▪Vestir al desnudo
▪ Visitar al enfermo
▪ Socorrer a los presos
▪ Enterrar a los muertos
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the
heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees
Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze
freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money;
the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in
created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and
assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if
addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the
Samaritan woman: "If you knew the gift of God!"
OBRAS ESPIRITUALES
DE MISERICORDIA
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who
manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let
the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and
glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed
in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those
in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them
feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
▪ Enseñar al que no sabe
▪ Dar buen consejo al que
lo necesita
▪ Corregir al que se equivoca
▪ Perdonar las injurias
▪ Consolar al triste
▪ Sufrir con paciencia los
defectos de los demás
▪ Rezar a Dios por vivos y
difuntos
CORPORAL
WORKS OF MERCY
Pope Francis
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its
anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace
from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm,
may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives
and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of
Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy
Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Religious Education Teachers Needed
Are you looking to share your faith with others and grow in it as well?
Serve the youth at our parish as a catechist! Classes are from 9:00 am to
10:30 am on Sunday mornings, allowing enough time to attend the 11:00
am Mass. Classes begin Sunday, September 18th, and run through Sunday, April 30th, with occasional Sundays off for holidays. Please contact
Amber Cerrato for more information. Thank you and God bless! 608-2575000 x12 or [email protected]
Change in Friday Afternoon Mass
Effective July 29th, the Friday weekday Mass at Holy Redeemer Church
will be celebrated at 7:00 pm in Spanish, rather than being bi-lingual at 5:15.
This change is made to acknowledge the population of our parish —
as we now have substantially more people at the 3 Spanish Masses each
weekend than at the 4 English Masses. While we have had at least 10
weekday Masses in English here at our parish, we have had a single
weekday Mass in Spanish only during Lent.
The change is further urged by the fact that there are over a dozen
Masses in English available in Madison on most days, while the city has
lacked any regular weekday Mass in Spanish. And finally, a Mass in
Spanish is a much better use of Fr. José Luis’ abilities — any priest is
most effective celebrating Mass and preaching in his native language.
 ABOUT OUR PARISH 
The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the
merger of three historic parishes that were established within a few
blocks of the Capitol Square during the nineteenth century.
The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and
St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish.
Both churches are in use daily. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location.
Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop
Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral church
on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). Until then, an outdoor
Way of the Cross adorns that site.
If this is your parish home and you have not yet registered as a member
of the Cathedral Parish, please do one of the following:
• ask Msgr. Holmes or an usher for a Registration Form today; or
• contact the parish office ([email protected] or 2575000) to request a Registration Form; or
• register online at www.isthmuscatholic.org.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

 FROM THE RECTOR 
Dear Friends in Christ:
This past week, our parish welcomed groups of young people working
with Love Begins Here, a summer project of the Youth Ministry program in the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis. The program began in
2009 with 56 missionaries — last year 600
missionaries were involved.
To date
48,000 hours were donated to those in
need—materially and spiritually—in our
Diocese.
On Tuesday, four middle school students –
Haven, Pete, Maria and Renee – under the
direction of Jason Kopp – worked at the
cathedral site where we currently have the
outdoor Way of the Cross. They did a
great deal of mulching and some watering
on a very hot and humid day. Special thanks to parishioner Leon
Blanchard, who oversees gardening at the site, for working with the
young people both on Tuesday and Thursday last week.
This past week was a great time to get work done up at the cathedral
site since just at the end of the preceding week, we had a number of
new trees put in to replace those that had died. The winter after the
original plantings went in was a very hard one – lots of snow. All over
the city, rabbits resorted to eating the bark on trees to survive. The
great number of young trees at the cathedral site were an especially
tempting target, and a great number of them were fatally damaged.
They leafed out for one more year, but they were doomed. In the replanting, a number of shorter, flowering trees were replaced by linden
trees that will grow taller and give nice shade. There are still a couple
more trees due to be planted at the site, which were not available until
next month, so there will be a further upgrade as well.
On Wednesday, another group from Love Begins Here came to give the
rectory windows a long overdue cleaning. Many thanks to Megan,
Rory, Kimberly, Rebecca and Anna, under the direction of their leaders
Anna Grogan and Kristin Wilkinson. Their good work has made our
venerable rectory notably brighter. Downtown Madison is a really
grimy environment – not nearly as bad as it was when everyone was
burning coal and leaded gasoline, but still bad enough.
Thanks to Jared Konkel, summer employee at the parish, who helped
both days to see that our middle school volunteers had all the materials
they needed, and who supervised the window washing project at the
rectory.
As we go to press, we are still expecting to welcome a final Love Begins
Here team on Thursday. The plan is that they will do weeding and a
little more sprucing up at the cathedral site – on what promises to be a
more pleasant day. We don’t yet know who those young people will
be, but thanks to them as well!
Msgr. Kevin D. Holmes

alma orante "habla desatinos".
