LONDON
I
n the sporting world the Olympic Games
are the event that matter most. Every 4
years athletes everywhere aspire to participate and to mount the podium. As a venue
that draws together men and women from
different countries, with a distinct history,
culture, and way of life, the Games are also
a stage where the differences of this world intermingle.
An undertaking with a global reach, such as
Prestige, can only look ahead to the Olympic
Games that London is preparing to host with
intense interest. Having a global reach means
being able to reconfigure the business to be
competitive on markets that have different
commercial traditions and economic models
that are more or less advanced.
Indeed, because it operates daily across 5
continents Prestige, necessarily, has to be like
an athlete striving for their best performance.
Through improving its products, production
processing, and customer focus, and through
non-stop investment in research and development, Prestige prepares to win its own Olympic contest, in the guise of the challenges

movement is pivotal for the riders and the
national federations that have subscribed to

to this fraternal coming together that is the
Olympic Games.

os Juegos Olímpicos son el evento deportivo más importante en los que cada
4 años todos los atletas sueñan con participar y ganar. Un teatro donde se encuentran
hombres y mujeres de varios países con historia, cultura y estilo de vida diferentes. En pocas
palabras, un teatro donde se mezclan todas las
diversidades del mundo.
Una empresa internacionalizada como Prestige indudablemente mira con gran interés a las
Olimpiadas que Londres está por acoger. Tener
una dimensión internacional significa poseer la
capacidad de renovar la propia actividad para
ser competitivos en mercados con tendencias
comerciales y modelos económicos diferentes,
más o menos evolucionados.
De hecho, operando diariamente en 5 continentes Prestige actúa como un atleta que quiere

or centuries, indeed, for millennia, horses have been the sole
means of locomotion available to man, a source of energy usable wherever they were needed – in the fields and in the mines –
and as much a friend as dogs, if not more so. It was with the industrial
revolution that horses started to become dispensable, passed over as
a means of locomotion and as source of energy: not, as friends and
as companions.
It is no wonder that gradually numerous equestrian sports emerged
and thrived. With time they naturally established themselves as part
of the modern Olympic Games, which were fostered by the French
baron, Pierre de Coubertin, to encourage world peace through sports
competitions. The Ancient Olympic Games were an occasion for
which even war came to a halt.
The first modern Games, in Athens in 1896, which saw 285 athletes
compete on behalf of 14 nations, did not include any horse riding
discipline, despite plans to the contrary. The Transporting the horses
to Greece proved too challenging.

Por eso no nos tiene que sorprender si alrededor del caballo se han desarrollado numerosos
deportes que con el tiempo han encontrado su
natural colocación también en los Juegos Olímpicos modernos, promocionados por el barón
francés Pierre de Coubertin. Su objetivo era el
de incentivar la paz en el mundo por medio de
competiciones deportivas con el mismo espíritu
de las Olimpíadas de la antigüedad, frente a las
cuales se detenían incluso las guerras.
En la primera edición, que tuvo lugar en Atenas
en 1896 con la participación de 285 atletas en
representación de 14 naciones, no estaba incluida ninguna disciplina ecuestre:
inicialmente la equitación había sido prevista,
pero resultó demasiado difícil transportar los
caballos a Grecia.

orses and riders did not make their Olympic debut until the
1900 Games in Paris, which attracted 1066 entrants from 21
nations. Three riding competitions were held: show jumping,
in which Belgium took the gold medal, the high jump, for which the
gold medal was shared between a French rider and an Italian, Gian
Giorgio Trissino, and the long jump, won by another Belgium with the
same Italian rider, Gian Giorgio Trissino, runner up. This made Trissino the first athlete to win two medals in two different equestrian disciplines. In the national medal table, Belgium took 4 medals, France 3,
and Italy 2.

