FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK...
January 19, 2014
Dear St. Andrew Parishioners,
As many of you already know, St. Andrew Parish has long been struggling with a safety issue that has become more dangerous in the past year or two. This issue centers on the area
to the immediate west of the front entrance of our church on Chestnut Street where, between archways and columns and steps to the rear door of our candle shop, is enough
space to serve as grounds for the homeless to camp overnight and well into the morning
hours, hours indeed when our St. Andrew School children are being dropped off for
school.
As you can imagine, this has been a difficult issue for our faith community, what with our
bedrock mission of reaching out to the poor and needy. Nevertheless, the overriding reality
is that our young students and their parents, along with myself and school staff, believe
that this space across the street from St. Andrew School has become a threat to the well
being of the children attending school here.
As a consequence, this issue was brought to the Parish Pastoral Council at our last meeting
in November 2013, when we decided to seek Pasadena City approval to enclose the area in
question with gates that match those in front of our church and on the Chestnut Street entrance to the church.
The Council also unanimously agreed that our parish should not only continue to address
the very issue of homelessness in our community but also become pro-active in developing
new ways that our faith community can assist them, in addition to the countless services
that our St. Vincent de Paul Society Ministry continues to provide them.
As we await City approval for this project, which by the way will only take a day or two to
complete, we will be reaching out to City officials and others in an attempt to assist the
homeless among us.
I will keep you posted on this issue as we go forward together as a parish united in our mission to
serve the most needy in our midst.

the parish survey this past Fall. We received hundreds of responses, and we are going over them thoroughly. We will make
results of the survey available in the Spring, as part of our ongoing work to develop a Parish Mission Statement that conveys
what St. Andrew Church is about and how we engage each
other and our community.

Como muchos de ustedes ya saben, la parroquia de San Andrés durante mucho tiempo ha estado luchando el problema de seguridad que se ha vuelto
más peligroso en los dos últimos años . Este tema se centra en la zona situada al oeste de la entrada principal de la iglesia en la calle Chestnut, donde,
entre arcos, columnas y escaleras, la puerta trasera de nuestra tienda de veladoras, hay espacio suficiente para servir de base para las personas sin hogar y
que usan durante la noche para dormir y se quedan hasta la madrugada, hora
en efecto cuando los niños de la escuela de San Andrés llegan para comenzar
su día de clases.
Como se pueden imaginar, esto ha sido un tema difícil para nuestra comunidad de fe, con nuestra misión de llegar a los pobres y necesitados. Sin embargo, la realidad fundamental es que nuestros jóvenes estudiantes y sus padres, al igual con el personal de la escuela, creen que este espacio de la calle
de la escuela de San Andrés se ha convertido en una amenaza para el bienestar de los niños que asisten a la escuela.
Como consecuencia , este tema fue llevado al Concilio Pastoral en nuestra
última reunión en noviembre del 2013, cuando nos decidimos a buscar la
aprobación de la Ciudad de Pasadena para encerrar el área en cuestión, con
puertas que coinciden con las de delante de nuestra iglesia y las de la calle
Chestnut.
Asimismo, el Concilio acordó, por unanimidad, que nuestra parroquia no
sólo debe continuar abordando el tema de la falta de vivienda en nuestra comunidad, sino también encontrar formas nuevas de desarrollar en nuestra
comunidad de fe y de poder ayudarles, además de los innumerables servicios
que el Ministerio de San Vicente de Paúl continúa prestándoles.
A la espera de la aprobación de la ciudad para este proyecto, que por cierto
sólo le llevará un día o dos para terminar, vamos a tener una junta con los
funcionarios de la ciudad y otras agencias, en un intento de ayudar a las personas sin hogar.
Yo los mantendré informados sobre este tema a medida que avanzamos juntos como una parroquia unida en nuestra misión de servir a los más necesitados en medio de nosotros.
