THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NOVEMBER 3, 2013
The LORD lifts up all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down.
PASTOR’S REFLECTION —
The picture we get from the Gospels is that Zaccheus
was a very wealthy man. He was not just any tax
collector – he was a “chief” tax collector on the one
hand and a tax collector in the wealthy city of Jericho
on the other. So, the stage is set for a classic meeting between Zaccheus and Jesus.
The encounter between Jesus and Zaccheus isn’t
what everyone expected. Once again, the religious
leaders are watching Jesus to judge his motives and
his actions. And once again they are shocked! Jesus
completely changes the scene by his compassion
and love.
Everyone (even ourselves as we read the story) expected Jesus to give Zaccheus a piece of his mind
and condemn Zaccheus for his sinfulness and illgotten wealth; but what we get is a lesson in humility
and compassion; humility from Zaccheus in recognizing his wrong, and compassion from Jesus in granting
salvation. Keep in mind that this encounter will be
repeated later with another thief – as Jesus was dying
on the cross, he said to him: “Amen, I say to you,
today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
Forgiveness, healing, and life come from God, Jesus
teaches us. Zaccheus shows us that even with the
many riches we have, or the power of money, or the
influence it brings, we cannot “buy” salvation. Salvation (and the eternal happiness it brings) comes from
faith in Jesus, and living his Way: sharing our wealth,
care for the poor, living honest lives and more. In this
way, the assurance of Jesus can be ours, too. “…
Jesus looked up and said to him (and us,) … today I
must stay at your house…Today salvation has come
to this house…”
The mercy of God is greater than any sin. Zaccheus
went searching for Christ. Christ found Zaccheus.
May Christ find us, too, and come “to stay with us and
bring us Salvation.”
Psalm 145:14
Second Collection Next Weekend….
The second collection next weekend is for the
ANUGRAHA HOME in India. Fr. Thomas Thippabathini
established the ANUGRAHA HOME in India to provide
a home for the orphans and the poorest of poor children
that live in the villages that the Catholic parishes serve.
When Fr. Thomas was pastor he traveled to the different villages and learned first hand the needs of the orphans and families. He wanted to do more! So over a
period of time and through the generosity of a few
friends, land was donated and the ANUGRAHA HOME
was built. He, his family, and a few other friends constructed a simple home with a few rooms so the underprivileged children could have a safe place to live and
be educated.
ANUGRAHA means a gift or grace mostly related to
Mother Mary (Hail Mary, Full of Grace!). The number of
children who are in need grows every year, but Fr.
Thomas’ resources are very limited. Your generous
donation will help keep the doors of the ANUGRAHA
HOME open for these children. To learn more about the
work that Fr. Thomas and others are doing please visit:

and are scheduled after all the requirements have been fulfilled.

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Marriages are arranged at least six months in advance. The bride
and/or bridegroom should be registered members of The Catholic
Church of Visalia (St. Mary’s , Holy Family, St. Thomas the Apostle or St. Charles Borromeo).
Either the bride or bridegroom must call the Parish Office at 734-9522 to
make an appointment to meet with one of the priests to make arrangements. No date may be set for a wedding, until the couple has met
with the priest/Deacon.
MARRIAGE VALIDATION
Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church before a Catholic Ordained Minister (Deacon/Priest) and two witnesses. In these hectic times
in which we live, many couples, for reasons known only to them, fail to
get married in the Catholic Church.
What can they do about it?
They may have their marriage validated (sometimes called blessed) in the
Catholic Church! Please call the Parish Office at 734-9522, to make an
appointment to see a priest. The marriage can be validated (blessed) in a
simple, private ceremony in the Catholic Church (the six-month waiting period
would usually not apply to marriage validations). If you have had a prior
marriage, the process may be somewhat longer, but we will be happy to
assist you through it.

Education Program for at least **two years prior to the date requested for the

pecado. Zaqueo fue en busca de Cristo. Cristo encontró a Zaqueo.

encomendamos a él.
—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
