Fortnight for Freedom: Save the Dates The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2015, a time when our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power - St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the "freedom to bear witness" to the truth of the Gospel. This is the fourth Fortnight, which was originally instituted by the U.S. Bishops in 2012. The Fortnight for Freedom is a response to the U.S. Bishops’ call to fourteen days of prayer, education, and action for religious freedom in the United States and abroad. This reading is linked to St. Mark’s Gospel that features Jesus telling the parable of the mustard seed. This seed is one of the smallest of seeds, yet grows to a plant large enough for birds to nest there. Faith in Christ, too, may start out small, but when nurtured through the Eucharist and other sacraments, prayer, and the Word of God, can grow to be very powerful. We, as faith-filled stewards, know that as our discipleship in Christ grows, so, too, does our stewardship obligation in building the kingdom of God.
