They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “He was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We, too, sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). RADIATING STRENGTH When my youngest sister, Joanne, who had suffered for many years with multiple sclerosis, lay dying in her hospital bed, we members of her family gathered around her for her final days. We watched as any remaining strength left in her fragile body was slowly released. Joanne, like Saint Paul, had been given a “thorn in the flesh,” a thorn that gradually robbed her of the ability to walk, sing, speak, and care for her young son. Yet each time I visited her over the final years of her life, I detected an inner strength that amazed me. Like Saint Paul, in her physical weakness she was still strong. And that strength radiated from her, even in her dying days, giving all of us the fortitude to grow even stronger as a loving family. STRENGTH FROM THE LOVE OF GOD Society tries to dictate what strength is. Strength is being “number one.” Strength is making the most money, having the most powerful position in a company, being the quarterback, and climbing the social ladder. Today we hear scripture stories of three people who exhibited a different kind of strength. Ezekiel, Paul, and the Lord Jesus were not people who found strength in the material things of life. And they were not “weaklings” by any stretch of the imagination. They were people who, despite the obstacles, held fast to their conviction that the love of God would give them the strength, even in times of weakness, to minister to those entrusted to their care. What wonderful examples we have in these three men. As Saint Paul said, “I will rather boast most gladly of my weaknesses, in order that the power of Christ may dwell with me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we are feeling that life presents us with too many obstacles, let us remember that even in weakness we can radiate a strength to others that comes from the grace of a God who loves us more and more with each passing day. Welcome Fr. Vlad Echalas! TCCOV is happy to welcome Fr. Vlad who will supply in the parish from July 9 through Aug. 10. (Many of you know Fr. Vlad from his visits during Simbang Gabi.) Fr. Vlad will be with us to celebrate Mass, hear confessions and help as needed while some of our TCCOV priests take summer vacations. Thank you Fr. Vlad, we are happy to have you in Visalia again! CHANGE TO DAILY MASS SCHEDULE COMING… Beginning August 1, the daily Mass on Saturday will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. on the 1st Saturday of the month only. The daily morning Mass on Fridays will continue to be celebrated at 7:00 a.m. each week - it will no longer be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. during the school year as our GMC students will now join the larger parish community for the celebration of Mass on Fridays at 12:15 p.m. as their schedule allows rather than at another designated time. We look forward to gathering with our GMC students in praise and thanksgiving through the sacrifice of the Holy Mass. CHANGE TO CONFESSION SCHEDULE COMING... In order to accommodate the larger parish community and to continue to promote that TCCOV is one parish, beginning August 1st, confessions will be heard on Saturdays in St. Mary’s Church, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Five priests will usually be available each Saturday. The confessionals in St. Mary’s are better suited to offering the sacrament and to accommodating multiple confessors. Construction will begin shortly to remodel the grotto area in St. Mary’s so that a 4th confessional may be restored and an area will be determined to accommodate the 5th confessor. The votive candles will be relocated to the Marian altar along with the Marian devotionals that are currently in the grotto. We believe that this change will allow more parishioners the occasion to avail themselves of the opportunity to receive the sacrament of confession. St. Mary’s Tabernacle You may notice that the tabernacle will absent from St. Mary’s Church for about the next eight weeks. This is due to the work of a generous donor who has offered to have the tabernacle refinished. We look forward to the beautiful results upon its return. Ochoa Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno The Violent Deaths at Emanuel AME Church Charleston, South Carolina Supreme Court Ruling on Marriage Disappointed in the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage, Bishop Armando Ochoa stated, “We do not have to like; we do not have to embrace it; however, we do have to live with it and respond as people of faith.” The Church will continue to recognize the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony as the consecrated union of man and woman and to support families in every way possible, that they may grow in loving relationship which directly impacts all of society. Redefining marriage in the law is gravely unjust and affects everyone; especially, the children. The Church does not see its protection of Matrimony as discrimination against those who have a same sex attraction. As Christians, we recognize the dignity of all and embrace our responsibility to love others