Dear Friends in Christ,
The season of Advent challenges us to fulfill John the Baptist’s exhortation: “Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths” (Mark 1:2-3). Are you ready? Where are you in life this time? Advent is also the season
to watch and wait for the coming of Christ–expectantly, joyfully. Unfortunately difficulties in life can
happen during this period of waiting. You yourself may have experienced some difficulties or you might
have heard of complaints from your own family members, relatives, friends, or people with whom you have
become acquainted. “I’m worried sick about the bills I haven’t paid;” “I’ve been out of work for several
weeks now;” “I feel so alone in my relationship with my partner;” “My mother is eighty-six. I feel so trapped
with her;” “I feel so lonely and I’m dreading Christmas.”
All these people have one thing in common, they are weary and confused about what’s happening in their
lives. They are all good people too. Each one in their own way is expressing a nerve-racking anxiety because
of the situation they find themselves in; they hunger for something better. Many of them feel isolated and
alone, they long to be close to another person, to share, to freely give and receive, to take part in life. That
hunger for something better, that longing to belong, is the Spirit of God in their hearts. The Spirit of God in
our hearts is what sets us apart from all other creatures and it is the Spirit of love, the Spirit which Jesus
Christ left us.
Jesus came into our world to show us in practice what the love of God means. And he showed us as he
moved through his life: chatting to the widow, listening to the soldier, reaching out to the sick and those who
were confused. He showed it as he walked about in his home town, having something to eat, going fishing,
taking a break or following his religious ceremonies. He showed us where the love of God is; it is in the
everyday experiences, laughter and tears, hopes and disappointments.
As we begin Advent this year, each one of us will be in a different situation; different from one another and
probably different from last year. So this Advent is not simply a re-run of last Advent or the one before. This
Advent, as we think about what the coming of Christ means to us, it’s important that we relate our thoughts
to what is happening in our lives right now, because that is where Christ will come to us this Advent.
Christ comes to try to convince us how precious we are; not necessarily in the eyes of those we share our life
with but most definitely in the eyes of God our heavenly Father. God is crazy about each one of us. He
thought each person worth creating. He gives each of us strengths and weaknesses in order that we
complement one another. In that complementing we can lose our loneliness; we balance each other as we go
through life. Jesus shows us in hundreds of ways how much God values each person – not because they have
earned his love or because they have made wise, sensible decisions in life, but simply because he cannot do
anything else but love us. He finds you, and he finds me, irresistible. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it?
Whatever your situation this Advent, why not accept the fact of God’s crazy love for you? Whatever is
happening in your life, however confusing, worrying or disgusting things seem, tell yourself today that God
loves you and believes in you. Together, you can go about making sense of your life. A long time ago, St
Francis de Sales wrote, “Do not be anxious about tomorrow, either God will help you overcome it or give
you the strength to bear it.” Why not make that your motto for Advent? Christ really does come to make a
difference in our understanding of the completeness of his Father’s care for us.

Queridos Amigos en Cristo,
El tiempo de Adviento nos invita a cumplir con la exhortación de Juan el Bautista: “Preparen el camino del
Señor, allanad sus senderos” (Marcos 1: 2-3). ¿Estás listo? ¿Dónde estás en la vida esta vez? Adviento es también
la temporada de ver y esperar la venida de Cristo, con alegría. Desafortunadamente dificultades en la vida pueden
ocurrir durante este período de espera. Usted mismo puede haber experimentado algunas dificultades o es posible
que haya oído hablar de las quejas de los miembros de su propia familia, parientes, amigos o personas con las que
ya se ha familiarizado. “Estoy muy preocupado por las facturas que no he pagado;” “He estado sin trabajo durante
varias semanas;” “Me siento tan solo en mi relación con mi pareja”, “Mi madre es de ochenta y seis. Me siento
tan atrapado con ella”, “Me siento tan solo y me atemoriza la Navidad. “
Todas estas personas tienen una cosa en común, que están cansados y confundidos acerca de lo que está pasando
en sus vidas. Todos ellos son gente buena también. Cada uno a su manera, están expresando una ansiedad de
nervios debido a la situación en que se encuentran; tienen hambre de algo mejor. Muchos de ellos se sienten
aislados y solos, ellos quieren estar cerca de otra persona, de compartir, de dar y recibir libremente, a participar en
la vida. Esa hambre de algo mejor, ese anhelo de pertenecer, es el Espíritu de Dios en sus corazones. El Espíritu
de Dios en nuestros corazones es lo que nos diferencia de las demás criaturas y es el Espíritu de amor, el Espíritu
que Jesucristo nos dejó.
Jesús vino a nuestro mundo para mostrarnos en la práctica lo que significa el amor de Dios. Y él nos mostró
mientras se movía a través de su vida: charlando con la viuda, escuchando a soldado, llegando a los enfermos y a
los que estaban confundidos. Se lo mostró mientras caminaba alrededor de su ciudad natal, que tiene algo de
comer, ir de pesca, tomando un descanso o después de sus ceremonias religiosas. Él nos mostró donde está el
amor de Dios; es en la experiencia cotidiana, risas y lágrimas, esperanzas y decepciones.
Al comenzar el Adviento de este año, cada uno de nosotros va a estar en una situación diferente; diferente entre
este año y probablemente diferente al del año pasado. Así que este Adviento no es simplemente una repetición de
Adviento pasado o anterior. Este Adviento, como pensamos acerca de lo que la venida de Cristo significa para
nosotros, es importante que relacionemos nuestros pensamientos a lo que está sucediendo en nuestras vidas en
este momento, porque es allí donde Cristo vendrá a nosotros en este Adviento.
Cristo viene a tratar de convencernos de lo precioso que somos; no necesariamente ante los ojos de aquellos que
compartimos nuestra vida con pero si ante los ojos de Dios, nuestro Padre celestial. Dios está loco por cada uno
de nosotros. Pensó que cada persona vale la pena crear. Él da a cada uno de nosotros fortaleza y debilidad con el
fin de que nos complementemos el uno al otro. En esa complementación podemos perder nuestra soledad;
equilibrandonos entre sí a medida que avanzamos por la vida. Jesús nos muestra en cientos de formas lo mucho
que Dios valora a cada persona - no porque hayan ganado su amor o porque han tomado decisiones sabias y
sensatas en la vida, sino simplemente porque no puede hacer otra cosa que amarnos. Él te encuentra, y me
encuentra, irresistible. Es difícil de creer, ¿no?
Sea cual sea tu situación en este Adviento, ¿por qué no aceptar el hecho del amor loco de Dios por ti? Lo que está
sucediendo en tu vida, sin embargo las cosas confusas, preocupantes o repugnantes que parezcan, te digan hoy
que Dios te ama y cree en ti. Juntos, podemos darle sentido a tu vida. Hace mucho tiempo, San Francisco de Sales
escribió: “No se inquieten por el mañana, o Dios les ayudará a superar o les dará la fuerza para soportarlo.” ¿Por
qué no hacer un lema para el Adviento? Cristo realmente viene a hacer una diferencia en nuestro entendimiento
de la integridad de la atención de su Padre para nosotros.
