak in
the middle of a huge flat expanse.

I thought of my wife. For years she had been
asking me to take her on a trip to MontSaint-Michel, a commitment I had always
dodged, for no particular reason.
Something or other triggered inside of me.
The pamphlet in my hands with its illustration of sheep, a sense of elation on ending a
work assignment, and the urge to transgress
– which often seizes me, prompted me to take
the phone and call my wife: “board the first
plane for Paris: tomorrow we’ll lunch on oysters!”.

principios de septiembre me encuentro
en París para una convención de tres
días que me ocupa la mente y el cuerpo
hasta el agotamiento, por lo que en la noche, en
vez de aventurarme en la París nocturna con los
colegas, me tumbo en la cama pensando en las
tertulias con los amigos que, con una pizca de
envidia, me dicen siempre: “!qué afortunado tú
que viajas por el mundo!...”
Cuando lo haces por trabajo no te sientes absolutamente un turista que anda de vacaciones,
y ese viernes por la noche, último día de la con-
vención, estoy contentísimo de poder marcharme al día siguiente por la mañana.
He deseado este viaje en solitario, de aproximadamente 800 km, con el objetivo de entrar
en simbiosis con mi nuevo coche descapotable,
un capricho. Arreglando mi equipaje cae entre
mis manos un folleto de los que la dirección del
hotel te deja bien visible sobre tu mesita: MontSaint-Michel, la maravilla del oeste. En la portada resalta un peñón puntiagudo en el centro
de una llanura.

me hacen levantar la bocina del teléfono y decirle a mi mujer: “¡toma el primer avión para
París!.!Para el almuerzo de mañana comemos
ostras!”.

Next morning at the airport, while waiting
for her flight to touch down, I struck up conversation with an Italo-French traveller on
his way back from Normandy. He enthused
about Étretat , plying me with photographs.
Such was the effect that I decided we would
go there directly before heading off to MontSaint-Michel. We set out in the direction of
Le Havre but stopped at Rouen, a delightful
city that because of the many artists living
and working there, including Monet, Gauguin, and Pissarro, had been the centre of
Impressionism. During Roman times it was
considered to be the most important city in
Gaul, and in the Middle Ages it was the place
where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake.
Today it is a truly perfect example of urban
design that focuses on the amenity of its civic
users. It is a pleasure to take a walk in the
centre, which has been made traffic free, and
to visit its famous gothic cathedral, NotreDame, which took several centuries to build.
Inside there are numerous tombs of nobles
and princes, including that of Richard the
Lionheart.
We reached Étretat in the early afternoon. In
the sunshine and crystal-clear light the panoramic view of the white cliffs falling sheer
into the sea was even more amazing than I
had imagined. We stayed overnight in one of
those charming apartments of the “Chambre
d’hôtes” chain following a candle-lit dinner
in a bistrot that was a throwback to a bygone age. When it comes to these things, the
French are masters!
The following morning, a Sunday, we set off
for the estuary of the Seine, crossing it on
the “Normandy Bridge” (the Pont de Normandie), an imposing civil engineering work
built in the 1990s. Its single span extends almost a kilometre, suspended 60 metres above
the estuary. On the far side of the bridge was
another town that looked like a stage setting:
Honfleur. We had the feeling of experiencing
a mirage when we saw the mount, seemingly
afloat in the huge plain, just as on the pamphlet cover.
Following a signpost of the “Chambre
d’hôtes” chain we started down an unmetalled road and arrived in a courtyard. Right
in the middle was a cottage that looked like a
picture-postcard creation: flowers in the windows and flower beds about the edges.
We were given a soothing welcome by our
host, Marie, who kindly allocated us the best
room, on the first and topmost floor with a
view of the mount.
Fried mussels are traditional Normandy fare
and for us were untried gastronomic territory.