I
n the following Olympic Games held in Stockholm
1912, horse and rider featured more strongly. The
number of competitions increased to 5: individual
dressage, individual show jumping, team show jumping, individual eventing and team eventing. This range
of events was kept in the next two Olympic Games, in
Antwerp in 1920 and in Paris 1924. A sixth discipline,
team dressage, was added in the 1928 Games in Amsterdam and, with the sole exception of the 1960 Olympics in Rome, has became a permanent fixture.

ne hundred years on from the 1912 Games, with the London
Olympics now pending this summer, the updated medal tally
includes the 2008 Games in China. With 42 medals (of which
21 gold, 10 silver, and 11 bronze) to its credit, Germany leads all other
nations that in the Olympic Games to date have taken part in one
or more of the horse riding disciplines. The countries in that list are
thirty in total and between them, including gold, silver, and bronze,
they have claimed 395 medals.

muestra en la cima de la clasificación por número de medallas a

* The Olympic Games are not to be confused with an Olympiad. An Olympiad is the four-year interval that separates successive Olympic Games.
Even in years when the Games have not been held - 1916, 1940, and 1944 - the count of the corresponding Olympiads was kept. As a result, the
2008 Peking Olympic Games marked the twenty-ninth Olympiad and the 2012 Games in London will coincide with the thirtieth.
* The first Olympic Games of modern times were held in Athens in 1896. Starting in 1924, Winter Olympic Games were launched specifically for
winter sports. Additionally, there are Paralympics, in which the competitors are persons with disabilities. As of 1994 the practise of holding the
Winter Olympics in the same year as the Summer Games stopped and a two-year interval between them was introduced.
* The symbol probably most widely associated with the event are the five rings on the Olympic flag, hoisted at all the Games since 1920. The
five rings shown on the flag are each of a different colour and are interlinked against a white background. There are five rings, as there are
continents: Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and Oceania. The interlinking of the rings represents the universality of the Olympic spirit.
* The colours chosen for the five rings are (from left to right): blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Together with the white of the background,
these colours, at the time they were chosen, represented the various colours in the flags of all nations worldwide. This colour combination is,
accordingly, symbolic of all the countries and the widely held belief that the colour of each circle represents a given continent is misconceived.
They are a token of the activity of the Olympic Movement and represent the union of the five continents and the coming together of athletes
from all over the world at the Olympic Games.
* Five sports only have continually featured in the Olympics from their outset in 1896: field and track athletic events, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, and swimming. The list might well include rowing, which was planned for 1896, but the heats were cancelled owing to bad weather.

1963) is a German rider who is a 4-time
Olympic champion. His victories at the

Olympics in the individual show jumping; in 1996
at the Atlanta Olympics in the team show jumping; and in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics in the
team show jumping. His tally of awards speaks
volumes for his standing as a specialist in the
jumping discipline: not one of those available has
eluded him. He won two team titles at the World
Equestrian Games in 1994 and in 1998, and three
team as well as two individual golds at the European Championships.

an Millar (Halifax, 6th January 1947) is a Canadian
rider who, having qualified nine times for the Olympics, holds the record – along with the Austrian sailing champion, Hubert Raudaschl – for appearances at the
Games. A member of his national equestrian team since
1971, he has had a place in the Canadian contingent at the
Olympic Games between 1972 (the Munich Games) and
2008. It was in that year, in Peking, that he won his first
medal, a silver in the team show jumping event.
Ian Millar has become one of the most prolific award winners and is now one of the best know riders in the world.
In Canada he has won ten national Jumping Champion-
ships (1983, 1986-1991, 1993, 2004 e 2007) and has won
more Grand Prix and derby events than any other rider.
On the international scene his most outstanding successes
have been at the Pan American Games: they include, in
team jumping events, one gold (1987), four silvers (1979,
1983, 1991, and 2007), and one bronze (1999), and, competing individually, two golds (1987, 1999) and one bronze
(1979). In 1988 and 1989 he reached the finals in the World
Cup. His long track record has earned him the nickname
“Captain Canada”. Prestige Italia and Ian Millar have developed a saddle together that bears his name.

