Un Nuevo Año Litúrgico
A New Liturgical Year
El Primer Domingo de Adviento marca el comienzo de una de las estaciones más hermosas en la vida de la iglesia. El Adviento tiene un
carácter doble; es una época de preparación para la Navidad cuando
recordamos y celebramos la primera venida de Cristo, y también es una
época en la que ese recuerdo dirige nuestra mentes y corazones a esperar la seguna venida de Cristo al final del tiempo. El Adviento es una
época de expectativa llena de devoción y de regocijo. El Primer Domingo
de Adviento también marca el comienzo de un nuevo año litúrgico en la
vida de la iglesia.
El Primer Domingo de Adviento no siempre ha marcado el comienzo
del año litúrgico. Al comienzo la iglesia solamente celebraba el domingo,
una celebración semanal de la resurrección del Señor. Sin embargo,
desde muy temprano (probablemente desde mediados del segundo siglo)
hay evidencia de una celebración anual de la resurrección del Señor y por
mucho tiempo el “comienzo” del año litúrgico coincidió con la Vigilia Pascual.
No fue sino hasta cerca del siglo diez u once que el Adviento fue considerado como el comienzo del año litúrgico ya que con una mentalidad
más histórica, tenía sentido comenzar el año litúrgico con el comienzo de
la vida terrenal de Jesús en su nacimiento (la Navidad fue introducida al
calendario en el cuarto siglo.)
Interpretar el año litúrgico históricamente corre el riesgo de celebrar la
liturgia como una conmemoración de eventos históricos y no como una
participación en esos eventos. En lugar de una mentalidad histórica, el
misterio pascual –la muerte y resurrección de Jesús (mencionados en la
columna de la semana pasada)– es el centro mismo del año litúrgico y
provee la herramienta para la interpretación litúrgica.
Esto significa que todas las fiestas del año litúrgico conducen a la
asamblea a una mayor apreciación de su participación por medio del
bautismo y del diario vivir en el misterio redentor de Cristo. En vez de
“comenzar” con el nacimeinto en la Navidad y proceder hacia la muerte en
el Triduo, a través del año litúrgico celebramos todo el misterio de
Cristo. Varias épocas y fiestas apuntan a aspectos particulares, más no
podemos perder la visión de todo el misterio de la vida de Jesus, su
nacimiento, su misión, sufrimiento, muerte, resurrección, ascensión, y
envío del Espíritu a vivir entre nosotros y dentro de nosotros.
The First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of perhaps the
most beautiful season in the life of the church. Advent has a two-fold
character; it is a season to prepare for Christmas when we remember
and celebrate Christ’s first coming to us, and it is also a season when
the remembrance directs our minds and hearts to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time. Advent is a time of devout and joyful
expectation. The First Sunday of Advent also marks the beginning of
a new liturgical year in the life of the church.
The First Sunday of Advent however has not always been the
beginning of the church’s liturgical year. At first the church celebrated
only Sunday, a weekly celebration of the Lord’s resurrection. Nonetheless, very early on (probably from at least mid-second century)
there is evidence of an annual celebration of the Lord’s resurrection
and for a long time the “beginning” of the liturgical year coincided with
the Easter Vigil.
It was not until about the tenth or eleventh centuries that Advent
began to be considered the beginning of the liturgical year since, with
a more historical mentality, it made sense to begin the liturgical year
with the beginning of Jesus’ earthly life at his birth (Christmas was
introduced on the calendar in the fourth century.)
Interpreting the liturgical year historically runs a risk of celebrating
liturgy as a commemoration of historical events rather than as our
own participation in those events. Instead of a historical mentality, the
paschal mystery –Jesus’s dying and rising (mentioned in last week’s
column)– is at the very center of the liturgical year and provides the
tool for liturgical interpretation.
This means that all the festivals of the liturgical year lead the assembly into a greater appreciation of their participation through their
baptism and daily living in the redemptive mystery of Christ. Rather
than “begin” with the birth at Christmas and proceed toward the death
at Triduum, throughout the liturgical year we celebrate the whole
mystery of Christ. Various seasons and festivals zero in on a particular aspect, but we can never lose sight of the whole mystery of
Jesus’ birth, mission, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, and
sending of the Spirit to dwell among and within us.

Take these activities to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
Make an Advent calendar. Together as a family, write what you
will do each day to get ready for Jesus' coming.
As a family, make an Advent wreath. The Advent wreath is a
circle of evergreens with four candles. You can use a styrofoam ring
for the base. Hollow out four holes to fit the candles. Four candles
identify the weeks of Advent: three are purple, for the long wait; one
pink, for the third Sunday to express our joy that we are halfway
through our Advent waiting. Decorate with artificial evergreen twigs
and berries. Place the Advent wreath on your family table and light it
when you pray during advent.
Discuss the following question with your family: What will it take
for us to get ready to celebrate Christ at Christmas?

