MARCH 16, 2014—SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
CATHOLIC
CHURCH
We are Catholic Christians striving to love beyond all boundaries and to continue the mission of Christ.
And he was transfigured before them;
his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
conversing with him.

HOMELESS MINISTRY
I want to share an experience that occurred a couple of weeks ago in the Wilmington area on Homeless Ministry. We were checking out an area where we
often find people living on the street. There was a bicycle tire sticking out of
an alley and we went to see if someone was there. As we pulled in, we saw a
young man in his 20s sitting on a rock with his head cradled in his hands. As we
stopped, those of us on the team commented that it looked like he was having a rough
day—the feeling just emanated from him.
We got out of the car and told him we had lunches and water to offer to him. A feeling of relief
washed over his face. He shared that he was starving and “thinking of shop-lifting and not shoplifting” over and over. He was so grateful for the lunch, water and the few extras we had to offer
that day.
I left with the feeling I so often have when I go out to my homeless brothers and sisters: how
amazing is the gratitude shown for what would seem like so little to me.
God not only multiplies loaves and fish. In this context, He solved a moral dilemma that a
good man in a tough situation was facing. God is able to do this with the help of all of you. We
truly are His hands and feet, His smile and loving warmth, His eyes seeing Himself in them. So
thank you so much for your support.
This thank you also goes for the grooming bag supplies you provide during Lent. For the
homeless, it is “Christmas” whenever they receive a grooming bag. These help give dignity to
each of them, as they are able to be clean and put on a new pair of socks. If you still have the
bag you were given, please fill and return it to our cart outside of church any Saturday evening
or Sunday through Palm Sunday. If you missed out on picking up a bag, they are still available.
GROOMING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS

Estaba tan

SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES FAITH SHARING MEETING
Thursday, March 27th, 7 to 9 PM, Parish Center
Imagine what it would have been like to watch Jesus heal the man born blind—a miracle of grace
and mercy! But Jesus did not just heal the man’s physical ailment. He healed the man spiritually
as witnessed by the man proclaiming, “I do believe, Lord.” We often find ourselves in need of
physical and spiritual healing. Think of a time when an experience of healing has made you
a better Christian. Why not share that experience with others?
We’ll reflect upon the readings for the Fourth Sunday of Lent:
1 Samuel 16:1b ,6-7, 10-13a; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41

LENTEN SPRING
Lent is closely associated with the transition from Winter to Spring, an image
of death to new life. The word comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word ‘lencten’
meaning springtime. Traces of the Church’s preparation for Easter can be
found in the second century. Lent originally was the period of intense prayer,
fasting, and reflection for those adults who were to be baptized at Easter. By
the 7th Century, forty days of fast and prayer had been extended to the entire
Church.
Fasting supporting one’s prayers, or almsgiving (giving to the needy from
what is saved through fasting and abstinence), and abstinence have always
been a part of the Lenten experience. Denying oneself a basic human need such
as food for a period of time may be done for different reasons, such as promoting self-discipline or strengthening our prayer life.

SEGUNDO DOMINGO
consagrados, Cristo vivo bajo

Together in Mission is a wonderful way for each of us
and our Parish Community to reach out to our Catholic family throughout the Los Angeles Archdiocese who need our
help and share the many blessings that we have been given at
St. Margaret Mary’s. Did you know that all money contributed to Together in Mission MUST, by law, be used to support the goals of this program and cannot be used for any
other reason.
Where we are as of March 6th:
Our Parish Goal: $128,978
Pledges to Date: $55,791
Balance to go: $73,187
Families Participating: 249
As you can see, we still need to receive pledges for about
$73,187. If you have not made a pledge yet, please prayerfully consider joining our Parish Community in making a pledge
to help the poorest of the poor in our Catholic communities
within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A Pledge of $50 is only $10 a month for five months, a pledge of $100 is only $20
a month and the Archdiocese will send payment envelopes
on a monthly basis. Commitment envelopes are available in
the pews or at the Parish office. Thank you, Deacon Dan

MENSAJE DEL PAPA FRANCISCO
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,

A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Lent, I would like to offer some helpful thoughts on our path of conversion
as individuals and as a community. These insights are inspired by the words of
Saint Paul: “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was
rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become
rich” (2 Cor 8:9). The Apostle was writing to the Christians of Corinth to encourage them to be generous in helping the faithful in Jerusalem who were in need.
What do these words mean for us Christians today? What does this invitation to
poverty, a life of evangelical poverty, mean for us today?
