We had a great Board meeting in Miami in November and a lot of good has come of it. Much
of the work we accomplished benefits you, the SCBA member by simplifying Whole Herd
Reporting, allowing more time for breeders to get their herds into the database at our reduced
rate, easing complications for ET calf registrations and the big issue of how to pay for multi-breed
analysis.

cosas buenas salieron de ella. Muchos beneficios para ustedes salieron de nuestro trabajo, se
simplifico para los miembros de la SCBA el Reporte Total del Hato (WHR), dando más tiempo

I am glad to report that all the above mentioned items are in process and you will find more
details throughout this issue of Senepol World. It seems like forever since the convention, but I
think you will enjoy the articles about the convention included along with an article written by
Mr. Pedro Restrepo on two Senepol conventions that occurred in November for the Colombian
Senepol Association and the Venezuelan Senepol Association. We are glad to hear how the
Senepol breed is growing throughout the world and it is exciting to be a part of that.

As part of our commitment to go to a multi-breed analysis, SCBA is going to take on a debt
from Angus Genetics Incorporated (AGI) of $10,000 and our board has a few fund raising ideas
that I think will surprise you. We need everyone’s commitment to make the multi-breed analysis a reality and so far we already have commitments and down payments to make this happen.
More details on this can be found on pages 4 & 5 in this magazine.

By the time you receive this magazine, you should have received your 2010 Whole Herd Report. Major adjustments were made in this program to get away from the confusion of 4 options
and multiple price breaks. We kept some of the price breaks, but the multiple options are gone,
going with the options that most popular options overall. With all things, we learn through trial
and error and we felt collectively as a board that this new plan was going to be easier to administer and therefore easier for you, the SCBA Member to understand.

to accept a new, simpler plan for WHR. I know for some, reading the WHR
document in it’s entirety can be less than exciting, so for you, I have created a

One of the great features about Senepol is their amazing heterosis (hybrid
vigor) when used in a cross breeding program. Currently under our new
single breed model, it is possible to get EPDs for our cross bred animals
(with one parent w/o EPDs), but a lot of different factors have to all be in
place for this to happen and therefore receiving EPDs for animals who have
parents without EPDs can be challenging under our current EPD routine.
We typically find this case with F1 and F2 crosses.

In case you are wondering what those factors are, the calves need to be
in a contemporary group with another animal and performance information
needs to be turned into SCBA for BW, WW and YW. Sounds pretty easy,
but it can be more challenging to do than you would think. To create EPDs
for animals whose parents don’t both have EPDs from AGI a lot of things
need to happen. Gender needs to be the same, management needs to be the
same example: natural service, AI (ET calves are EXCLUDED), same feed
codes for weaning, not twins, no orphans, and oh yes, the calves must be
born within 90 days of each other. Plus, for weaning, the calves must be all
weaned within the same 160-210 days, and have yearling weights within the
same 310-430 days. If you think of each of these as “tests” getting EPDs for
cross-bred calves is tricky.

Luckily for us, science has been progressing and one of the new EPD
routines available is called a multi-breed EPD. In literature received by
Dr. Sally Northcutt from Angus Genetics, Inc, we have been informed that
“a Multi-breed evaluation (MBE) allows more animals to receive EPDs“.
Additionally, Dr. Northcutt stated that “just as (SCBA’s current) analysis,
animals must still be in contemporary groups“. One of the major benefits
of a MBE is that the contemporary groups will be larger and include a larger
spectrum of % Senepol in with the full blood and purebred animals. Additionally, the accuracy of the evaluation is higher, because it does take into
account the other breed compositions and those other breed traits.

Science, Cornell University, the Multi-trait model has the following features:

our annual analysis.

for the initial set-up of the programming for this analysis. Additionally, the
cost to run the program annually will increase to $6,500/year from $5,000/
year. We are committed to this program, but funding it will require some
work on the part of our members. The board of directors met in Miami Nov
13th & 14th and spent a good deal of time discussing fund raising ideas
for this endeavor and it basically boils down to the following five options,
which we plan to execute as follows:

interested in a business card sized ad, we will also have these available at a
rate of $25 each. Please help finance the multi-breed analysis and promote
your Senepol cattle through this endeavor.

Credit - SCBA will be offering an incentive program for those breeders
who are willing to extend SCBA credit to be used towards the multi-breed
analysis. The program works as follows:

• As an incentive for breeders to extend a loan to SCBA, SCBA will give
a 5% discount on WHR cost over the next 3 fiscal periods. Advancement of
credit can be received from an individual breeder, a state association or an
international association.
• Como un incentivo a los criadores que den préstamo a la SCBA, SCBA
dará un descuento del 5% en el costo del Reporte Total del Hato (WHR)
durante los próximos 3 periodos fiscales. Adelantos por crédito puede

• The minimum promissory note is to be $500 or greater for an individual
or $2,500 or greater for a State/International Association to be eligible for
the discount. The credit can be used on any SCBA service (membership,

of the total credit received. Any balance not used after three years is considered a contribution and will not be refunded.