as Christ has loved us. Bishop Ochoa calls the faithful to prayer and a deeper commitment to supporting family life in their parish communities; especially those families who are struggling. MARRIAGE & FAMILY LIFE, CONT’D NEW TRENDS UNDERSCORE NEED TO STRENGTHEN FAMILY STABILITY Marriage is in decline in America, but recent studies have highlighted the latest trends that will help religious and civic institutions find new paths to strengthen marriage, the pillar of family life. Between 1970 and 2009, the annual number of marriages per 1,000 unmarried adult women in the United States declined by more than 50 percent, according to the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia. The American divorce rate is nearly twice that of 1960, with nearly half of marriages now ending in divorce. The sequence of love, marriage and then having children is also vanishing. Nationally, 40.7 percent of births were to unmarried mothers in 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In California, 40 percent of babies born in 2012 -- 202,026 children -- were to unmarried mothers, according to a Kids Count analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. “Socio-cultural realities” often “end in crushing families,” the final report of the Synod of Bishops on “Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization,” held in Rome last October, stated. But new research will help religious, civic and public policy organizations develop targeted solu- As Bishop of Diocese of Fresno, I wish to express on behalf of the entire Catholic Community, our sincere sorrow to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the vicious, cowardly attack at Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. To the members of the faith community of Emanuel AME Church we pledge our prayerful support during this very sad and difficult time. Violence is not an answer or response to conflict or disagreements among us. We live in a “blessed” country comprised of rich cultural and ethnic diversity. It is the richness that makes our country so unique and so remarkable in the world. But when violence becomes a “normal” consequence of our diversity, when hatred and suspicion invade our national discourse and behavior, then we are in danger of losing the “soul” of who we are and who we are meant to be. Faith guides us to see with the eyes, heart and the wisdom of God. As we reflect on the horrible acts of violence around us, let us allow God’s Holy Spirit guide us toward peace and reconciliation which lead us to a deeper resolve to bring about true change through the conversion of our hearts. tions. A report by the Brookings Institute, The Marginalization of Marriage in Middle America, authored by family scholars W. Bradford Wilcox and Andrew J. Cherlin, examined marriage trends as they relate to family income, age and education. Wilcox, who spoke to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in June 2014, described a “disconnect” from marriage in poorer communities and a growing “marriage divide” in this nation, primarily by economic status and education. The study found that: • The rise of non-marital births, which started in low-income communities in the 1960s and 1970s, has now reached the working middle class. More and more young adults with less education in working-class neighborhoods are “having children in brittle cohabiting unions,” and those who do marry are at a high risk of divorce. • In affluent neighborhoods where many college-educated Americans live, “marriage is alive and well and stable families are the rule.” Nearly all young Americans with college degrees, although they may cohabit with their partners, marry before having their first child. The divorce rate in this group has declined to levels not seen since the early 1970s. • Among moderately-educated Americans – those who have completed high school but not college—marriage has declined. This group constitutes 51 percent of the young adult population, aged 25-34. Moderately educated middle-class young adults are dramatically more likely than highly educated Americans to have children outside of marriage. They are more than twice as likely to divorce as college-educated Americans during the first ten years of marriage, and the divorce divide between these two groups has been growing since the 1970s. The study also examined the causes for these trends, including the decline of reasonably-paying jobs over the past few decades. Young men with only a high-school education are especially prone to earn lower wages and work in temporary or part -time jobs. Cultural changes are also a powerful factor. These include: (1) new norms about sexual activity, births and marriage; (2) decline in religious participation; and (3) laws, such as “no-fault” divorces laws, that uphold individual rights rather than the institution of marriage. From the 1970s to the present, for example, the share of moderately-educated Americans attending church about once a week or more fell 12 percentage points, from 40 to 28 percent. For the college educated, it fell four percentage points, from 38 to 34 percent. The study offers some recommendations on jobs and tax policy and a social marketing campaign “to encourage young adults to follow a success