The Immaculate Heart Of Mary - Cathedral of Christ the King
August 3, 2014
Eighteenth Sunday in ordinary time
The Immaculate Heart Of Mary
Since the 16th century Catholic piety has assigned
entire months to special devotions. The month of
August is traditionally dedicated to the Immaculate
Heart of Mary. The Immaculate Heart is often
venerated together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Just
as the Sacred Heart represents Christ's love for
mankind, the Immaculate Heart represents the Blessed
Virgin's desire to lead all people to Christ.

When the our diocese was formed it was dedicated to
the patronage of The Immaculate Heart of Mary and St.
Pius X and a Diocese of Atlanta Window was
created. This window, located in the parish lobby,
commemorates the creation of Diocese of Atlanta.
Established in 1956 when the northern 71 counties of
Georgia were separated from the Diocese of Savannah,
the Atlanta Diocese was dedicated to the dual
Patronage of Saint Pius X and the Immaculate Heart of
Mary, and was placed in the care of Bishop Francis E.
Hyland.
In the uppermost image, we find the coat of arms of patron Pope Pius X,
whose papacy was from 1903-1914, and whose canonization occurred shortly
before the establishment of the Diocese of Atlanta. The Papal shield, Papal
tiara, and keys are present, symbolizing the authority of the Holy See. The
winged lion of Saint Mark the Evangelist supports the shield. Inside, the
superior image shows the arms of the Patriarch of Venice, a position Bishop
Sarto held from 1893-1903, before his elevation to the Papacy. Below, we
find the arms of the Bishop of Mantua, another post held by Bishop Sarto.
The center image of the window is a beautiful rendition of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary, patroness of the Diocese. Pierced by the sword of suffering
and draped in a regal garland of red roses, the Immaculate Heart is on fire
with love for the Father and the Son. Springing from the heart is a sprig of
Annunciation lilies, calling to mind the purity of Mary, and her graceful
acceptance of God’s will.
Below the symbols of the dual patrons, we find the coat of arms of Bishop
Francis E. Hyland, Atlanta's Bishop from 1956-1961. The left side of his
shield shows the newly created coat of arms of the Diocese. A Cherokee Rose
(the state flower of Georgia) and a crown symbolize that Christ the King is the
seat, or cathedra, of the Bishop's teaching and authority. The right side of the
shield bears Bishop Hyland's personal arms. Beneath all, the scroll reads, "Ad
Jesum Per Mariam," translated: "To Jesus through Mary."

Life teen summer trips
Life Teen Leadership Conference
This summer CTK Life Teen took 6 of our teen
leaders to the Life Teen Leadership Conference
held at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS. This
week long conference focused on first forming
these teens as disciples and equipping them with
the practical skills they need to transform their
homes, schools, parish, and community. Coming
home from the trip, our teens have already begun
to put their experience into action.
“Coming home from LTLC,
my goal is to use the skills I
learned and passion I gained to be a light of Christ in the
world so I can help others in their faith while continuing to
grow in my own.” Katie Reteneller, Sr., Marist
“My mission coming home is to grow in my faith as I help
others realize and cultivate their own.” – Joe Reigner, Jr., St.
Pius X High School
Life Teen Summer Mission
In early July, CTK Life Teen also sent 18 on mission to
Ashland, MT where we served the community of the North
Cheyenne Indian Reservation. Work projects ranged from
building decks and wheelchair ramps, to basic home
improvement projects, to working with and visiting the
elderly and underprivileged children. Mornings and
evenings were spent at Mass, growing in community, and
diving deeper into our own faith. Coming home from this experience we asked
the teens what they were taking home with them and leaving
behind. Here are a few of their thoughts:
“I’m taking with me an appreciation for the blessings I have
and an understanding that not everyone has the simple comforts of life like running water.” - Hank Assaf, Sr., Pace
Academy
“I’m
leaving
behind
stereotypes of Native
Americans I had thought.” –
Ronan Lehane, Freshman,
Galloway
“I’m taking away the fact that
service starts in the small
things. We can serve through
a smile and a small gesture of
kindness.” – Sarah Catherine Welch

Summertime Stress Slowing You Down?
a
We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts,
struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Difficulties may seem even
worse during the summer because everyone else is enjoying life while you are
feeling down. If you are experiencing a difficult time--emotionally, spiritually, or
relationally--you don't have to suffer alone. Stephen Ministers are ready to listen,
care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one
Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. It's free and
it’s confidential. It will make a difference in your life!
Contact: Linda Dyson, 404-267-3675.
Neighborhood Mass and Pot Luck Dinner
This ministry is to gather parishioners in their neighborhoods for Mass on a
Wednesday night at 6:30 pm with a pot luck dinner following. Coordinators are
needed to schedule these Masses with their neighborhood location, advertise them
with families in the neighborhood area, and coordinate the pot luck dinner.
Contact: Jan Riser, 404-267-3674, [email protected].
Funeral Reception Committee
The Funeral Reception Committee provides hospitality for families who ask to
have a reception following their loved one’s funeral. We offer many opportunities
for volunteers to serve: to cook food, telephone committee or serve at the
reception. All is done on a rotation basis; recipes are provided and you will be
called only once or twice a month to volunteer. Join us to provide hospitality for
our families during a difficult time. Call Joanne Love, 404-256-1442 or

Mary at the Cathedral about 2 years ago. Once a week, I visit Catholic patients at
St. Joseph's Hospital. I bring a gift of the rosary to them. Some rosaries are made
by hand by our members and the patients are always so grateful for this gift while
they are dealing with whatever afflictions have put them in a hospital bed. Other

YOUR CATHEDRAL
PARISH FAMILY
YOUR LEGACY
In our earliest years, visionary
parishioners utilized planned giving
as a way to fulfill their hopes and
dreams for the Cathedral. For
example, one of our founding
parishioners established a charitable
trust in her will, naming the
Cathedral as beneficiary. The gift was
small at first but has grown
significantly over the decades
continuing to bless the Cathedral day
after day.
We invite you to consider a planned
gift to our Cathedral Fund as your
long term legacy. Your gift will help
support special projects and ministry
needs beyond our annual operating
expenses. A simple provision in your
will or a designation from a
retirement plan can create your
future gift .You can designate a
particular project or ministry or your
funds can be used for the general
needs of the Cathedral.
We are ready to work with you and
your advisors to develop a gift plan
that best suits your goals and
objectives.

giving opportunities, please contact

El Inmaculado Corazón de María
Desde el siglo XVI la fe Católica ha asignado meses enteros
a devociones especiales.

WELCOME FROM THE PASTOR AND
CATHEDRAL STAFF
Dear Friends in Christ,
On behalf of Archbishop Wilton Gregory, the Clergy and
staff, I welcome you to the Cathedral of Christ the King. I
hope and pray that you feel welcomed by our parish
community and that your spiritual and pastoral needs will

We are a very active parish with 5,500 families and over one
hundred ministries. We encourage our members to share

Our mission statement is to “Know, Love and Serve as Jesus

you are new, I hope and pray that you will join us and be
part of the community of Christ the King. If you are passing
through or visiting the city of Atlanta, I hope you enjoy your
worship experience and please visit us again.
If you would like to know more about our parish, you can
visit our website at www.cathedralofchristtheking.org or
email us.
May we, this day and all the days of our lives, know, love
and serve as Jesus did.
Prayers and Blessings,
Msgr. Frank McNamee, Rector