Donated Semen Sale - Breeders are asked to donate already collected
semen that is now ready for sale. A listing of the semen available will be
published in our next issue of Senepol World. All the proceeds go directly
to SCBA. Please note whether your Semen is available for international
export and the location of the semen (farm tank, Genex, or other Semen
storage location). A more complete explanation of this program is listed on
page 3 of this magazine.

Collected Semen Sale - In this program we have some buyers who are
willing to pay for the transportation, storage, housing, shipping and collection costs plus $3/straw for Senepol semen from bulls in the United States
so long as the owner of the bulls have insurance on the bulls and are willing
to loan their bull to Genex for a period of 3-6 months until 300-500 straws
of semen can be collected. The buyers for this semen have asked that those
owners who are willing to loan their bulls for this program submit a list to
SCBA including scrotal circumference, frame score and registration number. From all the bulls who are submitted for selection 5 will be chosen for
collection by the buyers.

Returning to the birthplace of the Senepol breed, in St. Croix USVI, was
a fitting beginning to an amazing convention. For those who attended the
convention this year, you got to see first hand the environment where the
amazing Senepol breed got its roots. From the lush green tropical side
of the island located near Annaly farms WC or the drier Eastern location
which houses the cattle for the University of the Virgin Islands (CN cattle),
you can see one thing for sure, Senepol are a breed that was made for heat
tolerance, easy handling and delicious tender beef.

The convention planning started months ahead of time and took the coordinated effort of then President, Hans Lawaetz, Dr. Bob Godfrey and Ms.
Sue Lakos, both from the University of the Virgin Islands. A lot of hard
work went into the planning of this event and we appreciate everyone who
made it possible.

The following morning, the conferences began with Hans Lawaetz, with

We also had the pleasure to hear from Dr. Melvin Pagan Morales from the
University of Puerto Rico where he spoke to us about DNA research for
Senepol. Next, Dr. Chad Chase from the USDA - Subtropical Research
Station, Brooksville, FL gave us the update on the Slick hair gene. Our
morning speakers were very good and we
appreciated all they had share. We received
very good feedback from those in attendance
and many were also very appreciative of the
interpretation services which were provided
for both English and Spanish.

additional rest and relaxation while others went out to explore the island on
their own and take in the charm of St. Croix.

The following morning we started by attending to our business meeting,
election of new officers for the SCBA Board of Directors and voting on
the proposed Amendment to the SCBA by-laws. The following directors
were voted into office for the period of 2009-2012: Dr. Charles Whitworth,
Mr. Charles Conway, Mr.
Swanee Carver and Mr.
Roy Lee Strickland. Additionally, the by-law
proposal did not pass and
therefore no changes were
made.

Following the vote, Mr. Pedro Alejandro Restrepo spoke to us regarding
his cross-breeding program in Colombia. We have been very fortunate to
have Mr. Restrepo on the board of directors for the past year. His program
in Colombia evaluates Bos taurus crosses against the pure Zebu (Brahman)
in order to produce more meat in a profitable way, he found Senepol and his
crosses achieve outstanding performance over Zebu.

We then watched the presentation
from the Brazilian Senepol Association
on their promotion of Senepol cattle in
Brazil. Mr. Junior Fernandes and Sebastiao De Aguiar took turns speaking
and we viewed the presentation put together by Mr. Fernandes. The Brazilian
auction was executed very professionally and was informational, entertaining and lively through the use of video,
music and commentary. I think seeing
how other countries promote and sell
their Senepol cattle was an eye opener
and we hope to see more from Brazil in
the future.

We adjourned to the Safari buses to view the cattle owned by the University of the Virgin Islands at Estate Longford. As we have reported in previous issues of Senepol World, the Castle Nugent Senepol herd was donated
to the University of the Virgin Islands in 2006 when the Gasperi family
decided to retire from the Senepol business. We spent an hour or so looking
at the UVI cattle (CN) for sale and lunched at Estate Petronella, which was
sponsored by UVI Extension Service where we enjoyed Senepol Shish-kabobs which were made by UVI’s very own Sue Lakos and other members
of UVI with help in conjunction with Annaly Farms.

