Filepicker.io: The Winning Pitch
The web-based application,
Filepicker.io, is designed to allow users
to view, manage, and work on files entirely within their browser. Currently
marketed to website and app developers, Filepicker.io acts as an abstraction
layer through which developers can
connect their new apps to their customers’ favorite third-party services.
Filepicker.io then guides the end-user
through the process of selecting a file,
authenticating any third-party services,
and creating a unique URL for the file.
Filepicker.io aspires to become
nothing short of the overarching data
layer for web and mobile applications.
More product and company information
is available at www.filepicker.io.
TJ Grad’s Team Wins MIT 100K Competition
Every year, MIT students and graduates compete for the prestigious MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Contest’s
grand prize, $100,000 in business capital. This year, out of a record 215 teams, the winner was a team founded by TJ
’10 alum and MIT computer science major Thomas Georgiou and three other MIT students. The same work gained
the team entrance to Y Combinator, a Silicon Valley accelerator that offers $150,000 to every start-up admitted, so
the foursome took their winnings and moved to Palo Alto, where they spent the first half of the summer working
feverishly toward the product’s July 12th commercial debut.
Thomas (far left), who rows for MIT’s crew team and had won previous school-wide awards for his programming
talents, is the company’s Head of Mobile and Infrastructure; Liyan Chang (second from left) is Head of Product and
User Experience; Brett van Zuiden (second from right) is the company’s CEO and Head of Web Engineering; and
Anand Dass (far right) is CFO and Head of Sales. The company already has 2,000 customers and is hiring new talent.
Thomas credits TJ’s exceptional computer science faculty with teaching him valuable lessons in real-world programming and attributes much of his current knowhow to his experience as a TJ student systems administrator.
The accomplished programmer and budding entrepreneur has these words of wisdom for TJ students: “You build a
lot of cool stuff, but once you do, be sure to tell the world about it. You never know who might be interested in what
you built.”

ALUMNI SHARE EXPERIENCES, CAREERS AT TJSTAR
&
The tjSTAR research symposium has really caught on with TJ alumni. This year marked the first time that the symposium
featured not one, but two “Words of Wisdom from TJ Alumni” panels, whose guests ran the gamut from doctors and lawyers to
researchers and engineers, and from the Class of ’89 to the Class of ’07.
Several alumni also delivered individual presentations, giving interested students the inside scoop on their chosen careers
along with plenty of advice. Three of these are featured below.
& Josh Waterfall, Ph.D., TJ ’97, who
happens to be the son of just-retired
English teacher Milde Waterfall, spoke
about his career path and the research he’s
doing in the field of cancer genomics at
the National Institutes of Health. After
studying physics and applied math at
William and Mary, Dr. Waterfall did his
graduate and post-graduate work at
Cornell in computational modeling and is
currently an NIH research fellow. He
spoke about one NIH project where he is
studying biomarkers to identify which
patients will respond to targeted therapies,
and another where he is sequencing the genomes of archived bone cancer
specimens. He also gave advice on summer internships and the graduate
and post-graduate application process, while remarking upon the growing
interdisciplinary nature of scientific research.
“Do lab work as early as possible.”
“Email me. I’m happy to talk to you about your tech
projects, about anything.”
“Pursue an internship during college. You can see if
you like the work and can make valuable connections.”
TJPARTNERSHIPFUND.ORG
! Joe Munchak, Ph.D., TJ ’02, returning for his second tjSTAR
appearance, talked about his current work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight
Center where he is designing computer algorithms for the GPM (Global
Precipitation Measurement) satellite slated for launch in 2014. He gave
students a fascinating overview of NASA’s global weather satellites, what
kinds of data each gathers, and how that data is used. Following his talk
last year, Dr. Munchak has become an invaluable resource for TJ’s
Geosystems classes, according to Geosystems teacher Jim Jarvis, who
stopped by to thank him: “He checks what we’re doing and points us to the
newest and best data. We rely on specialists like Dr. Munchak to keep us
current,” he said.
& Jason Hintz Llopis, TJ ’89, is a Producer with Disney Research, a
division of the Walt Disney Company with labs at major research
universities and in the Los Angeles area. Mr. Hintz Llopis told the
auditorium audience about various current research projects, including:
“touche,” a sensor that can turn your iPod on or its volume up simply by
sensing simple movements (or turn your TV off when you fall asleep while
watching it); “one world cinema,” which is bringing the movie theater
experience to remote parts of the developing world; and behavioral
research that aims to alleviate crowding at popular theme park attractions.
There was something for everyone in this entertaining talk, not to mention
free pens for correct answers to Disney trivia questions.

