Father Bitrus Maigamo is with us for the month of September. Father Maigamo, tell us about where you are from and your family life... I am Rev. Fr. Bitrus Teneu Maigamo. I hail from Kaduna State, the North Central of Nigeria, West Africa. I was born to the family of Zachariah Maigamo and Elizabeth Nchepteh. I have five brothers and no sister. I am the last in position out of the six children of my parents. When did you first sense that God was calling you to the priesthood? I started sensing the call of God while I was in the Minor Seminary when my people back at home had started calling me “Little Father”. The desire to become a Catholic priest increased when I was half way in my training, but mingling with other friends, prior to my completion, there arose the desire of becoming a chemical engineer, nuclear physicist or computer engineer. This distraction as I may describe it kept on lingering for a little while up to the time of my final year in the training as a junior seminarian. Nonetheless, having successfully completed the training I finally proceeded to the Senior Seminary after a year of mourning for the death of my father. Are you from a Diocese in Nigeria or a religious community? While in the Major Seminary, I was admitted into the Archdiocese of Kaduna. There I continued with my training of both philosophy and theology. On my completion, I was ordained a transitional deacon under the Archdiocese of Kaduna along side with eleven colleagues of mine. While as a deacon, the diocese of Zaria was carved out of the archdiocese of Kaduna thereafter I opted for the new diocese. I was thus ordained for the diocese of Zaria along side with my classmate as its first candidates on August 11, 2001 in the Christ the King Cathedral, Zaria Diocese of Kaduna State, Nigeria in West Africa. What is your current work as a priest? (What are you studying in Rome?) Since my ordination, I was given the first canonical assignment as the Vice Rector of my alma mater (St. Joseph Minor Seminary Zaria) and a Parochial Vicar of St. Endas Catholic Parish located within the Seminary. After five years of working experiences, I was made a Pastor of a new erected Parish of St. Anne Catholic Church Zangon Tama II at the same time the Director of Communications of the Diocese. From there, I was sent to Rome after five years to study Missiology in the Gregorian University, in order to prepare me for the task of a formator in the Kaduna Provincial seminary known as Good Shepherd Major Seminary located within the metropolis of Kaduna. Having completed my licentiate in missiology, I proceeded for my doctoral studies. I am presently doing my PhD dissertation on Islamic Extremism a Challenge to the Catholic Missionary Activity in Northern Nigeria since 1999: A Missilogical Study. Thereafter, upon completion I hope to return back to Nigeria and teach in the above mentioned Major Seminary. What do you like about being in the United States of America? While in America, I enjoy the general spirit of the freedom to prove one’s worth as it is a land of opportunities. Is there something you want to say to encourage the families and people of Christ the King? I want to use this opportunity to encourage the parishioners of Christ the King to continue with the Spirit of togetherness and the support of one another. They should always keep the flame of the faith alive no matter how tough and difficult life becomes because our God will never abandon them. I must admit that the Christ the King parishioners are welcoming and open minded people ready to identify themselves with new comers. It is my prayer that God will continue to keep them together as a family as they journey together so that one day we shall all see Him face to face as He is without the loss of any member. Perpetual Adoration There are wonderful stories of parishioners who became hourly adorers at Christ the King. Father Steve once asked a brother who led several ministries within the parish why he was not an adorer. He said, Father, I am just too busy. There is no time in my day. Father asked if he had thought of taking an early morning hour, such as 2 or 3 am. The parishioner hardly knew how to respond. He said, okay, I’ll try it for a month. Five years later he still faithfully keeps that hour. Something happens inside you when you humble yourself to spend an hour with Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.