Friday evening we spent at the hotel enjoying the Caribbean flavored
entertainment and dinner. We enjoyed live music, dancing, great company
and conversation throughout the night. It was a great end to a full day and
gave people plenty of time to socialize and strike up business deals with
fellow Senepol breeders.

honored Ms. Sue Lakos with the Frits E. Lawaetz award for her outstanding
contribution to the Senepol breed. Mr. Hans Lawaetz took the opportunity to honor his long time cowboy for his excellence in service to Annaly
Farms with a new saddle and we had the honor of hearing some of the Senepol history from Mr. Donald (Hardy) D. Nelthropp, whose family started
the Senepol breed so many years ago.

And to round out the evening as we have been doing for a number of
years, The SCBA fun auction finished out the night with all proceeds going
directly to the SCBA. This fun auction brought in a total of $1,925 through
the sale of services from Genex, donations of Cruzan rum, china sets from
the Dominican Republic to hand knitted blankets to list a few. Thank you to
everyone who donated items to this auction. We really do appreciate all you
do to make the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association a successful organization.

The focus of this year’s convention is on Multi-breed Evaluations, as we are scheduled to produce our first MBE EPD’s this year.

Baton Rouge is located 1 hour away from New Orleans, LA and
would be an easy day trip for those people interested in seeing what

The 1st Venezuelan International Senepol Breeders Convention and Annual Sales is the first event for this breed of this magnitude carried out in Venezuela. It took place in the city of Zaraza,
Guarico State, on the 20th and 21st of November.

Raza Senepol en Venezuela es el primer evento de la raza de esta
magnitud que se realiza allí. Se celebro en la ciudad de Zaraza,
Estado de Guarico los días 20 y 21 de noviembre.
According to Mrs. Beatriz Guzman de Diaz (Venezuelan
breeder and President of the Venezuelan Association), “the assisstance to the Conference was of 94 people, divided as follows: 14
members, 15 students (the local university was in vacations), 23
invited guests (Directors of the assossiation where the Conference
took place, Presidents of other associations, technitians that support Asosenepol…), and 42 profesionals and breeders”.

“la asistencia a la Conferencia fue de 94 personas que se divide
como sigue: 14 Socios, 15 Estudiantes (la Universidad local
estaba en periodo de vacaciones), 23 Invitados (Directores de la
Asociación donde fue la Conferencia, Presidentes de otras
Asociaciones, Técnicos que apoyan a Asosenepol...), Profesionales
y Productores 42”.
The conferences were given throughout the whole first day
and treated to a wide variety of topics such as the registering of
animals (Engineer Octavio Martinez, Venezuela), evaluations and
genetic improvement (Ph.D. Gonzalo Martinez, Venezuela), influence of the short hair gene (Ph.D. Timothy Olson, USA), the Composites (Ph.D. Jorge Ordonez, Venezuela), interbreeds with Senepol in Colombia (MBA Pedro A. Restrepo, Colombia), evaluation
of reproducers (MSc Atilio Atencio), the Senepol in Puerto Rico
(Ph.D. Danilo Cianzo, Uruguay), as well as the presentation of an
investigation about the quality of the Senepol crossbreeds meat.

versaron sobre muchos tópicos como registro de animales
(Ingeniero Octavio Martínez, Venezuela), evaluaciones y
mejoramiento genético (Ph. D Gonzalo Martínez, Venezuela),

Compuestos (Ph. D Jorge Ordonez, Venezuela), Cruces con
Senepol en Colombia (MBA Pedro A Restrepo, Colombia),

un trabajo de investigación sobre la calidad cárnica del Senepol

Pedro Alejandro Restrepo, as member of the Board of Directors of the SCBA, granted an interview for the show “Agrotendencia” in national television, which was aired on December 6th,
where the Senepol breed in the Lower Tropic and its benefits as a
pure breed, as well as interbred, were emphasized.

On November 21st, the agricultural farm “La Estrella” was
visited in order to observe pure Senepol cattle grazing. This was
followed with the annual sale that, according to Mrs. Beatriz, had
the following results: “In the sale there were 46 registered animals,
of which one was not shown in the auction. These were composed
of 20 pure females (calved and/or pregnant), 14 pure males, and 12
females in absortion that had to be pregnant or calved of females.
After the sale, six females in absorption and four pure males were
negotiated. Lucrecia kept count very well.”
El día 21 se visitó una finca de Agropecuaria La Estrella para
observar animales Senepol puros en pastoreo y en luego se realizo
la venta anual con los siguientes resultados igualmente informados
por la Sra. Beatriz: “En la venta había 46 animales inscritos de los
cuales uno no salió a Subasta. De los 45 había 20 hembras puras,
paridas y/o preñadas y algunas paridas y preñadas, 14 machos
puros y 12 hembras en absorción que tenían que estar preñadas o
paridas de hembra. Se negociaron después de la Venta 6 hembras
en absorción y cuatro machos puros. Lucrecia llevó la cuenta muy
bien”.
As expressed textually by Mrs. Beatriz (current President of
Asosenepol in Venezuela), “The main message that we wanted to
convey, and at which I think we were successful at, was that the
breed can be very good, but that if we do not keep data and registrations properly not much can be accomplished and could possibly
lead to a loss of time and money.”

