That is why the bible explains God’s stance in strong De hecho, nadie puede agradar a Dios o ganar nada uncompromising terms. Here are a few examples: de él sin humildad. Es por eso que la Biblia explica la God opposes the proud, but gives grace to postura de Dios en fuertes términos inflexibles. Aquí the humble. 1 Pet 5:5 están algunos ejemplos: For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those Dios se opone a los orgullosos pero muestra su favor who humble themselves will be exalted. Lk 1:51-52 [Dios] Ha hecho proezas con su brazo; ha esparcido a And why is humility so important to God? Because los soberbios en el pensamiento de sus corazones. “Humility” says St. Augustine, “is the foundation of all Ha quitado a los poderosos de sus tronos; y ha virtues” including love, patience, gentleness, kindness, exaltado a los humildes. Lucas 1:51-52 gratitude, prayerfulness and so on. That means virtuous Y por qué es la humildad tan importante para Dios? acts performed without humility are false before God. Such porque la "Humildad", dice San Agustín, "es el acts are fake, hypocritical and therefore lies. And as the fundamento de todas las virtudes" como el amor, la scripture says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, gratitud, devoción y But those who deal faithfully are His delight” Prov 12:22. así sucesivamente. Eso significa que los actos St. Augustine explains further, “…in the soul in which this virtuosos realizados sin humildad son falsos ante virtue [humility] does not exist there cannot be any other Dios. Y como dice la Escritura, "Los labios The term “humility” derives from the Latin word, humus mentirosos son abominación al Señor, pero los que (earth). CARLOS Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord: Next Sunday we will have the blessing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of our parish. During these years we have gone through difficult times and moments of great grace. We can not fail to see in all these events the loving hand of God that leads us forward and thank him wholeheartedly for this time. Archbishop Jose Gomez will join us in the celebration along with the regional Bishop Robert Barron. The Archbishop will preside over the Mass at 11:15 am. We look forward to your presence and your prayers. God Bless your week. Please note: The 10:30 AM, 12 Noon, & 5:30 PM Masses are cancelled. Youth Ministry News I have been waiting to write a thank you to all who support our Youth Ministry due to the fact that we were still waiting to confirm all of our donations and fundraising income from this summer. With that said, thank you to all of our parishioners who supported us this summer with our various fundraising events. Because of you we raised a little over $4,500 between donations, chocolate sales, and other fundraising opportunities. We are very grateful and blessed for all of the help we receive. Without this parish, most of our teens would not be able to participate in conferences and other events that we go to throughout the year. So again, thank you for everything! Our ministry has grown so much in the past 6 years and is still growing in ways I couldn’t even imagine when I started as Youth Minister, and a lot of it is due to the support of our parish which I am truly thankful for. REMINDER: Confirmation registrations due Aug. 31. ALTAR SERVER TRAINING Come to serve our Lord on sacred ground, come be a minister to the Lord within the sanctuary of Sacred Heart Church! Road to priesthood involves a rigorous formation process Seminary formation involves much more than academic study. Prior to ordination, a candidate for priesthood goes through a lengthy evaluation period, including an internship during which he lives in a rectory and works with priests, staff and parishioners. During this time, the candidate is evaluated as to his suitability to be a priest. No one is ordained unless the staff of St. John’s Seminary, including the lay faculty and formation advisers, concludes that the candidate has attained an emotional, psychological and sexual maturity appropriate for his age and for the celibate life of a priest. For more information, please visit www.lavocations.org or call the Office for Vocations at (213) 637-7248. FOOD PANTRY Next Sunday, September 4th is the first Sunday of the month. Please bring your non-perishable food items and place them in the red bins located outside the church doors. Through your generosity Sacred Heart parishioners have been a great help to the many hungry families in our area. Thank you for your continued support. Finding the Narrow Way with the Mystics Appreciation Dinner for the Clergy and Religious My Vocation is to Love God with all my heart and soul; everything else flows from this, says Mother Teresa. If we are to deepen our Faith and grow in the Love of our Lord, we must regularly spend time with God! Our classes are Contemplative, and they will help lead us deeper into our own Faith. Mysticism is all about “experience”, the transformation of” Union with God”. We will talk about leaving our comfort zones and the ability to consciously say “Yes” to God. If we have never lived outside of our world of achievement and possessions, then we will have never learned to be still and to breathe with God. We will meet at the San Buenaventura Parish Offices on two Saturdays a month, beginning on September 10, at 9AM. Please call Anne Vanoni to register 672-0920.
