NACAC NEWSLETTER Bulletin September 2010 • Volume 3 • Edition 3 Boletin septimbre 2010 • Volumen 3 • Edicion 3 HARRIGAN REPEATS AT CAC GAMES By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway British Virgin Islands sprinter Tahesia Harrigan created history for her country on the opening day of track and field at the XXI CAC Games when she became the first woman from her country to earn a repeat gold medal a these Games. Since women began competing at the CAC Games in 1938 only two others have managed this feat, the last being Cuba's Lilianna Allen in 1990 and 1993. Interestingly, another Cuban athlete Miguelina Colon won the 100M at the Games three times, in 1962, '66 and '70. Harrigan, had earlier in the day sent a message to her opponents of her readiness to defend when she posted 11.11 seconds on the board that was aided by a +2.3 meters per second wind over the allowable 2.0 she followed up with 11.19 for the runaway victory by .28 secondsslightly less than her win four years ago In that same event Trinidad and Tobago's Ayana Hutchinson was second in 11.47, while Colombia's Yomara Hinestroza used a personal best of 11.51, to deny host Puerto Rico's Carol Rodriguez a podium finish by .04 seconds in 11.55. U.S. Virgin Islands Courtney Patterson was fifth in 11.59 after running 11.55 in the prelims. “It's a great feeling having both victories under my belt,” Harrigan who was looking for a faster time said. “Towards the end of the race I felt a bit of deceleration as opposed to the first round. I don't know if I took it out a little harder in the first part of the race but otherwise it was a good race.” “I didn't know that I was the only the third female in history to repeat, but what I do know, is it's a great feeling and a great competition,” Harrigan stated. “The next CAC Games is a long stretch but I might have to try and see if I do it three times in a row.” Harrigan's medal was the BVI's third successive gold medal at the championships in which the country has been participating since 1982. Dion Crabbe picked up the men's 100 meters gold in El Salvador in 2002 and Harrigan followed up with the first female medal four years ago in Cartagena, Colombia. BVI's Tahesia Harrigan -- the first English-speaking athlete to win successive CAC Games 100m meter titles displays her killer smile and 2010 CAC gold medal. Tahesia has the distinction of being only 0one of three to win back-to-back gold medals since women began competing in 1938 and is the first since 1993 to accomplish this feat. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE/ MENSAJE DEL PRESIDENTE Dea r Collea gue s E st imados colega s: Colleagues, some member federation countries have recently been bothered by Hurricane Earl and on your behalf I express our sincere hope that normalcy will be returned to the affected countries. I sincerely hope that there has not been too much damage to the facilities of any of the affected areas. Friends, we are technically at the end of another season and I think we have much to be proud of. While there have been very good performances at all of our regional competitions, I am sure we are particularly pleased with our athletes' performances at two new events -- the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and the Continental Cup in Split, Croatia. To all countries that hosted a major regional competition, please accept my sincere thanks, but I must give special thanks to our leaders in Anguilla, who successfully hosted the Leeward Islands Youth Championships, and the British Virgin Islands for a successful Caribbean Union of Teachers competition. In all of this, the development of our young athletes throughout the region is there for all to see and I plead with our leaders to give young athletes every possible opportunity to participate in regional events because they represent the future of our region. As of today, we have not confirmed venues for Carifta 2011 and the CAC Senior Championships 2011, but hopefully by the end of September both venues will be decided on. Let us not sit back and erroneously believe that those events will not take place they will. We are all happy to know that the CADICA Senior Championships, which was postponed due to the earthquake earlier in the year, will in fact take place on September 16-18 in Guatemala. Colleagues, we do not have much time to relax, coming off a very long season, but let me wish all the best for those athletes who will participate in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India in October. 3 TYNIA GAITHER WINS SILVER IN SINGAPORE GANÓ TYNIA GAITHER EN SINGAPUR From Alpheus Finlayson Bahamian 200m runner Tynia Gaither of Freeport Grand Bahama, won the Silver medal at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore, making history for the Bahamas. They are all a part of the Bahamas' Triple Jump farm. Now Peter Pratt is training the Bahamas' latest finds - the Collie-Minns twins Lathone and Lathario -- for regional and world success. This year Lathario participated in the IAAF World Junior Championships and Lathone won the “B” final at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Lathario has a PB of 15.78m and Lathone a PB of 15.20m. Twin Lathario Collie-Minns continuing the family tradition Los gemelos Collie-Minns siguen con la tradición familiar The twins got interested in the Triple Jump in 2007. They were members of Club Monica Athletics participating in the hurdles when coach Diane Woodside suggested that they should try the Triple Jump. Their first foray into the event was at the BATAF Meet in Tampa, and they earned their first success. Their breakthrough, however, came in 2008 when Lathone won the Silver medal in the Carifta Games in St. Lucia with a jump of 14 14.58m and Lathario won Bronze with a 14.48m performance. This year the twins made another breakthrough when Lathone jumped 15.19m at the Roadrunners Meet and Lathario passed the 15m barrier with a 15.19m at the Carifta Trials. At the Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands Lathone won Gold with a 14.86m performance and Lathario 14.78m for the Silver medal. They missed the Carifta Record of 15.03m achieved by Lyndon Sands at the 1980 Carifta Games. Based on Lathone's performance he was selected to represent the Americas in the Youth Olympics. At the Hywell Jones Jr. National Jr. Track and Field Championships in June, Lathone jumped 15.02m and Lathario 14.98m. By the time the BTC National Open Track and Field Championships came around two weeks later Lathario made another breakthrough, jumping a PB of 15.78m, a World Junior qualifying performance. Goulet adds, “Recognizing the specifics of these two events, we are especially pleased in delivering on our commitment to our marathoners and race walkers by communicating the qualifying information almost two years out of the 2012 Olympic Games. “ The qualifying period for the World Championships began January 1, 2010 and will conclude o May 29, 2011. The Olympic Games qualifying window opened as of September 1, 2010 and will close April 15, 2012. Should the IAAF adjust these dates, Athletics Canada will adjust its criteria accordingly. Athletics Canada directly applies IAAF standards for most events, however in the spirit of consistency, has chosen to set its own standards for both the marathon and 50km racewalk. These adjustments are aligned with the organization’s current carding criteria. It is important to note that there will be no selection trials for these events; rather selection will be made based on rankings within the qualifying periods. Athletics is attempting, with partners, to support competitive opportunities for top athletes in both of these endurance events. The final selection criteria for both the World Championships and Olympic Games will include a Rising Star criteria which would be discovered through performances in shorter events such as the 20km racewalk and the 10 000 metres. The bar has been raised and our athletes have responded in kind. The new standards and level of expectation now placed on our athletes makes this team one of the most difficult to make in the world. I think for this reason we are set up very well going into our world championships and leading into 2012.” All athletics events will be staged at QEII Stadium.
