SECOND SCRUTINY
Weekend of March 5/6
In preparation for baptism at Easter, the second of three scrutinies will be celebrated at the
6:00 p.m. Mass this weekend. The scrutinies
are rituals that are part of the final preparation
for the sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) for those in the RCIA
process at Easter. They invite the catechumens
and all of the assembly to reflect on their need
for God’s healing.
In the Cycle A reading today, we hear the
story of the man born blind. Some are guessing
about the reasons for this disability, thinking
that it is a punishment from God for the sinfulness of the man’s parents. Like them, we can
sometimes wonder about the suffering in our
lives or in the world around us and our image
of God becomes distorted. This scrutiny challenges us to let go of blaming God. God is a
God of love and He walks with us every day, in

En preparación para el bautismo en la Pascua,
el segundo de tres escrutinios será celebrado en
la Misa del Sábado a las 7 PM este fin de semana. Los escrutinios son rituales que son parte de
la preparación final para los sacramentos de la
iniciación Cristiana (Bautismo, Confirmación y
Primera Comunión) para los que están en el proceso de RICA en la Pascua. Los escrutinios invitan a los catecúmenos y a la asamblea a reflexionar en su necesidad de la sanación de Dios.
En el ciclo de lecturas A, oímos la historia del
ciego de nacimiento. Algunos se hacen figuraciones sobre las razones de su ceguera, pensando que es un castigo de Dios por los pecados de
los padres de este hombre. Como ellos, nosotros
algunas veces deambulamos en el sufrimiento en

Today we are at the midpoint of Lent, celebrating Laetare and the example of our faith be a source of strength
for them in this conversion process and as they conSunday. Let us pray for our catechumens and rejoice with
them. May our prayers tinue to grow in faith and in love
with the God who calls them to the waters of baptism.

todos los días, en las buenas y en las malas, trayendo el
bien de lo malo, reforzando la fe, ayudándonos a ver como El ve. ¿Qué gracias necesito para mirar la voluntad de
Dios más claramente? ¿Qué está bloqueando mi visión?
Estamos ya a la mitad de la Cuaresma, celebrando el
“Domingo Laetare”. Oremos por nuestros catecúmenos y
alegrémonos con ellos. Que nuestras oraciones y ejemplo
de nuestra fe sean una fuente de fuerza para ellos en este
proceso de conversión mientras continúan creciendo en fe
y amor con el Dios que los llama a las aguas del bautismo.

CRS Rice Bowls story: Honduras
Mayra is 11 years old. She didn’t always like school. She was
shy and didn’t always understand her math and reading lessons
- or do her homework.
Her teacher noticed and invited Mayra to join a CRS-sponsored
tutoring program. There, she could work with her classmate,
Fabricio, to get a little extra help. Together, they practiced
reading by writing stories. They made up games to practice
math. And when they were done, they jumped rope and played
in the neighborhood. They became good friends.
Now Mayra is proud of her reading and math skills. She does
her homework, comes to class on time and has new friends.
One day, she wants to be a teacher. But first she would like to
tutor so she can help her classmates - like Fabricio helped her.

Scripture: As he went along, he saw a man blind
All students registering for English Catechism need to have their

sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born
blind?" "Neither this man nor his parents sinned,"
said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of
God might be displayed in his life. John 9:1-3
One day Jesus was walking with his disciples when they
passed by a blind man. When they saw him, the disciples asked
Jesus who was to blame for the man's blindness.
Was it because of his sin or was it because of his parent's
sins?
Jesus answered them and told them that no one was to blame,
he was blind so that God's works could be shown in him.
Then Jesus healed the man and the people praised and glorified God for his goodness.
Dear Lord, the difficulties in our life seem small when
compared to what others may be facing.
Help us not to grumble and complain, but to praise and glorify you in every situation. Amen.
"Let the children come to Me for such is the kingdom of
heaven."