NSF DIRECTOR DELIVERS TJSTAR KEYNOTE ADDRESS
& TJ was very fortunate to have Dr. Subra Suresh, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), as our tjSTAR keynote speaker. As Dr.
Suresh explained, NSF was founded in 1950 on the premise that funding
basic research would lead to innovation, which in turn would ensure the
country’s prosperity and national security. The history of NSF has borne
NSF Director to TJ students:
out that premise. & &

country.”
& Dr. Suresh is particularly excited about the potential for “citizen science,” whereby students and others contribute to data collection and analysis from their home computers. He also told students in response to an audience question that the issue of open access to databases and publications is “very much on the minds of the senior leadership team at NSF.” His topical and interesting address,
which opened and closed with specific reference to the role he expects TJ students to play in the country’s future, was the perfect end to a special day at TJ. A 5-minute montage of the day’s events can be found at this link:

PARTNERSHIP FUND AWARDS DINNER CELEBRATES TJ STARS
The day after the Symposium, the Partnership Fund held its annual Awards Dinner at
Vienna’s Westwood Country Club. The Partnership Fund invited all of the Lab Directors,
who in turn were each asked to invite a senior from their research lab. Three of those
students spoke about their research and thanked the PF for providing the tools necessary
to make that research possible.
The evening’s keynote speaker, former astronaut and Orbital Sciences Senior Vice
President, Frank Culbertson (at right), mesmerized the audience with his first-hand
accounts of Shuttle launches, days spent on the International Space Station, and the
stories behind the amazing photographs from space that he showed us, including those he
took of the DC area on 9/11.
The PF recognized two individuals with “Tommy Awards,” named in honor of Mr.
Jefferson and given in recognition of outstanding commitment to advancing excellence in
education. The first was given to Dr. Patrick Gillevet, Professor of Environmental Science
& Policy at George Mason University, for his exceptional service as mentor and advisor to
multiple classes of TJ students (pictured below, with Dr. Evan Glazer, TJ Principal, on
left). Lisa Wu, Oceanography Lab Director, gave a heartfelt tribute that included thanks
and best wishes from several former Gillevet mentees.
The PF’s own Mark Skolnik was also awarded a “Tommy” for his
three years as Chairman of the Board of the Partnership Fund, a period
of tremendous growth in giving and participation as well as the
beginning of an exciting new chapter in TJ’s history. Everyone at the PF
and the School is happy to hear that Mark will remain actively involved
with the PF.
The crowd was treated to the latest TJ 2.0 Capital Campaign news:
Northrop Grumman’s plan to give $250,000 over five years, and the
intention of TJ’s first graduating class, the Class of ’89, to raise
$890,000 toward the renovation. At that time, Dr. Glazer asked his
fiancee, Jennifer Palazzolo, to accompany him as he announced their
pledge to donate $5,000 a year to the Capital Campaign. The
exceptional personal commitment that our Principal has made to the
future welfare of the School is something that should inspire all of us.

