JESUS AND THE LAW
In today’s continuation of the
Sermon on the Mount, Jesus
addresses the relationship between
the current interpretation of the law
of Moses and his own. He insists
that he has come to fulfill, not
abolish the law. Jesus is explicit
here. He repeats the phrase, “You
have heard . . .” with the counterpoint, “But I
say . . .” He will not settle for mere avoidance
of outright murder or adultery or lying. He
goes to the source of murder—hatred,
resentment, spite. He insists on chaste living.
He overrules the one-sided loopholes that
allow men to divorce women, a law based on
the view of women as property. He disallows
all the means that people employ to play fast
and loose with marriage. His words urge
mutual fidelity. His listeners and followers are
to honor the law wholly and not minimally.
The consequences of failure are clear and
severe. The smallest are watching. They are
those rendered powerless by age or ignorance
or circumstance. These little ones depend on
the word and action of the mature and
knowledgeable, and they are not to be
betrayed.
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — God allows us to make
choices, but we are not to choose injustice
or sinfulness (Sirach 15:15-20).
Psalm — Blessed are they who follow the
law of the Lord! (Psalm 119).
Second Reading — God’s wisdom is
mysterious and hidden (1 Cor 2:6-10).
Gospel — Jesus has come not to abolish
but to fulfill the law and the prophets
(Matthew 5:17-37 [20-22a, 27-28, 33-34a,
37]).
JESUS Y LA LEY
En la continuación del Sermón de la
Montaña, Jesús explica como él
interpreta la Ley de Moisés. Jesús
insiste que él ha venido a cumplir la
ley no a abolirla. Él repite la frase
“Ustedes han escuchado que se
dijo…” y contrastando dice “pero yo
les digo…” No se conforma con
denunciar el homicidio, la mentira o el
adulterio. Él va al origen del homicidio: el
odio, el resentimiento, el rencor. Jesús
menciona la importancia de una vida casta. Él
aclara en qué consiste el adulterio;
mencionando cómo los varones utilizan la ley
para hacer de la mujer una propiedad y
deshacerse de ella y del vínculo del
matrimonio. Sus palabras promueven la
fidelidad mutua. Aquellos que lo escuchan y lo
siguen cumplen la Ley en su totalidad y no solo
unas partes, pues las consecuencias son claras y
severas. Los niños están viendo y por su edad,
ignorancia o circunstancia son vulnerables.
Ellos dependen de las palabras y acciones de
las personas maduras y sabías, a los niños no se
les traiciona.

Lent: Fasting and Abstinence
We are asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Fridays Lent. This means, one full
meal a day with 2 smaller ones. And to
abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday
and the other Fridays during Lent. This is for
all 18 years of age up to 59. Exceptions are
for those on medications or have other health
concerns.
Stations of the Cross
Join us every Friday evening at 7pm as
we walk and pray the Stations recalling
our Lord’s suffering walk to Calvary.
Cuaresma: Ayunar y Abstinencia
Se nos pide como Católicos, ayunar el
miércoles de ceniza y el viernes santo. Esto es,
solamente una comida completa durante el día
Igualmente, no comer carne el miércoles de

Fish Fry/Chalupa Fridays
During Lent, come by the Parish hall and
pick up your fish fry plate. Or, if you prefer,
pick up a plate of 3 chalupas. Serving is from
5pm to 8pm. We ask $6.00 per plate.

Pasen a recoger su platillo de pescado frito
cada viernes durante la cuaresma o si prefiere

A parish mission is planned for March 31st
