Our soul waits for the Lord, who is our help and our shield.
— Psalm 33:20
Reflections by Fr. Carlos
From Fr. Al’s Desk
“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
Mt 6:20
I once wondered aloud why parishioners of this
parish are so hospitable. A lady standing next to me
immediately said to me, “It’s the Sacred Heart of Jesus.”
I was like, “Bingo!” Jesus’ heart of love is the treasure
trove of this parish. And as parishioners discover and
tap into His heart of love, they get transformed into great
ambassadors of love. They themselves, by their life of
prayers, self-denial and charity, begin to store up for
themselves treasures in heaven.
Last weekend, in my sermon, I reflected on Jesus’
teaching on treasure. How he teaches us that our
treasures or the things we treasure have enormous
influence on us. “For where your treasure is”, he says,
“there also will your heart be” Lk 12:34. He draws a
distinction between an earthly treasure and a heavenly
treasure. He explains that true treasure is to be rich in
what matters to God. And using a banking language, he
asks us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven.
He also repeats that in today’s gospel: “Sell your
belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for
yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible
treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth
destroy.” So how do we store up treasures in heaven?
We do that by not letting a day pass without depositing
into our account in heaven, by doing things that matter
to God. Whenever we love God with all heart and
strength we are making a deposit. Every selfless act of
love toward others, especially, to the most vulnerable in
the society, is huge deposit. Every time spent in God’s
service stores up treasures for us in heaven. Whenever
we use our time, talents and resources in the church, we
are making a deposit into our account. Our offertory
commitments at Sunday Masses are deposits into
accounts. Quality times spent in prayers, meditation,
and self-mortification, being truthful, standing up for
mercy, justice and peace are all spiritual treasures. And
here is what I discover: every time I focus my life on
what matters to God I feel happy, fulfilled and a sense of
being the best version of myself. It’s a beautiful feeling!
So get to work and start storing up for yourself treasures
in heaven.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,
Today, and on the next weeks, I want to share with you
some points of the article “8 Questions Non-Catholics
Almost Always Ask When They Attend Mass” of Jen
Schlameuss-Perry. I hope will be a Help to understand
better the big mistery of the Mass.
What’s with all of the sitting, standing and kneeling?
We call it “Catholic Aerobics.” It’s how we stay fit. Just
kidding! Each posture during Mass has function and
meaning. When we sit, we are engaged in active
listening, giving our attention to the readings, the homily
and some of the prayers. We stand for a couple of
reasons—to listen to the Gospel (we sit for the other
Bible readings) to acknowledge that we are in the
presence of Christ. The Gospel is the Word of God
speaking to us in the present. We hear stories about
Jesus and the words that He spoke and so we stand in
honor of this. Sometimes our standing together shows
our unity in prayer (like when we pray the Creed or the
General Intercessions) as the Body of Christ, and we
stand together as a community preparing to receive
the Body of Christ in the Eucharist (see #4). Kneeling is a
penitential/reverential posture. We acknowledge our
sinfulness and need for God’s healing, so we kneel in
God’s Presence (mostly while the prayers regarding the
Eucharist are being prayed) asking for that healing.
What’s that squiggly motion everybody does in front
of their faces before the Gospel is read?
This is one of my favorites—particularly because when I
tell those who are seeking to convert what this one is all
about, I tell them to go home and quiz their Catholics and
they almost never know the answer. Before the Gospel is
read, when the community stands together to listen, we
make the sign of the cross (usually with a thumb) on our
foreheads, our lips and our hearts signifying that we are
asking God to always keep the Gospel on our minds, on
our lips and in our hearts. If we keep the Gospel in these
three places, all our thoughts, words and desires will be
in line with Jesus. It’s a physical reminder to us that we
need to not just hear the Gospel, but to live the Gospel
every day of our lives. Many, many Catholics don’t know
this, and they just make a crazy squiggle in their general
head and torso area. They have a good laugh and are
happy to learn why they’ve been doing that their whole
lives when it’s explained to them by the Catechumens
that they love (and now know more about Catholic
practice than they do).

Youth Ministry News
We live in a world of instant gratification. Most
things can be achieved instantly via technology and
the way our world is set up. So when it comes to
church and God, a lot of people want that same
instant gratification. One place people go for that
gratification is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. As
Catholics, we believe that if we go to confession and
confess our sins, they are instantly forgiven and we
have a clean slate, kind of like a Etch-A-Sketch on
our soul. But what people tend to forget about
Reconciliation is that once we confess our sins, we
are challenged not to commit those sins again. Now
that’s not to say we don’t mess up every now and
then, but we are asked to try our best, with God’s
help, to not commit those sins again. One problem
I have encountered with teens lately, is they seem to
think they can keep committing the same sins over
and over because it “doesn’t matter” how much they
mess up, they can just go to confession because,
“God will forgive me anyway.” Well, that action is
a sin itself. It is called the sin of presumption.
We live in a world where people look for the
easy way out, even when it comes to God. So as
we end summer and prepare for school to start, I
have two challenges for our teens. First, go to
confession! We all need confession in our lives
whether we think we do or not. Second, read sacred
scripture. As I was writing this article I came
across a great scripture passage about sin and
confession. It comes from 1 John 1:5-10 and is a
great analogy for sin. One part of the this passage I
really love says, “If we say we, “We have fellowship
with him,” while we continue to walk in darkness, we
lie and do not act in truth.” This part of the passage I
feel perfectly sums up what I am trying to say in this
article.

Me dije, "¡Bingo!"
importan a Dios.