ALUMNI SPEAKER SERIES KICKS OFF WITH TJ ’95 GEOSCIENCES PROFESSOR
&
“Part of understanding the Earth’s future lies in the ocean depths,” said Dr. Mea Cook, TJ ’95, to more than thirty-five TJ
students, parents, and alumni at the inaugural event of TJ Alumni Association’s Speaker Series this past May. As an assistant
professor of Geosciences at Williams College, Mea studies deep-sea sediments, which she uses to reconstruct climate and ocean
circulation from the past. “The climate system is linked to the ocean and its effects on patterns of water circulation, heat exchange, and carbon dioxide changes in the atmosphere,” she continued.
&
Mea, who obtained her undergraduate
degree at Princeton and her doctorate at MIT,
drew on her research career in oceanography
and the study of prehistoric climate changes,
known as paleoceanography, to discuss how the
ocean influences greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, in the atmosphere and how we
may gain a better understanding of what the
changes in our current climate mean. Some of
Mea’s findings drew strong reactions from the
audience. In response to Mea’s prediction that
the impact of current human emissions may be
the significant reduction of coral reefs in 60
years, Ajay Batra, TJ ’95, said, “As an avid scuba
diver, that struck me hard and has encouraged
me to consider taking action to protect the
reefs for our children and their children to see.”
&
The TJ Alumni Speaker Series aims to bring alumni, parents and students together for alumni-led discussions of contemporary topics, with an emphasis on STEM fields. “TJ alumni are emerging experts in their fields, and the TJ Alumni Speaker Series
provides them an opportunity to share those important contributions with their fellow peers and determined TJ students,” said
Sonal Goda, TJ ’95, President of the TJ Alumni Association. “It’s important that we are able to provide forums like this and
connect TJ alumni with each other, as well as with the bright leaders of tomorrow studying at TJ today.”
&
“I really appreciated the perspective of a TJ alum,” said Rachel Marzen, TJ ’11. “I see where TJ prepared others in a science
I’m interested in, paleoclimate science, and what we could possibly do after we graduate.”
&
The Thomas Jefferson Alumni Association plans to continue hosting alumni speakers throughout the year. For more information about this and other alumni activities, see the alumni page of our website, tjpartnershipfund.org .

EXXONMOBIL TREATS TJ’S “CRACKERJACK” FACULTY & STAFF
&
“As we entered the stadium, we heard the last notes of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ wafting through the air. The stadium roared to life as the Nats
took to the field. Magic began moments into the game with two back-toback home runs,” wrote Derinda Weber of TJ’s Finance Office, who, along
with hundreds of TJ faculty, staff, and their friends and families, was treated
to a sell-out Nats game in early June.
&
For the second year in a row, ExxonMobil generously donated 480 tickets to the School. “TJ faculty, family, and friends were in a wonderful section of the stadium; a great location to watch the game, relax, and socialize,” Ms. Weber gushed. The Partnership Fund is delighted when our corporate partners remember our hard-working faculty and staff. Caps off to

NORTHROP GRUMMAN, EXXONMOBIL DONATIONS EXPAND
SUMMER TECH INSTITUTE’S REACH
& TJ’s Summer Middle School Tech Institute has long been known as a great STEM
camp. Its diverse offerings feature “Cool Chemistry,” “Dissection Connection,”
“Rocket Man,” and “Web Page Design,” among many others, and the faculty -- which
this summer includes ten “regular season” TJ teachers -- is terrific. Rusty Hodges,
Middle School Tech Institute Coordinator, noted that kids were begging him to add
another week to their schedule so they could take additional classes recommended by
friends. Unfortunately for the kids, the entire summer’s worth of classes had already
been sold out for weeks. (A July 27th Washington Post’s Fairfax Edition article about
the Tech Institute can be found at www.fairfaxtimes.com .)
& In past years, large numbers of interested area kids were simply unable to attend the
Tech Institute at all because the fees and transportation costs of approximately $250/
week were prohibitive for many families. In 2011, Northrop Grumman changed that
equation with a very generous $25,000 donation, which enabled 100 students to attend;
this year, the company repeated that donation.
In “Dissection Connection,” kids began
the week taking apart owl pellets,
moved onto squid dissection, and on
Friday held their culminating exercise,
dissecting and then comparing a sheep
heart with a pig’s.
& Upon hearing that there would be room this summer for more students, ExxonMobil
employees arranged to direct all funds raised from this year’s annual employee charity
golf tournament toward Middle School Tech Institute scholarships. This excellent idea
allowed another 30 scholarship students to attend.
& Your company too can “Send a Kid to Camp TJ” by donating toward Summer Middle
School Tech Institute scholarships. Corporations and individuals are also invited to
submit proposals for courses they would design and teach. For more information,
contact Rachael Estep, Partnership Fund Development Manager, at [email protected]
or 703.750.8317.
“Web Page Design” students designed
their own web pages for real or
imagined businesses.
In “Rocket Man,” kids designed, built,
and tested their own rockets. Then on
Friday, rocket after rocket shot straight
into the air and parachuted down gently
onto the football practice field.