THE TREASURES OF
LOMBARDY
A
risk for travellers in Italy is that of identifying a region with its best known “showcase”
locality. Examples? When you think of the Veneto region, Venice springs to mind, in
the case of the Tuscany region, Florence, for Lazio, Rome, and so on. Wrongly. In Italy
every region has enormous cultural resources and to narrow one’s view to what the most important destinations offer is to neglect the lion’s share.
For this reason, starting with this issue of HOP, our intention is not to acquaint the reader with
various tourist and cultural destinations dotted about Italy, but to introduce them region by
region, and to give prominence to monuments, churches, town squares, and museums that may
lie off the beaten track but are still worth visiting.
Our starting point is a region in Northern Italy, Lombardy. As regards its main centre, Milan,
we dutifully advise readers that no visit, however hurried, should leave out the following “jewels”: the Duomo, a cathedral whose construction started in 1386; its well-known Cenacolo di
Leonardo da Vinci (his painting of the Last Supper), housed in the refectory of the church,
Santa Maria delle Grazie; the Pinacoteca di Brera (Brera picture gallery), one of Italy’s most
important art collections, and the impressive Castello Sforzesco with its many municipal museums …. At this point, however, we stop. With the promise of returning to the topic of Milan,
we direct our attention instead to some of the many other attractions of the region, notably, in
the provinces of Pavia, Brescia, and Mantova.

n un viaje a Italia, puede ocurrir que se confunda una región con su joya más preciosa.
Por eso, pensando en Véneto dices Venecia, pensando en Toscana Florencia, en Lazio
Roma y etcétera. Cometemos un error porque en Italia cada región tiene un patrimonio
cultural tan inmenso que limitar el conocimiento a lo que ofrecen los destinos más importantes
quiere decir omitir una parte considerable de ello.
Es por esto que con este número de HOP no queremos sólo proponer al lector unos destinos turístico-culturales diseminados en el territorio italiano, sino proponérselos región por región, para
dar espacio a monumentos, iglesias, plazas, museos tal vez fuera de los itinerarios más clásicos
pero que merecen una visita.
Empezamos con una región del norte de Italia, Lombardía, recordando que una visita, aunque sea
muy rápida, a su ciudad más importante, Milán, no puede prescindir de joyas como su catedral
(el Duomo), cuya construcción se empezó en 1386; el Cenáculo de Leonardo da Vinci, que se
encuentra en el refectorio de la Iglesia de Santa Maria delle Grazie; la Pinacoteca de Brera, una
de la más importantes colecciones de arte en Italia, y el imponente Castello Sforzesco con sus
museos cívicos… es mejor pararse aquí prometiendo volver a hablar de Milán y dirigirse hacia
uno de los tantos destinos ofrecidos por la región, y más en detalle por las provincias de Pavía,
Brescia y Mantua.

VIGEVANO - PIAZZA DUCALE
Vigevano is a town in the province of Pavia
with a rich assortment monuments dating
back to the 14th and 15th centuries, when it
was part of the duchy of Milan. Its Piazza Ducale, one of the most beautifully proportioned
squares in Italy, was built at the order of Ludovico il Moro, Duke of Milan, as a sort of
“antechamber” before entering his castle (the
Castello cittadino). Its construction started in
1492, the works lasted for two years, and in
October 1494 the new square was ready for the
visit of Carlo VIII. There is no doubt that Bramante was involved in the design. Leonardo
da Vinci, who was present during the works,
drew inspiration from them for a number of
designs included in his codices. Piazza Ducale
is one of the first examples of a Renaissance
“piazza” based on the Roman “forum” model
and is one finest specimens of Lombard ar-
chitecture in the fifteenth century. The square
takes the form of an elongated rectangle, 134
meters long and 48 wide, built on three sides
(the fourth is taken up by the Cathedral). At
the time of Ludovico il Moro, the appearance
of the square was different to what it is now.
Two triumphal arches cut across the arcades
where, at present, via del Popolo and via Silva
are. Access to the castle was up a long stone
ramp, used by horses and carts, which was in
the middle of the square and in line with the
current entrance under the tower. The baroque
façade of the Cathedral (Duomo) was entirely
absent. Today, Piazza Ducale is the centre of
the town, both its historical and its modern
centre. A forum where Vigevano society gathers, it is akin to a stage set that appeals through its power of evocation and its proportions.
Arturo Toscanini, the great musician, despite