UN DOMINGO PARA ALEGRARSE
Pocas parábolas del Evangelio son tan queridas por el pueblo cristiano como la del hijo pródigo. Nos podemos identificar con todos sus personajes, y con las emociones que se entrecruzan entre ellos. El dolor del padre por la avaricia y desconsideración de su hijo se convierte en alegría al verlo regresar. El dolor del hijo por haber perdido todo lo que tenía –dinero,
familia, amigos– se convierte en alegría delirante al ver como su padre lo recibe.
Pero también comprendemos el desconcierto del hijo mayor ante la generosidad de su padre. Para el hijo mayor, la
virtud no es su propia recompensa. Ha trabajado duro, y ha sido un hijo leal, pero eso no se celebra con fiestas ni banquetes. Pero su padre es un padre pródigo, y prodiga su perdón y su misericordia. Y espera que su hijo mayor tenga esa misma generosidad. Quiere que todos se regocijen porque el que estaba perdido ha sido hallado.
Este es un domingo para alegrarse. Es día de hacer una pausa, y de considerarnos y alentarnos unos a otros. Porque
todos somos hijos pródigos, en el camino de regreso al hogar de nuestro padre. Y debemos también ser hermanos mayores, pero hermanos mayores que esperan junto con el padre ansioso, mientras vislumbra el horizonte. En Cristo Jesús
nos vemos reconciliados, con Dios Padre, y con nuestros hermanos. En su Muerte y Resurrección hemos pasado de la
muerte a la vida. Somos una nueva creación. Y esto nos llena de alegría.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Cuaresma es tiempo de reconciliación por medio del
perdón. En este espíritu, el Papa san Juan Pablo II pidió
perdón por pecados cometidos por la Iglesia. Uno de estos pecados es la manera como América fue cristianizada.
La relación del latino con la religión católica ha sido
entre buenas intenciones y antagonismos. Gracias a Dios,
¡somos cristianos! Lamentablemente, nuestro bautizo, en
la mayor parte de los casos, fue en agua bendita y sangre
indígena a la vez, ya que América fue evangelizada con
cruz y espada. Los pobres misioneros que con fatiga, predicaron en nuestras tierras venían acompañados por hombres poderosos en busca de riquezas.
El filósofo romano-español Séneca (siglo I) afirmaba: "la religión es algo que para la persona común es verdad, para el sabio es falso y para el poderoso es útil". A
su vez, el romano-judío Pablo de Tarso declara que en
Cristo, Dios ha revelado que la persona común y necia
derribará la falsedad de los sabios (1 Cor 1:18-31).
El latino creyente reconoce que su fe nació del dolor
de la conquista y no niega los abusos clericales, pero
confía en el Evangelio reconciliador.

Historia de CRS Plato de Arroz : Honduras
Mayra es una niña de 11 años, a ella no siempre le
gusto la escuela. Era tímida y no siempre entendía la
lectura ni matemáticas o su tarea.
Su maestra noto esto e invito a Mayra a que participara en el programa de tutoria patrocinado por CRS.
Ahi podria trabajar con su compañero Fabricio, para
obtener ayuda extra. Juntos practicaron la lectura
escribiendo historias. Inventaron juegos para practicar matemáticas. Al terminar jugaban con la cuerda y en el vecindario. Se hicieron muy buenos amigos. Ahora Mayra esta muy orgullosa de sus habilidades con la lectura y matematicas. Hace su
tarea, llega a clases a tiempo y tiene amigos. Algún
dia quiere llegar a hacer maestra. Pero primero le
gustaria ofrecer ayuda de tutoria para ayudar a sus
compañeros, como Fabricio la ayudo a ella. Su
donación para el Plato de Arroz ayuda a gente como
Mayra.
El lunes, 7 de marzo, traeremos al Alcalde Sam
Liccardo y los Concejales Magdalena Carrasco y
Raúl Peralez a la Escuela Secundaria Overfelt para
pedir su compromiso para proteger a los inquilinos en San José. ¡Su presencia es una muestra a
nuestros electos líderes de la urgencia de esta crisis!