GOOGLE SPONSORS COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOP
& Thanks to a $25,000 grant from Google Inc., TJ’s computer
science faculty hosted a week-long training workshop at the
end of June for teachers from several local jurisdictions, including a large contingent of DC public school teachers.
Google was particularly interested in including teachers from
the DC public schools because as of the 2011-2012 school year,
there were no computer science courses available to students
in that school system.
& Using a computer science text written by our own Dr. Shane
Torbert (pictured), Applied Computer Science (Springer 2012),
the class equipped teachers to present a useful introductory
programming course that would capture the imagination of,
and be accessible to, a wide range of students. The book’s instructional method, which is the same method used at TJ, engages students by using such visuals as interactive graphics and
image files and keeps them engaged by leveraging the computer’s ability to provide immediate feedback.
& Workshop participants appreciated the opportunity to
study with TJ’s renowned faculty; some even came back to
observe our summer Computer Science course in action.
& "The CS workshop at TJHSST this week has been awesome,” said Jeff Elkner, of the Arlington Career Center. He
added, “. . . It’s much more about computational thinking and
how to use computer science to solve meaningful problems
than it is about any particular programming language.”
& The Partnership Fund’s Corporate Advisory Board is currently seeking sponsorships for additional workshops on
STEM topics of interest to our corporate partners. We commend TJ’s remarkable faculty for their willingness to share
their expertise with area teachers as part of the School’s commitment to serve as a leading STEM education resource for
the region.
PF HUMANITIES PURCHASE A CLEAR WINNER
&
The teacher places the book under the
document camera, and voila . . .
The book’s text and artwork are displayed for all to see.
TJPARTNERSHIPFUND.ORG
The Partnership Fund has always
understood that important equipment
comes in many shapes and sizes, and not
every item need be used for research.
The latest purchase for the Humanities
Department is a perfect example. Donations to the PF’s “Enrichment Fund,” the
fund earmarked for non-lab use, have
made possible the $5,450 purchase of ten
document cameras, wonderful devices
that enable clear, readable displays of
text, artwork, photos, notes, transparencies, and more.
&
In science classes where the devices
were already in use this past school year,
students report that transparencies are
much clearer since the old overhead projector was replaced by the document
camera. “I can finally see the board
without having to move to the front
row,” said one delighted student. Now
those benefits will be felt throughout
TJ’s second floor as well.
SUPPORT TJ: IT’S WORTH IT!&
&
With its flexible gooseneck, features
that allow it to double as a camera, scanner, and webcam, its ability to display
video, and its portability, the document
camera is a revolutionary advance over
the bulky, low-tech overhead projectors
that TJ parents may recall from their
high-school days.
&
Dr. Denise Castaldo, Humanities
Division Manager and English Chair,
stated, “We’re very grateful to the Partnership Fund for providing us with portable, lightweight document cameras.
Teachers will be able to sign them out as
needed and can travel from classroom to
classroom with them. While they have a
number of uses, document cameras will
be particularly helpful to us when teaching writing, as students and teacher can
write, revise, and annotate on the spot
and then share that work with the entire
class.”

TJHSST Partnership Fundʼs United Way “Expense Ratio” for the 2010-2011 fiscal year is 7.78%.
We have made every effort to ensure that the Annual Fund Donor List includes everyone who contributed to the Thomas Jefferson Partnership Fund during the 2011-2012 fiscal year. (Please note that many United Way/CFC gifts are reported to us without donor information and that matching gifts are often received months after the initial gift.) Gifts received after June 30, 2012 will be recognized in our 2012-2013 Donor List. To correct any errors or omissions, please contact Rachael Estep, Development Manager, in the
Partnership Fund Office at 703.750.8317; [email protected].
