MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we enter into February, we are in a countdown mode to the start of
testing season. The state evaluation of our school will be determined, in
Brian Mangan
large part, on how well our students perform on this upcoming series of
Assistant Principals tests. The school grade is broken into two major areas.

Vision
To become a world-class
provider of
academic, career, and
technical education.
The first of the two major high school categories focus on the student
performance on the FCAT and the EOC’s. This includes 9th and tenth
grade performance in Reading, Algebra I, Geometry, Writing, and Biology.
These content areas are further evaluated by Race To The Top sub-groups
and their Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO). While there are a number
of AMO sub-groups, East Lee County High School has sufficient numbers
to register in Students with Disabilities, African-American Students,
Hispanic Students, and Free/Reduced Lunch sub-groups. All high schools
are additionally evaluated on the performance of the students that make up
the lowest quartile of the entire academic population that takes the FCAT
and EOC’s.
(story continued on page 2)
Mission
To provide a relevant and
rigorous learning
environment that will
prepare all students to
reach their highest
academic potential and
success in their career
endeavors.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL...continued
Furthermore all high schools are also evaluated on the total number of students meeting or exceeding
the standards in the content areas. Please be aware that with the ongoing implementation of the End of
Course exams, the rubric for scoring and evaluation will change this year and for several more years
ahead.
The second of the two major high school categories focus on the school and student performance is
Graduation Rate, At-Risk Graduation Rate, Accelerated Participation, Accelerated Performance, Dropout Rate, Reading Readiness, and Math Readiness. Accelerated participation and performance focuses
on students who enroll in Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment and Industry Certification
classes and how well they perform. Reading and Math readiness focuses on how well our students
perform on assessments that measure student preparedness for post-secondary education. These
standards are also evolving and will be different in the scoring rubrics as we move forward.
There are several high stakes tests coming up to include the FCAT, Algebra I EOC, Geometry EOC,
Biology EOC, Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) and a host of AP tests. This is
definitely a high stakes series of events and now is the time to maintain our commitment to our mission
“To provide a relevant and rigorous learning
environment that will prepare all students to reach
their highest academic potential and success in
their career endeavors.”
Sincerely,
Brian Mangan

The Lee County School District has partnered with the WeatherBug to help ensure the safety of our athletes while they participate in outdoor school activities.
WeatherBug® (www.weatherbug.com), the leading provider of consumer and professional weather products and services and operator of
the largest weather observing and lightning network, announced today that East Lee County High School in Lehigh Acres, FL has joined the
WeatherBug Schools Program. The school has installed a new WeatherBug weather station, lightning sensor and web-based educational
software tools. The station is able to provide weather data for meteorological teams at WZVN ABC 7 and WBBH NBC 2 in Fort MyersNaples viewing area and news stations across the country, to broadcast online and on-air. The weather station will also be used to enhance the science, technology and math school curriculum using the WeatherBug Achieve program. School officials will also be notifieed
with more advanced warning of lightning and other forms of severe weather. The program will enable students at East Lee County High
School to more effectively understand the science of meteorology.
“We are excited to be bringing a WeatherBug weather station to our school, because it will help bring science to life for our students. This
weather station and software from WeatherBug will give members of the ELCHS community the opportunity to further their knowledge
about weather and climate by using current technological tools. The advanced warning of lightning and severe weather helps us to make
critical decisions with regard to the safety of our students during athletic, transportation and other outdoor activities.”
The WeatherBug broadcast partners Fort Myers-Naples, FL, WZVN ABC 7 and WBBH NBC 2, leverages the WeatherBug national network of
tracking stations to offer Fort Myers and Naples area residents the most local, up-to-the-second weather information available. Now,
WZVN/WBBH will also be able to feature neighborhood-level reports from East Lee County High School during its daily newscasts on-air
and online.
“WeatherBug is pleased to welcome the students and faculty of the East Lee County High School in Lehigh Acres, FL, as the newest members of WeatherBug Schools Program,” said Frank McCathran, Director of WeatherBug Education. “WZVN ABC 7 and WBBH NBC 2 are
strong media partners and we are delighted that a new school in the area is able to provide local weather information.”
The WeatherBug Schools Program is committed to helping protect schools and provide an engaging teaching tool for students nationwide.
The WeatherBug interactive software program, WeatherBug Achieve, enables teachers to apply real-world conditions to help teach skills
and concepts in math, science and geography. Teachers and students in K-12 have access to weather local weather conditions from any of
the 8,000 WeatherBug sites across the country. Using WeatherBug Achieve, teachers can also create customized learning activities based
