The St. Agnes Chess Team won 2nd place at the 2015
Miami Country Day Classic Chess Tournament Finale.
The tournament attracted over 50 players from 12

ADVENT
The word "Advent" comes from
the Latin “adventus”, which
means "coming."
One old tradition states there are
four weeks in Advent because there are four
comings of Christ: as a man at Bethlehem; in the
human heart; at our death, and at the Last Day.
Beginning and end, memory and hope, life is a
continuing cycle.
This is the message of Advent-the continuing
possibility of renewal, of rebuilding our lives.

Gospel (Luke 21:25-28, 34-36) Jesus said to his disciples: "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on earth
nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves. People will die of fright
in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And
then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these
signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.
"Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties
of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who
lives on the face of the earth. Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape
the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man."
Brief commentary
Today, the first Sunday of the holy season of Advent, marks the first Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year. For four
Sundays the Church will walk along a spiritual journey toward Bethlehem, toward the feast of the Nativity of our Lord
Jesus Christ. The season’s very name (‘Advent’) itself resounds with the sense of both anticipation and urgency. It is an
announcement of a dawn, a beginning that is about to break forth. Yet, in every Advent season the Church
commemorates three ‘advents’. She remembers the first advent, the first awaiting of the “dawn from on high” and “light
of the world,” which was so expected in ancient Israel, as the People of God expected the coming of the messiah. The
messiah, the one anointed and empowered by God as God’s own agent, was expected to inaugurate God’s kingdom
where justice, peace and joy would dwell. The Christian faith is the witness of the fulfillment of God’s promise in Jesus,
who – surprisingly far more than a mere ‘agent’ of God – was truly God in the person of his only begotten Son. In every
Advent the Church also prepares to celebrate the second meaning of Advent, which is not only another anniversary of
the birth of Jesus in our world, but also a celebration of Christmas as a permanent reality of ‘Immanuel’, of God with us
and for us. Indeed, God came to us not in displays of power and glory, but in the vulnerability of a child, a vulnerability
that is the result of God’s real love in self-donation for the human race, a vulnerability that is both unsettling and
disarming. And in every Advent the Church reminds her children of the third meaning of advent, which is that at
present we are living not an ultimate, but rather a penultimate reality. Yes, Christian hope awaits the day when we “will
be like him, for we will see him as he is,” when “God will wipe away every tear from every eye,” and when the “lion will
lie down with the lamb.” This ‘Day of the Lord’ is anticipated in our own individual passing from this world to the
‘house of the Father’, and it will happen most definitively at the second coming of Jesus Christ in glory. Today’s gospel
message, using imaginative and striking apocalyptic texts, serves as an alert, a wake-up-call of biblical proportions. It is
filled with a sense of foreboding and urgency, warning and exhortation. But it at its heart is a call for hope and readiness.
It is the three ‘Advents’ (past, present and future) that the readings will remind us of this Advent. Let us therefore be
“vigilant at all times and pray” to have “the strength…to stand before the Son of Man.”
Today’s reading offers two significant messages:
• The core of the Christian good news is that God has come in
the person of his Son Jesus Christ. And nothing can ever be the
same again in our lives. How different the world is since Jesus
has entered it! How different our lives when Christ dwells in
our hearts! Advent prepares us to be caught up in the joy of
this exultant news that transforms our lives and our world.
• For four Sundays the Church will reflect on the three advents
in human history: the Advent of the past, as the people of Israel
awaited the coming of the messiah; the Advent of the present,
the preparation for the liturgical celebration of the Nativity of
the Lord Jesus as perpetual reality in our lives; and the Advent
of the future, with the awareness that Christians ‘live in joyful
hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in glory’.

