WHAT`S INSIDE: Dear Cathedral Family, A Glimpse of our History
November 21, 2010 Our Lord Jesus Christ the King Dear Cathedral Family, Today we celebrate our special Feast Day - The Feast of Christ the King! Our very special celebration today will include the Dedication of our new Green Space and Meditation area. Archbishop Gregory will bless this space and all are invited to join us in the lower parking lot immediately following the noon Mass. Our Men’s Club and Hispanic community will celebrate by serving pancakes and tacos - please join us! May we all continue to honor Christ our King as we work to know, love and serve as Jesus did. Sincerely in Christ, 2699 Peachtree Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30305 404-233-2145 www.cathedralofchristtheking.org WHAT’S INSIDE: Donate to the Christmas Decorations Page 2 Calling all Shepherds Page 5 BCM Food Drive Page 7 Joyous Toys Page 8 Senior Christmas Lunch Page 9 Welcome New Parishioners Page 9 Hispanic Pages Pages 10-11 A Glimpse of our History The Solemnity of Christ the King marks the end of the Liturgical year which starts with the First Sunday of Advent and comes to a close on our parish’s name date. The Feast of Christ the King is also special to our parish because the cornerstone for our Cathedral was blessed and laid by Bishop O’Hara on October 31, 1937, the Feast of Christ the King. On that same day, the original construction on the school building was completed. Father Moylan and the founding families of the parish showed great foresight in building so large and beautiful a church: a French Gothic architectural style of the old world, providing seating for more than seven hundred, when the parish numbered only four hundred individuals in 1937. Our parish community now numbers over 4,000 families. Our campus includes several statues depicting the Kingship of Christ. One statue appears over the Cathedral’s front doors on the façade and another stands near the entrance to Christ the King School. Thanksgiving Day Mass On Thursday, November 25, all parishioners and visitors are invited to our annual Thanksgiving Mass at 10 am in the Cathedral. Archbishop Gregory will be the principal celebrant. Please note that the only other Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 6:45 am. Note: Parish offices will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, November 24, 25 and 26. RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY The King of Life The liturgy for today’s Feast of Christ the King tells us that his is “a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom of justice, love, and peace.” Indeed, all these realities fit together perfectly. Truth and life go together, because when we know the truth about God’s love and care for creation, we will respect all life. When we know the truth about ourselves, that we belong only to God, then we realize we cannot destroy any other person. A respect for life, personally as well as in our laws and policies as a nation, is the first requirement of justice and an absolute condition of peace. And the holier we are, the more we allow God’s grace into our every thought and desire, the more we will adhere to truth, defend life, and promote justice and peace. For more information on the Respect Life Ministry, please contact [email protected].