failing health, asked to be taken to Vigevano
and to sit at the tables of the bars, because
he considered Piazza Ducale to be a musical
symphony, an orchestral composition on four
sides, like the four movements of a symphony.
Under the arcades, the commercial premises
- where previously wool and silk sellers plied
their trade - now offer visitors facilities for leisure (cafés, bars, art galleries) and high-class
shopping (clothing, jewellery, footwear). Piazza Ducale is still today the main entrance route
to Castello Visconteo Sforzesco. By taking the
large staircase, beneath the Torre del Bramante, the visitor reaches the castle courtyard where they can look at the areas that have been
restored or carry on upwards, to the top of the
Torre del Bramante, and enjoy a sweeping view
of the entire town.
VIGEVANO – PIAZZA DUCALE
Vigevano es una de la ciudades de la provincia
de Pavía rica en monumentos que se remontan
a los siglos XIV y XV durante los cuales formó parte del Ducado de Milán. Piazza Ducale,
una de las más armoniosas de Italia, se construyó por voluntad de Ludovico el Moro, señor
de Milán, como antecámara de ingreso al Castillo de la ciudad. Los hechos sobre la construcción de la Plaza se remontan a 1492, las obras
duraron dos años y en octubre de 1494 la nueva
plaza acogió la visita de Carlo VIII.
Está aclarada la intervención en el proyecto
por parte de Bramante, mientras que Leonardo
da Vinci que estaba presente durante las obras
tomó inspiración para unos dibujos incluidos en
sus códigos.
Piazza Ducale representa uno del los primeros
modelos de plaza renacentista desarrollados
sobre el modelo del “forum” romano, asimismo
uno de los mejores ejemplos de la arquitectura
lombarda del siglo XV.
Se presenta como un rectángulo alargado de
134 metros de longitud y 48 de anchura con tres
lados (el cuarto está ocupado por el Duomo).
En la época de Ludovico el Moro, la Plaza
presentaba un aspecto diferente del actual:
dos arcos triunfales interrumpían los pórticos
en correspondencia con las hodiernas via del
Popolo y via Silva; para acceder al Castillo se
utilizaba una ancha rampa de piedras transitable por caballos y carros colocada en medio de
la Plaza y en línea con el ingreso actual por
debajo de la torre.
Hoy Piazza Ducale es el corazón antiguo y moderno de la ciudad, la sala de Vigevano, un espacio escenográfico muy sugestivo y armonioso. El famoso músico Arturo Toscanini, aunque
enfermo, pidió que lo llevaran a Vigevano para

sentarse en las mesas de los cafés porque consideraba Piazza Ducale como una sinfonía
musical, una composición orquestal con cuatro
lados, similar a los cuatro movimientos de las
sinfonías.
Por debajo de los pórticos las tiendas, antes
ocupadas por comerciantes de lana y seda, hoy
ofrecen a los visitantes confort y relax (café,
bar y galerías de arte) y compras de calidad
(ropa, joyas y zapatos). Piazza Ducale es todavía el ingreso principal al Castello Visconteo
Sforzesco. Subiendo la escalera situada por
debajo de la Torre de Bramante, se puede acceder al patio del Castillo y visitar los espacios
reestructurados o subir a la Torre bramantesca
para tener una vista completa de la ciudad.
SIRMIONE – IL CASTELLO SCALIGERO
The west bank of Lake Garda lies in the Province of Brescia, of which Sirmione is its farthermost town. Beyond this point the lake is
part of Veneto Region. The Rocca di Sirmione, built in approximately 1278 by Mastino I
della Scala, the ruler of Verona, was probably
founded on the remains of a Roman fortification. Owing to its border position, Sirmione was crucial to the system of defence and
control over Lake Garda put in place by the
Della Scala family, and its dock, still in a perfect state of upkeep, is a rare example of fortification built to guard a port. The walls and
the three biggest towers are notable for their
swallow-tailed crenellation, a characteristic of
architecture associated with the Della Scala
family. From behind these three towers rises
an imposing keep, 47 metres high, beneath
which are the cells where the prisoners were
held. About one century later two courtyards
were added and also separate fortifications,
linked by barbicans to the main fortification,
to strengthen the defences of the fort. In 1405
Venice annexed Sirmione and it became part
of the Venetian Republic, following which
work was undertaken to make the walls stouter and to enlarge the dock, which was by
then obsolete. The dock is likewise fortified by
towers, which, unlike those inside the castle,
do not have swallow-tailed crenellations. Run-