estruendo del mar y de las olas, muriéndose los hombres de terror y de ansiedad por las cosas que vendrán sobre
el mundo; porque las fuerzas de los cielos serán sacudidas. Y entonces verán venir al Hijo del hombre en una
nube con gran poder y gloria. Cuando empiecen a suceder estas cosas, cobrad ánimo y levantad la cabeza porque
se acerca vuestra liberación."
"Guardaos de que no se hagan pesados vuestros corazones por el libertinaje, por la embriaguez y por la
preocupaciones de la vida, y venga aquel Día de improvisto sobre vosotros, como un lazo; porque vendrá sobre
todos los que habitan toda la faz de la tierra. Estad en vela, pues, orando en todo tiempo para que tengáis fuerza y
escapéis a todo lo que está para venir, y podáis estar en pie delante del Hijo del hombre.
Comentario breve
Hoy, con el primer Domingo de Adviento, la Iglesia marca el primer domingo del año litúrgico. Por cuatro domingos la
Iglesia caminara a lo largo de una jornada espiritual hacia Belén, hacia la celebración de la Navidad de nuestro Señor
Jesucristo. El mismo nombre de ‘adviento’ resuena con un sentido de anticipación y de urgencia. Es un anuncio del
amanecer, del nuevo comienzo que esta por retoñar. Pero también la Iglesia conmemora tres ‘advientos’. Ella recuerda
el primer adviento, la primera espera del ‘amanecer de lo alto’ y ‘la luz del mundo’, que con tanta expectativa esperaba
Israel en la antigüedad. Como Pueblo de Dios, Israel vivía en expectativa de la venida del mesías. El mesías era de ser el
ungido y autorizado por Dios como su propio agente. Y se esperaba que hubiera de inaugurar el reino de Dios donde la
justica, la paz y la alegría habitaran. La fe cristiana atestigua el cumplimiento de las promesas de Dios en Jesús, quien –
sorprendentemente mucho más que un mero ‘agente’ de Dios – era en verdad Dios en la persona de su hijo unigénito. En
cada adviento la Iglesia también prepara a celebrar el segundo sentido del aviento, que no es simplemente otro
aniversario del nacimiento de Jesús en nuestro mundo, sino también la celebración de la navidad como una realidad
permanente de ‘Emanuel’, de ‘Dios con y para nosotros’. En verdad, Dios no entre en nuestro mundo con exhibiciones de
poder y gloria, sino en la vulnerabilidad de un pequeño; una vulnerabilidad que resulta del amor real de Dios que se
entrega por la raza humana; una vulnerabilidad que es desconcertante y nos desarma. Y cada adviento la Iglesia le
recuerda a sus hijos e hijas del tercer sentido del adviento, que es la realidad penúltima presente en que vivimos. Vivimos
en una realidad que no es ultima, sino penúltima. Si, la esperanza cristiana espera el día en que “seremos como El,
porque lo veremos tal como es,” cuando “Dios enjugara cada lagrima,” y cuando el “león se sentara con la cordero.” Este
‘Día del Señor’ es anticipado en el paso de cada uno de nosotros de este mundo ‘hacia la casa del Padre’, y llegara
definitivamente con la segunda venida de Jesucristo en gloria. El mensaje del evangelio de hoy, utilizando el imaginativo
e impactante género apocalíptico, sirve como una alerta, como un despertar de proporciones bíblicas. Es repleto con un
sentido de presentimiento y urgencia, de advertencia y exhortación. Pero en su corazón hay un llamado a la esperanza y
a la preparación. Son estos tres ‘advientos’ (pasado, presente y futuro) que las lecturas nos recuerdan este Adviento.
Vamos a entonces estar ‘vigilantes a todo tiempo, y orando’ para poder presentarnos ‘delante del Hijo del hombre’.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta dos ideas
importantes:
♦ El corazón de la buena nueva cristiana es que Dios ha venido en la
persona de su Hijo Jesucristo. Y nada en nuestras vidas será igual.
¡Que diferente es el mundo desde que Jesús ha entrado! El Adviento
nos prepara a ser captivados por la alegría de la noticia exultante que
transforma nuestras vidas y nuestro mundo.
♦ Por cuatro Domingos la Iglesia reflexionara sobre los tres advientos
de la historia humana: el adviento de la antigüedad, en que el pueblo
de Israel esperaba la venida del mesías; el adviento del presente, en
que nos preparamos por la celebración litúrgica de la natividad de
nuestro Señor Jesucristo como realidad perpetua en nuestras vidas; y
el adviento del futuro, con la conciencia de que los cristianos ‘viven en
alegre expectativa por la venida gloriosa de nuestro Señor Jesucristo’.

que será realizada completamente por la venida de
Jesucristo en gloria? o’ para poder presentarnos
‘delante del Hijo del hombre’.
