Al’s Desk THE FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS On September 14 every year we celebrate the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The responsorial psalm for the feast captures the point of the feast. It says, “Do not forget the works of the Lord!” Like all others, this feast is meant to ensure that we do not forget the goodness of the Lord who conquered sin and death on the wood of the cross. Thus as the preface of the feast says, “For you placed the salvation of the human race on the wood of the cross, so that where death arose, life might again spring forth and the evil one, who conquered on a tree, might likewise on a tree be conquered, through Christ our Lord.” And so my brothers and sisters, never forget the works of the Lord. Have the crucifix placed in your homes, cars and in front of your desks at work. Wear the cross. Not just as a fashionable jewelry, but as a powerful reminder that Christ has paid the ultimate price of our salvation. Let it be a reminder that we too are called to carry our crosses daily and follow Jesus. Like Christ, we too must make sacrifices for others as St. John the Evangelist rightly said, “We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers” 1 Jn 3:16. Contemplate the mystery of God’s love on the image of Christ crucified. The theologian par excellence of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas used to say, “I learned more things from praying before a crucifix than I do from books.” So do not be ashamed of making the sign of cross. Boldly proclaim the power of Christ crucified by blessing yourself and your belongings with the sign of the cross. For in Christ Jesus, we too will triumph over evil, sin and death through the way of the holy cross. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS We will be offering the annual Blessing of the animals on the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, Saturday, October 1st, at 10am. Bring your pets/animals to the main parking lot behind the Church (please bring the tools needed to clean up afterwards). LIVING GOD’S WORD We pray for the wisdom to live justly, that is, in such a way that we keep ourselves in proper relationship with God, with each other, and with the earth. We pray for the wisdom to use our financial resources to help bring about such “just living.” September 18, 2016 Page 3 Youth Ministry News This past weekend our Core Team spent the weekend up at Zaca Lake for our team retreat. It was an amazing weekend filled with bonding, faith sharing and all around an amazing time. Sacred Heart School News [email protected] SCHOOL STUDENT NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY The school, mindful of its mission to be a witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students regardless of race, color, or national and/or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, disability, sex, or national and/or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and practices, scholarship programs, and athletic and other schooladministered programs, although certain athletic leagues and other programs may limit participation and some archdiocesan schools operate as single sex schools. While the school does not discriminate against students with special needs, a full range of services may not always be available to them. Decisions concerning the admission and continued enrollment of a student in the school are based upon the student’s emotional, academic and physical abilities and the resources available to the school in meeting the student’s needs. CATECHETICAL SUNDAY “Prayer: The Faith Prayed” Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Every Friday Friday 9 a.m. — Saturday 8:30 a.m. Let us not complain of our distractions which assail us in our prayers. Why not substitute for our poor weak prayers those of our Eucharistic God? He is there in the Host to be not only our Victim and our nourishment, but also our Mediator with God the Father. Did not Jesus promise? - “Whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give to you.” The Master does not say: “ That for which you ask without distractions”. No, He says: “What you ask in my name”. (St Peter Julian Eymard) We have an urgent need for “prayer warriors” to spend one hour with Our Lord on Friday at 5PM. We must not depend on those who “just drop in”. To commit please call Janet 212-1070. This week’s vocal Holy Hour in English @ 7p.m. is for Sacred Heart Parish.
