One of the best ways is to LIGHT UP your front porch and back yard. Buy inexpensive and long-lasting compact fluorescent bulbs and just screw them into existing light fixtures. Remember to turn them on every night, or better, keep them on 24/7 (then you won’t forget - and have an inviting darkness for thieves). The investment of a few cents electricity will light up your yard and keep the low-life thieves away. YOUTH HOSTEL IN GARFIELD By Mary Stephens Hi neighbors, I’m Mary Stephens, Phoenix Youth Hostel's newest owner. I’d like to outline our enthusiastic community outreach projects in Garfield neighborhood. The Youth Hostel is located at 1026, N 9th St, 602.254.9803, phxhostel.org. Our mission is to promote education, goodwill and cultural exchange through travel. CREATIVE NEIGHBORS HOUSES POPPING-UP Many homes in Garfield are being restored by a growing number of new neighbors; artists, ASU students and faculty. Verano | Summer, 2012 Community policing, new police chief key to keeping neighborhoods safe A Message from Mayor Greg Stanton The diversity of Phoenix is one of its greatest strengths. Each neighborhood, regardless of its location within the city, deserves equal protection and attention from the Phoenix Police Department.. Residents should feel that they can count on police, no matter what part of town they live in. Our new Police Chief, Daniel V. Garcia, will make it happen. Chief Garcia is a welcome development for our city as he brings with him 34 years of experience as a veteran of the Dallas Police Department.. and associations. He has served on the front lines of policing for many years, and has worked in various assignments, uniformed and “plain-clothed.” He also has been active in his community with the Dallas Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and multiple other community boards Most importantly, Chief Garcia has a staunch passion for protecting Phoenix residents and a strong background in community-policing. As Mayor, I hold the Phoenix Police Department to the highest of standards and I can confidently say that Police Chief Garcia shares a similar mindset. The safety and security of the City of Phoenix is much more than rhetoric; it is a fundamental commitment to each and every Phoenix resident. Phoenix is fortunate to count on approximately 3,100 sworn officers to help ensure the safety of Phoenix residents across all neighborhoods of the city. Under the direction of a strong and committed leader, our police department will continue to serve and protect our residents both through crime prevention measures and collaborative initiatives. By fostering the exchange of ideas and encouraging a close alliance, residents and the Phoenix Police Department will both benefit from an increased measure of trust and security in the safety of the city. Through community policing efforts, the best police force in the country, the Phoenix Police Department, will continue to improve and seek to protect the safety of each and every Phoenix resident. As Mayor the safety of our residents, families and children is my top priority. I encourage you to share your ideas and concerns with my office at any time. Please contact me in the following ways: E-mail: [email protected], or Facebook: facebook.com/mayorstanton, or Twitter: @mayorstanton Police Chief Garcia ¡Thank You Chief! Verano | Summer, 2012 Phoenix PD partners with Garfield Elementary and Junior Achievement By Commander Louis Tovar During the spring semester of 2012, I reached out to Garfield School Principal, Dr. Teresa Covarrubias, about an opportunity to initiate a partnership between the school and Central City Precinct that brings uniformed police officers into a positive classroom. As a Central Board Member of Junior Achievement (J.A.) of Arizona for over 12 years, I offered an opportunity for precinct patrol officers to “volunteer” to deliver the Junior Achievement curriculum in the classrooms. J.A. is a non-profit organization that educates and inspires young people to value citizenship, free enterprise, business and economics to improve the quality of their lives. This mission is carried out by partnering with organizations such as ours that provide volunteers to be role models and teach the curriculum. Once Dr. Covarrubias accepted to participate, I solicited 12 volunteers within the precinct. This Spring, volunteer officers were “matched” with 12 different classroom teachers to begin their partnership. Each officer committed 5 - 6 classroom visits lasting 35-45 minutes, depending on the grade level. Many teachers rearranged their schedule in order to minimize disruption to their normal duties and all were supported by their supervisor to “teach” their class on duty. Volunteer Officers included: Sergeant Juan Hernandez, Officer Sean Muniz, Sergeant Mark Tovar, Luis Samudio, Mario Ancich (CAO), Erick Trevino, Chris Hendershott, Valerie Whitchurch, Ashley Irvin, Doreena Wiegert, Andrew Miller, and Elliott Williams. In summary, every officer reported a very rewarding experience that was equally shared by Dr. Covarrubias and the staff of Garfield School. This initial group of officers initiated an outstanding opportunity to positively forge new relationships with kids in a precinct inner city neighborhood. In addition, this program perfectly aligned itself with recommendations of the Phoenix Community Engagement and Outreach Task Force, which states: “Encourage partnerships between precinct officers and schools, community colleges, and universities.” Officer Doreena Wiegert in with Mrs. Castro's 2nd graders GARFIELD LAW ENFORCEMENT & COMMUNITY MEETING: Last Wed of Every Month, at Lupe Sisneros Safe Haven, 1029 E Garfield St. El Departamento de Policia de Phoenix, asociado con la Escuela Elemental Garfield y el Junior Achievement. Los Oficiales Voluntarios inlcuyen a: Sargento Juan Hernandez, Oficial Sean Muniz, Sargento Mark Tovar, Luis Samudio, Mario Ancich (CAO), Erick Trevino, Chris Hendershott, Valerie Whitchurch, Ashley Irvin, Doreena Wiegert, Andrew Miller, and Elliott Williams. Verano | Summer, 2012 Alwun House: where arts and community meet Earth Day Celebration on Alwun House stage and gardens Garfield’s centennial landmark, Alwun House arts center, is a cozy neighborhood gathering place, as you may know. Located in the heart of Garfield, at 12th Street and Roosevelt, it’s Downtown’s first gallery, coffeehouse, and multicultural, intramedia performance space. Folks say they nurtured today’s thriving downtown arts district. Alwun (“all-one”) House got noticed for being unique as a neighborhood cultural resource, that engages art into neighborhood revitalization strategies. They believe art has the power to strengthen and transform community. Pictured above, Earth Day special event. Currently, Alwun House Foundation is trailblazing development of a visionary, “Green Art Park.” A vibrant sustainable urban oasis that is: Green with healing trees, vines and community garden; Art-filled with sculpture and murals; and a multi-use Park for community gatherings. After a two-year long planning process with neighbors and City Planning. Phoenix City Council unanimously approved our plans to, “building something beautifully multipurposed for our neighbors, community and House,” according to Kim Moody, Garfield native and founding Alwun House director. An early image giving a rough idea of Green Art Park space, on 12th Street. Verano | Summer, 2012 Verde Park by Henry Valencia, Park Activities Coordinator Our teens of Verde Park have had a busy Spring: with our teen flag football and basketball teams winning the high school championship title. The high school girls basketball team came in second place. The seniors have been busy this spring with field trips and meeting at the park three days a week. Something which is big this Summer is co-ed adult sand volleyball and draws quite a lot of community participants and spectators. The 17th annual teen and young adult basketball league is going strong in spite of the heat - in fact I would say they’re the hottest league in the city. Sergio Parra’s ballet folklorico dance group has been busy this past Spring with performances throughout the city and will be participating in more performances this Summer and Fall. I would like to mention that attendance at the park is very high with families and youth involved with soccer and basketball. There’s free swimming at Coronado Park Pool (on 12th St, N of McDowell), for children under 18 years of age, $5 adults. NOTICE: Trash Collection Reduced to One Day, New Schedule starts, July 9.
