FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT
DECEMBER 1, 2013
“You…must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” Matthew 24:44
PASTOR’S REFLECTION —
Advent is a wonderful time in our Church’s year. Most
people think of Advent only in relation to Christmas. In
fact, most people simply forget about Advent and go right
into the Christmas spirit through songs, decorations,
shopping, and parties. The Christmas decorations
around town are up and lit even before Thanksgiving – in
many people’s minds an experience Advent does not
exist.
That’s unfortunate, because Advent is such a rich time
of reflection and anticipation. Maybe that’s why it’s so
“unpopular.” We don’t like waiting. We don’t like anticipating. We want to get to the celebrating without all the
waiting. But, Advent offers us one of the most precious
gifts of all - TIME!
The root meaning of the word Advent is “beginning.”
Our Advent in the Christian sense is meant to help us
begin our time of preparation not just for Christmas, but
for our eternity. Our whole lives are an “Advent,” you
might say. So, Advent is a time of waiting and looking
forward to that day when Jesus will return to bring a
“new heaven and a new earth.”
As we begin Advent, let’s use this time wisely; filled with
wonder and anticipation for the coming of Christ – not
only at Christmas, but as our eternal Savior and Lord.
What a party that will be!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
The Catholic Daughters of America would like to
thank everyone who attended the Harvest Tea Luncheon. It was a great success!
The Women’s Guild would like to thank all the vendors
who participated in the Holiday Craft and Boutique at
St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Everyone had a wonderful time!
There were many people from the community who took
advantage of this opportunity to shop early for unique
Christmas gifts! Thank you again for coming! The monies we raised is going to sponsor a several families for
Christmas this year!

The Heart of Advent
Marking the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year, the
four weeks of Advent lead us to the celebration of Christmas. With a character all their own, the weeks of Advent
stir in us a readiness to receive our Savior while sharpening our sense of the world’s need for redemption. Originally a season of penance in preparation for baptisms on
Epiphany, Advent, by the 10th century, was also a time
of joyful anticipation of the Lord’s coming. Advent focuses
on more than one aspect of time: we remember the past,
celebrate the present, and look forward to Christ’s presence. The seriousness of the season as it looks toward
the Second Coming of Jesus and the Final Judgment is
balanced by the joyful anticipation of a Savior who will
make everything right in a world that is so obviously out of
joint. Advent reminds us that we must watch and wait
for the Lord - watch for signs of grace in our lives and
wait for the revelation of God in our lives. The hustle
and bustle of shopping, party preparation, and gift exchanges need not obscure the real source of our joy.
At the center of Advent, uniting all these different and
sometimes opposing aspects, is our longing for a Savior,
for One who came to redeem us, who comes in our
hearts, and who will arrive at the end of the ages.

Marriages are arranged at least six months in advance. The bride
and/or bridegroom should be registered members of The Catholic
Church of Visalia (St. Mary’s , Holy Family, St. Thomas the Apostle or St. Charles Borromeo).
Either the bride or bridegroom must call the Parish Office at 734-9522 to
make an appointment to meet with one of the priests to make arrangements. No date may be set for a wedding, until the couple has met
with the priest/Deacon.
MARRIAGE VALIDATION
Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church before a Catholic Ordained Minister (Deacon/Priest) and two witnesses. In these hectic times
in which we live, many couples, for reasons known only to them, fail to
get married in the Catholic Church.
What can they do about it?
They may have their marriage validated (sometimes called blessed) in the
Catholic Church! Please call the Parish Office at 734-9522, to make an
appointment to see a priest. The marriage can be validated (blessed) in a
simple, private ceremony in the Catholic Church (the six-month waiting period
would usually not apply to marriage validations). If you have had a prior
marriage, the process may be somewhat longer, but we will be happy to
assist you through it.

REFLEXIÓN-CÓMO PREPARARSE
CANEL 49 KNXT CARACTEISTICAS
Debemos estar listos. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
