This Sunday's Gospel begins with the question that a lawyer asks Jesus: “Teacher,
what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” (Lk 10: 25). Knowing him to be expert in
Sacred Scripture, the Lord asks this man to give the reply himself; indeed, he
formulates it perfectly, citing the two main commandments: you shall love the Lord
your God, with all your heart, and with all your mind and with all your strength, and
love your neighbour as yourself. Then the lawyer, as if to justify himself, asks: “And
who is my neighbour?” (Lk 10: 29). This time, Jesus answers with the famous words
of the “Good Samaritan” (cf. Lk 10: 30-37) in order to show that it is up to us to
make ourselves the neighbour of all who are in need of help. In fact, the Samaritan
takes charge of the condition of a stranger whom robbers have left half dead on the
wayside; while a priest and a Levite had passed him by, perhaps thinking, on account
of a precept, that they would be contaminated by the contact with blood. The Parable
must therefore induce us to change our mindset in accordance with the logic of
Christ, which is the logic of charity: God is love, and worshipping him means
serving our brothers with sincere and generous love.

Good Shepherd will be hosting a Morning of Reflection and Formation for all Liturgical
Ministers (Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers,
and Sacristans) on August 24th from 8:30 am until 12:00 noon at the main
Church. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 am.
ALL Liturgical ministers are required to attend. The first meeting will be
conducted in Spanish.

LUMEN FIDEI
of the Supreme Pontiff Francis
The light of Faith: this is how the Church’s tradition
speaks of the great gift brought by Jesus.
Those who believe, see; they see with a light that illumines
their entire journey, for it comes from the risen Christ, the morning star
which never sets.
The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of
human existence. A light this powerful cannot come from ourselves but from
a more primordial source: in a word, it must come from God. Faith is born of
an encounter with the living God who calls us and reveals his love, a love
which precedes us and upon which we can lean for security and for building
our lives.
Faith, received from God as a supernatural gift, becomes a light for our way,
guiding our journey through time.
The Year of Faith was inaugurated on the fiftieth anniversary of the opening
of the Second Vatican Council.
The Second Vatican Council enabled the light of faith to illumine our human
experience from within, accompanying the men and women of our time on
their journey. It clearly showed how faith enriches life in all its dimensions.

El Evangelio de este domingo se abre con la pregunta que un doctor de la Ley
plantea a Jesús: “Maestro, ¿qué he de hacer para tener en herencia la vida eterna?”
(Lc 10, 25). Sabiéndole experto en Sagrada Escritura, el Señor invita a aquel hombre
a dar él mismo la respuesta, que de hecho este formula perfectamente citando los dos
mandamientos principales: amar a Dios con todo el corazón, con toda la mente y con
todas las fuerzas, y amar al prójimo como a uno mismo. Entonces, el doctor de la
Ley, casi para justificarse, pregunta: “Y ¿quién es mi prójimo?” (Lc 10, 29). Esta
vez, Jesús responde con la célebre parábola del “buen samaritano” (cf. Lc 10, 30-37),
para indicar que nos corresponde a nosotros hacernos “prójimos” de cualquiera que
tenga necesidad de ayuda. El samaritano, en efecto, se hace cargo de la situación de
un desconocido a quien los salteadores habían dejado medio muerto en el camino,
mientras que un sacerdote y un levita pasaron de largo, tal vez pensando que al
contacto con la sangre, de acuerdo con un precepto, se contaminarían. La parábola,
por lo tanto, debe inducirnos a transformar nuestra mentalidad según la lógica de
Cristo, que es la lógica de la caridad: Dios es amor, y darle culto significa servir a los
hermanos con amor sincero y generoso.

La luz de la fe: la tradición de la Iglesia ha indicado con esta
expresión el gran don traído por Jesucristo.
La característica propia de la luz de la fe es la capacidad de iluminar toda la
existencia del hombre. Porque una luz tan potente no puede provenir de nosotros
mismos; ha de venir de una fuente más primordial, tiene que venir, en definitiva,
de Dios. La fe nace del encuentro con el Dios vivo, que nos llama y nos revela su
amor, un amor que nos precede y en el que nos podemos apoyar para estar
seguros y construir la vida.
La fe, que recibimos de Dios como don sobrenatural, se presenta como luz en el
sendero, que orienta nuestro camino en el tiempo.
El Año de la fe ha comenzado en el 50 aniversario de la apertura del Concilio
Vaticano II.
El Concilio Vaticano II ha hecho que la fe brille dentro de la experiencia
humana, recorriendo así los caminos del hombre contemporáneo. De este modo,
se ha visto cómo la fe enriquece la existencia humana en todas sus dimensiones.
