So now the City’s Solid Waste department has decided to discontinue bulk trash pickup. 4 The end of regular Bulk
regularly scheduled bulk trash pick up is perhaps the one thing that keeps Garfield from Trash pick up? Does this
becoming a trash heap. Keep in mind, they recently cut in half the number of regular make sense when 60%
trash pickups, and now they are planning on discontinuing bulk trash pickup all together.
of homes in Garfield
They claim that they can come pick up everyone’s pile “on-demand” at random intervals
cheaper than going through the entire neighborhood on set quarterly dates and cleaning have absent landlords?
up the entire neighborhood at once (of course we all occasional ‘forget’- though dates mailed in your water bill). With
“random 4 ‘free‘ calls per year,” piles will be generated with no one able to call for pick up since most properties are
absentee landlords. It seems illogical for Solid Waste to set us up for the likelihood of trashing out our neighborhoods
like this. While it’s another City Department, we could look for input from a more hands-on Neighborhood Services
Department to intervene on our behalf, requesting a reconsideration of this uncontained trash strategy.
If implemented the less-responsible absentee landlords will have trash piling up high and never call. NSD Enforcement
will be costly and SLOW. Already numbers of residents create piles of trash at non-“uncontained” bulk pickup times,
and by the time NPO enforcement proceeding can have effect the next quarterly pickup comes around. So now it’s
up to the good residents to police the issue and constantly harp, beg and plead for enforcement. Meanwhile, our
neighbors in Tempe, Scottsdale and Peoria get this service MONTHLY. This has proven to be the best way to maintain
removal of blight. But now let’s trash out the neighborhoods because Solid Waste is feeding us the line that this is
more “green.” I’d like to suggest we be more pro-active as a Neighborhood Association and ask our District 8 Council
Office to respond to our concerns. [email protected]

We would like to invite Garfield neighbors
to join us on nextdoor.com, a new social
site designed specifically as a neighbor to
neighbor community-builder. They’ve made
presentations to our Redevelopment and Economic Development Committee
(you’re always welcome), and we reviewed their origins and intentions. It’s a social site
much like facebook, myspace or Google+ however the difference is, all neighbors/
users/participants are vetted Garfield residents. Singing up requires verification
of residency within Garfield (you see only cross-streets). No outsiders permitted.
No developer or person living in Tempe can chime in on our conversation. We can
however, view what issues are in neighboring hoods that have joined nextdoor.
com; such as Willow & Coronado. Besides a great way to post lost puppy or found
puppy, Nextdoor.com is greater at focusing on solutions to stolen bikes or cases
of serial vandalism or graffiti, or street lights out, because you know you’re only
talking to neighbors. Recently the independent Garfield Historic District Phoenix
Facebook group had quite a discussion over a group of problematic juveniles; and
snarky exchanges. We believe nextdoor.com will be a better platform for Garfield
residents to have helpful discussions. Yes there will be differences of opinion, but
assuming we can all be civil, we’ll focus on the common denominators that bind us
together as a community of different cultures and characters. Nextdoor.com
Hello, this is Phoenix Chief of Police Daniel V. Garcia, and I am
pleased to announce that starting today the City of Phoenix
Police Department will be using Nextdoor in an effort to facilitate
virtual neighborhood watches and help foster neighbor-toneighbor and police-to-resident communication.
Nextdoor is a tool for us to effectively share crime prevention and
safety updates, free events, and emergency notifications. You
can expect to receive crime and safety updates from the Phoenix
Police Department on Nextdoor specific to your neighborhood.
Information is empowering! Providing you with vital information
relative to your neighborhood is extremely important to me and
to Phoenix officers. Policing is not the sole responsibility of the Chief Garcia meeting in Garfield with residents.
police, but rather a shared responsibility between the police and
the entire community.
As a reminder, calling 911 should remain your priority to request emergency services, to report criminal or suspicious activity, file police reports, etc.
We look forward to using Nextdoor to build stronger, safer neighborhoods throughout Phoenix.
Visit www.nextdoor.com for details.
GRAFFITI
It is a sign of urban decay. It generates fear of neighborhood
crime and instability. It is costly, destructive and sends a message that the community is not concerned about the appearance of its neighborhoods. And, it’s against the law!
Residents can take control of their neighborhoods by quickly
removing graffiti. Prompt removal reduces the chance of graffiti reappearing, and it helps maintain a safe, secure and attractive environment.

Garfield Resident’s Community Garden
Every 2nd Sunday of the month is the monthly garden
meeting day. We’ll be meeting at the garden at 3 pm. It’s in
the lot west of 1122 E. Garfield Street. Come by and see what
we’re growing!
We’re also making plans to reconfigure the west side of the
garden with help from Master Gardener Zuri Rowland and
build some raised beds in the front (there is a conduit that
runs underground in the front area, so in-ground beds won’t
work). We’ll be having work days for that on the Saturdays in
February - more info on that to come, but if you could plan
to come help from 9 to noon on one or more days (February
1, 8, and 15), that would be great!

What your neighbors have to say about Face to Face meetings, on Facebook.
“Great meeting tonight in the Garfield neighborhood got to see some people I have not seen in a while and also got to
meet some new faces. Sometimes technology makes us more dependant on computer interaction and less interaction
takes place among humans. In a nutshell if your work schedule permits and don’t have family commitments etc and
can attend try and can the meeting tomorrow at 5:30pm. I think anyone who attends will enjoy the meeting. It is much
more enjoyable than being behind the computer and everyone is super friendly. So put the computer down you little
Rascals and attend!!!!” Neighbor to Neighbor, Jonathan Ghione
Another Neighbor said, “I absolutely had such a great experience at the meeting yesterday. I was so motivated by
everybody’s passion! I really want to get involved as much as possible. I feel like I could contribute and provide some
new insight. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help out.”