sequence characterized by finishing high school, getting a job, getting married, and then having children.” Strategies on how to address the special challenges to stable married life, as a vocation and the bedrock of society, will be further examined at the Oct. 2015 Vatican summit on the family. News TCCOV addresses counseling & mental health issues through parish resources and the Bethlehem Center In our amazingly communicative world today, it is hard to realize that many couples and families experience crisis in their marriage and family life due to an inability to communicate or to communicate in a positive way. Any family can experience issues and face difficulties that seem beyond their control or that develop through a lack of understanding that there is a problem. Some develop because of mental health issues that are not easily or readily recognized or addiction or other social issues that may be easily and readily recognized but not easily and readily dealt with. Many couples and families need the help of a professional counselor or therapist to assist them in recognizing the issues they face and offering constructive ways in dealing with them with a minimum of disruption in their lives and the most advantageous direction to begin the process of healing and restructuring their marriage and family life so that they can become a cohesive unit. Our priests receive many requests for marriage and family counseling, through the office, in the confessional, at Mass or parish functions. The reality is that the priests are not counselors; they may listen to you but cannot really advise people on how to address family or marriage issues. People need a professional person who is trained in this area to help them move forward and work through their crisis. For some, professional counseling may be financially out of reach due to a variety of circumstances. Through TCCOV, we would like to develop a comprehensive list of marriage and family counselors who would be willing to assist those in need of professional services and who could offer services on a sliding scale or pro bono, as the circumstances dictate. This resource would allow the parish to respond in a timely manner so that those in need could address their issues directly with a professional who is in a much better position to assist them in working through a difficult period in their life. Professional counselors or therapists who would be willing to take on this role are asked to give a call to the church office, 734-9522, and leave your name and phone number. The clergy would have an initial meeting with those INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM First Step in Becoming Catholic Are you unbaptized, and considering being baptized in the Catholic faith? Have you already been baptized in another church and are now considering becoming a Catholic? Are you a baptized Catholic who has never been confirmed? If your answer to any of these questions is “Yes” and you are at least 18 years old, Introduction to Catholicism might be just what you've been looking for. It is the initial phase of the RCIA process, and is also call Inquiry. It includes 9 sessions covering basic Catholic beliefs and practices in an informal setting where questions are welcomed. Our first session will be Wednesday, May 27th, at 7:00 pm in Room 2 at the Parish Center on Garden Street, between Murray and Race. If you have any questions, please contact Deacon Ken Ramage 734-8303; [email protected], or Jack Martinesen – 303-8706. Weekly Collection Your continued generosity in the weekly collections is greatly appreciated. The collection amount for the week ending, June 28, 2015: SM HF SC ST Actual Collection Amount: $15,775.87 Actual Collection Amount: $4,124.31 Actual Collection Amount: $7,991.83 Actual Collection Amount: $516.78 who have responded to personally meet everyone and to discuss the best way of disseminating information to those requesting help. In keeping with diocesan guidelines in offering this resource, counselors would need to possess a professional license, a business license, proof of liability insurance and their own place of business (professional services cannot take place on parish property). At this time, the Bethlehem Center is in the process of developing a ministry to address those with mental health issues. As this essential need comes to be a reality, we will keep the parish informed through the bulletin and website. At some point, the parish may be able to offer general sessions on communication or other pertinent issues to make families and marriages stronger and more resilient to overcoming obstacles. Please pray for all those who suffer from mental health issues, addiction and other crises that seem overwhelming and unresolvable. Through God’s grace and our prayers and assistance, we hope that many will understand that they can overcome their issues and realize the blessings that God brings to their lives. 4 Wednesday, July 08, 2015 Liturgy/Sacraments 5 Wednesday, July 22, 2015 Bible/Tradition 6 Wednesday, August 05, 2015 Bible/Tradition 7 Wednesday, August 19, 2015 Saints/Mary/Prayer 8 Wednesday, Sept.02, 2015 Why Do Catholics . . ? 9 Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2015 Recap and Q&A HELP WANTED.