ning along one side of the castle is a moat,
which joins up directly with the lake. The present appearance of the castle took shape during the course of restoration work between
1917 and 1935. A visit to the castle, entirely
surrounded by water, will include entry to the
courtyards through an internal arcade where
there is a museum with Roman and Medieval
stone slabs. Moving beyond the drawbridge
towards the inner enclosure, the visitor can
climb up the keep and along the top of the
walls. The splendid view encompasses the
dock, evocative of the Della Scala fleet that
sheltered there so long ago, and a strikingly
beautiful panorama.
SIRMIONE – EL CASTELLO SCALIGERO
La orilla occidental del Lago de Garda se sitúa
en la provincia de Brescia, de la que Sirmione
es la última ciudad antes de llegar a la parte véneta del lago. La Rocca de SIrmione, construida alrededor de 1278 por Mastino I della Scala

por medio de barbacanas para aumentar las
defensas de la fortificación. En 1405 Venecia

la ya obsoleta dársena de los Scaligeri. También la dársena está protegida por torres que,
a diferencia de las que se encuentran en el interior del castillo, no presentan almenas de cola

romanas y medievales. Pasando por el puente
levadizo que lleva al segundo recinto, es posible

de los muros desde los cuales se contempla la
sugestiva dársena, antiguo refugio de la flota
scalígera, y un panorama muy hermoso.
MANTOVA - MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE
Mantova has much to offer – its Palazzo Ducale, one of the most sumptuous palaces in
Renaissance Europe, its Palazzo Te, a magnificent ducal villa, the Cuomo, Piazza delle
Erbe, the basilica di Sant’Andrea and … its
national archaeological museum. The area
where the museum is now located was from
the mid sixteenth century up to the end of the
nineteenth century the site of the Court Theatre of the Gonzaga family and subsequently
of the Hapsburg Empire. The building is modelled on La Scala in Milan, with adjustments
to take account of the site. The limited space,
cramped by the existing walls of the other buildings, was an obstacle to constructing pro-
per theatre boxes and imposed an elongated
shape on the auditorium. Following Italian
unification the building, by then used only
occasionally and wholly neglected, was put
up for sale by the State in 1896 and bought
by Mantova municipal authority which used
it as a market for silk worm cocoons and
then in 1930 as a fruit and vegetable market.
Mantova municipal authority then made a
gift of it to the Cultural Heritage Ministry
and at that point reconstruction work began
with the aim of conserving a notable example
of late nineteenth-century early industrialisation architecture, in which the original
external appearance was maintained and an

archaeological museum was made out of it
for housing finds from the town and from the
many archaeological sites in the Province of
Mantova. The interior is divided horizontally
by three slab floors, with views looking both
inwards and outwards, so as not to lose the
idea of the original building. The collections
of the museum, under reconstruction, include Neolithic artefacts from the Bronze Age,
as well as Etruscan, Veneto, Celtic, Roman,
Lombard, Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance exhibits.
MANTOVA - MUSEO ARQUEOLÓGICO NACIONAL
Son muchos los destinos que Mantua nos
ofrece. Se empieza del Palazzo Ducale que
era uno de los más suntuosos palacios reales
de la Europa renacentista, para concluir con
Palazzo Te, magnífica mansión ducal, sin olvidar el Duomo, Piazza delle Erbe, la Basilica
di Sant’Andrea y… el Museo Arqueológico
nacional. La zona donde ahora surge el museo,
desde mediados de 1500 hasta finales de 1800
fue la sede del Teatro di Corte de los Gonzaga
y luego del imperio habsbúrgico.

LET’S COOK SPAGHETTI

trictly speaking, to prepare this dish one needs an ingredient
not easily found outside of Italy: “vongole veraci”, one of
the proud boasts of Neapolitan cuisine. Undaunted, however,
we’ll settle for the clams the fishmonger normally supplies on such
occasions.
Cook the spaghetti in water with a pinch of salt. While waiting for
them to cook, put enough oil in the pan to cover the bottom together
with a crushed clove of garlic and paprika. Then add the clams. These
should have been made to open on the pan before starting. Drain off
any surplus water from the clams and add chopped parsley. An instant
before the spaghetti is fully cooked tip it into the pan and complete
the cooking. Serve with a good light dry white wine: a Falanghina del
Beneventano would do nicely.