vuelo, converso un poco con un ítalofrancés que
regresa de Normandía: me habla de Etretat con
tal entusiasmo, mostrándome incluso algunas
fotos, que decido pasar por allí inmediatamente, antes de dirigirnos a Mont-Saint-Michel.
Nos dirigimos hacia Le Havre, pero nos detenemos en Rouen, la deliciosa ciudad que fue
capital del impresionismo porque allí vivieron
y trabajaron muchísimos artistas como Monet,
Gauguin, Pissarro. En tiempos de los romanos
era considerada la ciudad más importante de la
Galia y en la Edad Media fue escenario de la
quema en la hoguera de Juana de Arco.
En verdad hoy es la clásica ciudad a medida
de hombre donde es agradable pasear por el
centro, completamente peatonal, y entrar a visitar la famosa catedral gótica de Notre-Dame
cuya edificación requirió algunos siglos. En su
interior numerosas tumbas de nobles o príncipes entre los que destaca Ricardo Corazón de
León.
Llegamos a Étretat en las primera horas de
una soleada y limpidísima tarde; el espectacular panorama de los blancos acantilados que se
precipitan en el mar es aún más grandioso de lo
que me había imaginado. Pasamos la noche en
la intimidad de uno de los muchos apartamentitos de la cadena ” Chambre d’hôtes” después
de una óptima cena a la luz de una candela en
una tasca que recordaba otros tiempos.
¡Grandes maestros los franceses!
La mañana después, domingo, nos dirigimos
hacia el grande estuario del río Sena que atravesamos por el Puente de Normandía, una
grandiosa obra de ingeniería de los años noventa, una arcada única de casi un kilómetro a 60
metros de altura sobre el estuario. Al otro lado
del puente otra pequeña ciudad-teatro: Honfleur. Mont-Saint-Michel, nuestra meta, está a
200 km y llegaremos allí al anochecer.
Se nos aparece como un espejismo el peñón
flotante en la grande llanura, igual que en la
portada del folleto.
Un cartel identificativo de la cadena ” Chambre d’hôtes” hace que viremos en una caminito
sin pavimentar que nos lleva a un patio en cuyo
centro está colocada una casita que parece dibujada: flores en las ventanas y arriates a su
alrededor.
Nos recibe una amable señora, de nombre Ma-

rie, que nos tranquiliza y nos da la mejor recámara, en el primer y último piso, precisamente
con vista hacia el islote.
“Les moules frites” son un plato típico de la
Normandía que nunca habíamos probado.
Contrariamente a lo que se puede deducir del
nombre, se trata de un estofado de mejillones
sazonados con mostaza picante, servidos en
una olla caliente y lo que hay de frito es el
acompañamiento de papas que comemos como
si fuera el pan. Naturalmente, en alternativa
a los óptimos vinos franceses se bebe sidra,
un distilado de manzana, y para terminar, un
Calvados. Mont-Saint-Michel está clasificado
como Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad.
El paisaje es literalmente mágico; cielo y mar
cortan en dos partes el horizonte y, en el centro,
está el peñón.
La leyenda dice que la abadía fue fundada por
un cierto Saint Aubert, obispo de Avranches, en
el año 708 después de un sueño e inmediatamente se volvió meta de peregrinaje. Luego fue
toda una sucesión de construcciones y fortificaciones incluso militares que permitieron, por
ejemplo durante la guerra de los Cien años en

bowl. The only fried element are the accompanying potatoes, which are eaten as if they
were bread. Naturally, as an alternative to
France’s excellent wines, you can drink cider, a distillate of apples, and finish off with
a Calvados. Mont-Saint-Michel enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status. The landscape
is simply magical: sky and sea split the horizon between them and at the centre stands the
rocky mount. Legend has it that the abbey
was founded in 708 by a certain Saint Aubert,
the bishop of Avranches, after he had had a
dream. It at once became a centre of pilgrimage. Subsequent cycles building work and fortification, including military works, enabled it
– for example, during the One Hundred Years
War in the 14th century – to hold out against
a siege for 30 years! In the second half of the
1800s the abbey was converted into a prison
at the time of the revolution during the Second Empire. Since 1969 it has been kept going
by a community of monks.
An understanding of the religious history,
stretching back over one thousand years,
was possible thanks to tours of the historical monuments led by a lecturer and to the
museums in the old quarter, which have collections of weapons, paintings, time pieces,
and model ships. Finally, there’s the matter of
the tide, an event that amazes even the most
blasé. The water starts to appear on the horizon slowly and unstoppably. Or so it seems.
As it draws near you realize that its speed
of advance is that of a man who is running.
Sound alarms with loud sirens start up in advance. It is by no means unusual, however,
for unheeding motorists to leave their vehicle
parked beyond the permitted time. The sensation, when you return to terra ferma, is that
of arriving from another world. The last stop
on our strange, improvised, unplanned trip
around Normandy was Cancale, an agreeable
surprise both to the eyes and to the palate. A
leaflet we noticed at the restaurant on the first
evening announced: “Cancale, the sea served
up in a bowl”.
If you go there you understand why. Even
in ancient times the Romans had a high regard for the oysters and shellfish of this village, with its constant coming and going of
oyster farmers and seafarers. At low tide a
vast expanse of territory (over 350 hectares)
is exposed, all divided up into squares, where
tractor-drawn carts are literally loaded up
with tons of oysters probably bound for all
parts of Europe.