The First International Convention of SENEPOL and its interbreeds
cattle breeders took place in the district of Llano Grande in the municipality of
Rionegro (Antioquia), near Medellin on November 21st and 22nd, 2009.

This event was of great importance since it brought together more than
200 attendees consisting of cattle breeders, students (12) and foreigners (6)
that made part of the academic (85) and commercial events, as well as the
Panamanian cattle breeders Association and some Venezuelan cattle breeders.
Este evento fue de gran importancia ya que congrego más de 200 asistentes entre ganaderos, estudiantes (12) y extranjeros (6), que hicieron parte
del evento académico (85) y comercial, además de la asistencia de criadores

In this important Convention, the genetic quality of the SENEPOL breed
presented in our country was evidenced by an excellent exhibition, where
breeder from all over Colombia showed their best animals and service offerings. Breeders from Cundinamarca, Llanos Orientales, Tolima, Córdoba, and
Antioquia took part in this exhibition, which consisted of sixty-nine pure cattle
and sixty-nine crossed cattle. Furthermore, different SENEPOL crossed animals were exhibited, such as SENEPOL x Angus, SENEPOL x Brahman, SENEPOL x Angus x Brahman (SAC), and recipients pregnant with SENEPOL
embryos, portraying the virtues and productivity of the SENEPOL breed in the
Colombian tropic.
En tan importante encuentro se apreció la calidad genética de la raza SENEPOL que hay en nuestro país con una excelente exhibición de las diferentes
ganaderías de Cundinamarca, Llanos Orientales, Tolima, Córdoba, Sur, Norte
y Oriente Antioqueño, donde cada criador dio a conocer sus mejores animales y sus servicios a prestar; se exhibieron 69 animales puros y 69 animales
cruzados; se dieron a conocer los diferentes cruces con SENEPOL como

The Convention attracted a great number of cattle breeders interested in
the SENEPOL breed, where they had the opportunity to attend, participate,
and acquire high genetic cattle for their herds in an auction of pure and crossed
animals. A total of eighteen lots of pure cattle, half females and half male, and
six pregnant recipients were auctioned.
La feria atrajo a un gran número de ganaderos interesados en la raza
SENEPOL donde tuvieron la oportunidad de presenciar, participar y adquirir
una alta genética para sus ganaderías en un remate de animales puros y cruzados con un total de 18 lotes, en donde la mitad fueron hembras puras y la
otra mitad machos puros y además seis receptoras preñadas.
It was of great satisfaction and pride having participated in this event and
contributing to the success of the First International Colombian SENEPOL
Convention, since the results of the dedication and effort that has been maintained during so many years by the Breeders became evident. The importance
of implementing this breed in Colombia also became evident, for it was shown
as a great tool for improving our herds, providing them with greater adaptability and, thus, greater
productivity.

Super Cows Announced
The job description for an ideal Senepol cow could be as follows:
She should produce a healthy, growthy calf every year; she should
calve as a two-year-old, and she should cause her owner absolutely no
problems. These ideal cows are recognized as SCBA Super Cows. A
Super Cow is the standard by which all Senepol cows can be judged.
The SCBA Board of Directors have modified these requirements from
the previous years at the board meeting in Nov 2009. The requirements
for a super cow have been made easier, and because of this change the
Super Cow status will no longer be printed on the registration papers,
but they will be printed in Senepol World magazine annually.
In order to be honored as a Super Cow, a cow must have done the
following:
1) Produced at least 3 calves
2) Had her second calf by age 50 months old
3) Maintained a calving interval of 380 days after the 2nd calf
4) Every calf must have a weaning weight record to SCBA
with at least two contemporaries
5) Had a progeny average 205-day adjusted weaning
weight ratio of at least 102.
There are three levels of Super Cows, with the only difference
being the number of calves produced. A Maternal Excellence Super
Cow must have weaned at least three calves. A Maternal Superior
Super cow must have weaned at least five calves. The most difficult
level to reach, Maternal Elite, must have weaned at least 7 calves and
maintained all the criteria listed above.
These are the cows that meet the highest standards of commercial
cattle production. The cow must do her job, but also her owner must
manage the herd correctly to give her the opportunity to excel. Only
a small portion of active cows are recognized. All heifers have the
potential of being Super Cows, but only a small percentage fit the job
description of an ideal cow yearling and year out. The following is a
list of this year's Senepol Super Cows. I would also like to include their
pedigree next to the EPDs, not sure how to get this to all fit and look
good, but I trust you to use your good judgment.