NOVEMBER 27
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
The Advent themes of hope, vigilance, and repentance are present in today’s First Reading and Gospel. Isaiah’s hope is that his
people will repent of their sinful ways and turn back to God. In St.
Mark’s Gospel, Jesus warns the people of His day, and us, to be
watchful, to be ready for we do not when He will return. As we
begin the Advent season, St. Paul reminds us that fellowship with
Jesus Christ strengthens us. May we, as faithful stewards, put our
hope in the Lord and repent of our sins. Advent is an excellent
time to participate in Sacrament of Reconciliation.

JESUS IS THE REASON
En el mundo de hoy la época de Navidad comienza el día
después de Acción de Gracias y termina el 25 de diciembre. Para
muchos de nosotros éste es un tiempo lleno de tareas, como hornear, enviar tarjetas, escoger regalos, ir de fiestas, y poner el arbolito
y las decoraciones. Si a todo esto añadimos el trabajo diario y el
cuidado de nuestros hijos, este tiempo del año puede ser muy estresante. La Iglesia le da un énfasis diferente a las próximas cuatro
semanas. Éste es el Adviento, un tiempo de espera, con lecturas
bíblicas y oraciones que preparan nuestro corazón y nuestra vida
para la venida del Señor el día de Navidad. Nuestras costumbres
varían según nuestra herencia y cultura; así podemos encender la
corona de Adviento, poner el árbol de Jesé, poner un nacimiento o
belén u otras devociones especiales. Una costumbre de Adviento
en Alemania se llama Kristkindl (significa “el Niño Jesús”) y bien
puede hacerse en familia, en pequeños grupos o aun individualmente. En la costumbre original la madre de la casa pasaba alrededor de un círculo familiar un recipiente con papelitos enrollados y
en cada uno estaba el nombre de un miembro de la familia. Cada
persona tomaba uno de los papelitos y miraba el nombre con cuidado de que nadie más lo viera. Durante todo el resto del Adviento
la persona cuyo nombre apareció en el papel se convertía en el
Kristkindl de la persona que agarró el papel y ésta última hacía al
menos una buena acción diaria por su Kristkindl, ¡pero sin que la
persona supiera quién lo hacía! Hasta los niños pequeños podían
participar. Se convirtió en una manera hermosa de preparar el corazón de todos para servir a Cristo en otras personas. Honra a otras
personas en tu Kristkindl: reza por ellas, ahorra dinero para enviar
una donación en su nombre, haz un donativo a algún refugio público, haz tareas extras que no te hayan pedido, adopta una familia

In today’s world the Christmas season starts on the
day after Thanksgiving and ends on December 25. For many
of us this time is filled with baking, sending cards, choosing
gifts, attending parties, and setting up a Christmas tree and
decorations. Add to this our daily work schedules and the
needs of our children and this time of the year can be very
stressful. The Church puts a different emphasis on the next
four weeks. This is Advent, the season of expectation, with
scripture readings and prayers calling on us to prepare in our
hearts and lives for the Lord’s coming on Christmas Day. According to our heritage, we may already have Advent customs
such as the lighting of candles on the Advent wreath, a Jesse
tree, setting up a manger scene ready for the Christ child at
Christmas, or special devotions. An Advent tradition from
Germany called Kristkindl (meaning “Christ child”) is suitable
for families, small church groups, or even for individuals. The
original custom was for the mother of the house to pass a bowl
around the family circle containing rolled-up slips of paper
with a family member’s name on each one. Each would take
one slip and carefully looked at the name so no one else could
see it. For the rest of Advent the person named on the paper
became the Kristkindl of the person who took the slip of paper,
and he or she would do at least one good deed a day for them,
but without them finding out who did it! Even young children
could do this. It became a treasured way of preparing hearts to
serve Christ through serving other people. Honor Jesus in the
person of your Kristkindl: pray for them, save money to send
to a good cause in their name, donate gifts to a shelter, do extra chores unasked, adopt a needy family. Copyright © 2010, World

Chris weighs about 5½ pounds now. He is really
putting on baby fat which will help keep Chris warm
after birth. “I’m still eating leftovers from Thanksgiving.” The
lungs are almost complete. You may be able to see Chris’ body
parts as the uterine wall gets thinner - feet, head, and hands.
Mom is looking for a pediatrician to examine the baby after birth.
She’s getting ready in case Chris is ready.

Advent, the parishioners of Our Lady of LaSalette
Church have been sharing God’s love by reaching out
to our neighbors in need. Each ornament on the Giving Tree expresses a need to a child in our community