around the small port, sorted by calibre,

momentos que hipnotizan low compared to what they fetch in our restaurants. It is said that the plankton, especially abundant is this gulf, gives a particular aroma to what is fished. Speaking for myself, as
a non-expert, all I can say is that we ate very
well. All my wife and I could talk about next
day, throughout the entire return journey,
were the details of our “romantic escape”.
No amount of words or pictures, however,
could describe all the marvels in that part of
the world. The only thing to do is go there
and experience them first hand.

En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX la revolución
del Segundo Imperio transformó la abadía en
prisión.
Desde 1969 una comunidad monástica está
presente en la abadía. Visitas guiadas por un
conferencista de los monumentos históricos nos
ayudan a entender la historia religiosa de más
de mil años, gracias también a los museos situados en el pueblo donde se conservan colecciones de armas, pinturas, esculturas, relojes
y modelos de naves. Y he aquí que finalmente
se presenta el fenómeno de la marea, capaz de
maravillar hasta al más indiferente de los mortales: el agua comienza a aparecer en el horizonte de forma lenta e imparable, parece, pero
en realidad cuando se acerca uno se da cuenta
de que su velocidad de avanzada corresponde a
la de un hombre que corre.
Avisos acústicos con potentes sirenas se activan
preventivamente, pero no es muy raro que alguna persona distraída deje el automóvil aparcado más allá del límite permitido.
La sensación, cuando se regresa a la tierra firme, es la de que llegas de otro mundo.
La última meta de nuestro viaje a Normandía,
viaje extraño, improvisado, sin programar, es
Cancale, un agradable descubrimiento para los
ojos y para el paladar.
Un folleto que vimos en el restaurante la noche

anterior decía: “Cancale, el mar servido en una
bandeja”. Si vas a allí entiendes por qué.
Ya los antiguos romanos apreciaban las ostras
y los mariscos de este pueblo donde atracan y
zalpan continuamente los ostricultores y marineros.
La baja marea hace que emerja una enorme
extensión de territorio (más de 350 hectáreas)
subdividido en recuadros donde carros arrastrados por tractores son cargados literalmente
con toneladas de ostras que, probablemente, se
enviarán a toda Europa.
Numerosos tenderetes alrededor del pequeño
puerto las exhiben subdivididas por calibre lo
que determina también el precio, increíblemente bajo si lo comparamos con los de nuestros
restaurantes.
Dicen que el plancton, particularmente rico
en este golfo, da un aroma especial a lo que se
pesca: por lo que me concierne, aun sin ser un
experto, puedo sólo confirmar que he comido
óptimamente. Al día siguiente, durante todo el
viaje de regreso, mi mujer y yo no hicimos otra
cosa que recordar los innumerables detalles de
nuestra romántica fuga. Pero no hay palabras
ni imágenes suficientes para describir todas
las maravillas que existen en cada rincón del
mundo.
Sólo tienes que ir para vivirlas.

RABBIT WITH PORE MUSHROOMS

he end of September is the right time
for mushrooms. We recommend them
as an accompaniment to a delicate
meat. Rabbit is an example and may be prepared by cutting into pieces, rinsing in water,
and marinading for a brief few minutes.
Take a pan and lightly fry thinly diced onion
and bacon in oil and butter. Add the pieces
of rabbit and stir them every now and then so

that they become properly golden. To complete the cooking, which takes about half an
hour, add vegetable stock and white wine to
the pan. In the meantime finely slice the pore
mushrooms. They must previously have been
cleaned first by scraping with a knife and then

cloth to remove any residual earth.

be present at Equita’Lyon, Lyon’s international horse show. This year all efforts will
be directed at generating enthusiasm in the
general public for this noble animal. The
closing event in our schedule is a traditional
fixture, Fieracavalli at Verona, to be held the
3rd through the 6th of November. This year,
as always, it will be aimed at those who love
horses and everything to do with riding.
