EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
March 2, 2014
Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child in her womb?
Even should she forget, I will never forget you! - Isaiah 49:15
REFLECTION
GOD IS A LOVING PARENT
Some scripture passages require a good deal of
study before they yield their inner meaning. Not so
with today’s Gospel, a continuation of the Sermon
on the Mount. Here we have Jesus’ well-known
sayings about God’s care for us. “No one can
serve two masters” and “Look at the birds in the
sky” have become idioms in our culture. Perhaps
they have become too familiar. Jesus’ point is a
simple one—if we keep our hearts set on the important things, God will take care of the rest. His
use of simple images from nature—birds, flowers,
grass—would have resonated just as deeply with
his listeners then as they do today.
The brief passage from Isaiah, situated as it is in a
longer section on the restoration of Zion, uses a
wonderful image to portray God’s care for us.
Even more than a mother’s care for her own child
is God’s attentiveness to our needs. Just as with
the Gospel reading, an image of God as parent
surfaces. No wonder St. Paul in his letter to the
Corinthians is more confident in the judgment of
the Lord than in any human assessment! For
those whose hearts are set on God’s priorities, the
time of judgment can bring nothing but good.

Lent Begins This Coming Wednesday/La Cuaresma Comienza El Miércoles
March 5th is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the Lenten season. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation, as are four
other specially designated feast days during the liturgical year. However, it has always been a praiseworthy practice to begin our
personal and communal observance of Lent by coming to Mass, receiving the Eucharist, receiving the blessed ashes, and dedicating to the Lord in a special way the first of all forty days of preparation for Easter. Take note of our parish’s schedule of
Masses / Services on Wednesday:

UPCOMING AND ONGOING EVENTS
UNIVERSAL LENTEN PRACTICES
Fasting from food / abstaining from meat
The Church calls upon its members to put
ourselves in union with the suffering
Christ by sharing certain types of personal
sacrifice. Because Friday is considered the
day of Jesus suffering and death, the Church has always
urged all Catholics to sacrifice in some way on Fridays
in honor of the Passion and Death of Jesus.
Abstinence
The Church has never abandoned the obligation to abstain from meat on certain days. The obligation to abstain
from meat binds Catholics on Ash Wednesday and on
each of the Fridays during Lent. Those who have
reached 14 years of age are asked to observe this practice. The obligation stays with us all our lifetime; there is
no automatic “expiring” age at which we are no longer
obliged to abstain from meat.
Fasting
The obligation to fast binds all Catholics only on two
days, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The “law of
fasting” is quite different.
It allows for one full meal a day. The law does not forbid
the taking of food at the other two meals, but it ordinarily
offers as a norm, that the other two meals should only
equal the main meal in quantity. More importantly, eating
food and snacks between meals is not permitted. (That’s
probably the hardest part of the practice of fasting!) The
main meal of the day may be taken at whatever time a
person chooses. This law binds everyone from eighteen to
fifty-nine, i.e. the beginning of their sixtieth year.
The Church urges it’s members, young and old, to place
themselves in union with the Passion and Death of Jesus
by performing some type of voluntary sacrifice during the
season of Lent. It would be a good idea to mark your calendars for the two days of obligatory “fasting,” and Ash
Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent for “abstaining
from the eating of any meat.”
“Giving up things” for Lent will always be a respected and
honorable practice for all us Catholics; there is nothing
“old fashioned” about this practice. At the same time, we
try to improve our prayer life and more good and positive
practices. Consider giving up something dear to you and
your family, i.e., refined sugar, all desserts, candy (or
certain kinds of candy), soft drinks, beer, wine, hard liquor, cellphone, tablets, IPhone, cable or television on
certain nights, renting movies, movie theatre,... the list
goes on and on.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
We welcome all parent (s) of The Catholic Church of Visalia to stop by
the Parish Office to inquire about having their child baptized. The Baptismal pamphlet answers questions regarding what the guidelines and
requirements are at TCCOV. Inquires and arrangements must be made
by the parent. Baptism dates are assigned in English and in Spanish and
are scheduled after all the requirements have been fulfilled.
Children over the age of 5 must be enrolled in the Religious Education Program and
a letter from the Coordinator must be submitted prior to making arrangements for the
baptism.
Requirements:
Register for an Orientation Session-/$10.00 material fee.
Parents must provide copy of child’s birth certificate
Godparent(s) must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation and provide a copy of the Confirmation Certificate.
If Godparent(s) is/are married, they must provide a copy of the marriage
certificate showing they are married in the Catholic Church.
After all documents are received, Parents and Godparent(s) must attend a
Baptismal Preparation Class.
Upon completion of the above requirements, a date and time for the
baptism will be scheduled with the Baptismal Coordinator.
SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Marriages are arranged at least six months in advance. The bride
and/or bridegroom should be registered members of The Catholic
Church of Visalia (St. Mary’s , Holy Family, St. Thomas the Apostle or St. Charles Borromeo).
Either the bride or bridegroom must call the Parish Office at 734-9522 to
make an appointment to meet with one of the priests to make arrangements. No date may be set for a wedding, until the couple has met
with the priest/Deacon.
MARRIAGE VALIDATION
Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church before a Catholic Ordained Minister (Deacon/Priest) and two witnesses. In these hectic times
in which we live, many couples, for reasons known only to them, fail to
get married in the Catholic Church.
What can they do about it?
They may have their marriage validated (sometimes called blessed) in the
Catholic Church! Please call the Parish Office at 734-9522, to make an
appointment to see a priest. The marriage can be validated (blessed) in a
simple, private ceremony in the Catholic Church (the six-month waiting period
would usually not apply to marriage validations). If you have had a prior
marriage, the process may be somewhat longer, but we will be happy to
assist you through it.
QUINCEAÑERAS
The young lady must have been registered and attending TCCOV Religious
Education Program for at least **two years prior to the date requested for the
Quinceañera. (**Registered and in the Religious Education Middle School Program and
registered in the TCCOV High School Confirmation Program)
Arrangements must be made at least six months in advance. The parents must
be registered, practicing members of TCCOV. Parents must call the Parish
Office at 734-9522 to make an appointment to meet with a Deacon. Please
note: all Quinceañera are take place at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. NO
DATE may be set for the Quinceañera until the parents and young lady have
met with the Deacon.

C opyright © J. S.
