Summer is just here and we’ve put together a few tips to keep your gardens going through the hot months: • If you have not yet started your garden, now is not the time to start from seeds. Start your garden with seedlings (small plants) instead, but start planting now because the summer heat is not nice to un-established plants. • At this time of the season it is late but still possible to plant cucumbers, melons, corn, tomatoes and some varieties of peppers. • Hydration is very important this time of year. Make sure your plants are getting plenty of water. In the community garden, we have had to increase our watering to two times per day for 45 min using a drip irrigation system. As it gets even warmer, fruit bearing trees and shrubs should be watered every other day. We have had some exciting developments in our Garfield Community Garden! Welcome Diner’s community garden plot has started to produce some veggies for their restaurant. Now you can enjoy great locally raised food from our very own Community Garden. We have also teamed up with Verde Park’s Teen Council to teach our youth the ins and outs of gardening. We decided on a “salsa” garden theme and look forward to a great harvest that the teens can share with their families. If you have any questions or are interested in becoming a part of our Garfield Community Garden, please contact us at [email protected]. Happy Gardening! Puente Human Rights Movement, is a grassroots, base-building migrant justice organization in Garfield aiming to develop, educate, and empower migrant communities to enhance the quality of life of our community members. Formed in response to attacks towards the day laborer community at hands of the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office in 2007. Since then they have made a priority of building an organization that is comprised of the people most impacted by antiimmigrant policies and their allies. Their leadership and base is migrant people, undocumented and formerly undocumented people, people from mixed immigration status families, multigenerational and people of color who are threatened every day with racial profiling. Exposing the issues with current immigration policy through personal narratives is at the center of any strategy or tactic used within their work. Puente is conducting a survey in the Garfield Neighborhood, to better understand issues of concern in a way that is representative of the community as a whole. If you are interested in learning more about Puente’s programs and activities or participating in the community survey, please contact [email protected] or call 602-579-2879.
