Dear Students and Parents:
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year in the Cherry Creek School District. Whether you are
a new family just beginning your educational journey, or a returning family well on your
way toward graduation, we are glad you’re here!
Cherry Creek Schools offers your children outstanding educational opportunities. Our great
neighborhood schools are staffed by outstanding classroom teachers who are dedicated to
every student’s success. In fact, our district has the third-most National Board Certified
teachers in the state.
Our schools offer a wide variety of programming designed to meet the needs of all learners.
These include Gifted and Talented Education, English Language Acquisition, STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, AVID (Advancement Via
Individual Determination), Honors and Advanced Placement courses, the International
Baccalaureate program, and numerous concurrent enrollment classes. We also offer your
children a wealth of opportunities in the arts, activities and athletics, which will help them
explore and develop new talents, make new friends and make a difference in their
community.
This is an exciting time in Cherry Creek Schools, as we continue to expand our vision of
excellence to meet the changing needs of our students and the changing demands of our
society. We are continually connecting students with new levels of technology, innovation
and preparation for the demands of the world that awaits them.
Here in Cherry Creek Schools, your children will be challenged and inspired. They will
grow as learners and leaders and become creators and innovators. With your partnership,
we will help them thrive and succeed.
We are ready for you – from our new kindergarteners in the class of 2029 to our seniors in
the class of 2017, and every student in between. Here’s to a great year!
Sincerely,
Harry C. Bull, Jr.

“Success for Every Student”
July 1, 2016
Dear Parents and Students,
I would like to welcome you to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope each of you is having
an enjoyable, peaceful and restful summer. This school year Overland will be the home
for approximately 2300 students and 250 staff members. Once again, I am proud to
announce that Overland High School was selected by The Washington Post in April 2016

Additionally, we have a lot to celebrate, a Boettcher Scholar, two Gates Millennium

state ACT. I want to thank our students and parents for your continued support and
aspiration for academic excellence at Overland High School.
As we continue to embrace our vision, “Success for Every Student,” it is critical we
continue to promote academic excellence and ensure our students have the necessary life
skills to be productive in a global society. The Overland Campus is a wonderful place for

REVISED 6/6/2016
January 2016
Dear Parents of Kindergarten-12th Grade Students in Colorado Schools (School Year 2016-17):
Immunizations are an important part of our children’s and the community’s health. Colorado law requires students
attending a public, private or parochial school to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases. The
purpose of this letter is to remind parents about the need for back-to-school immunizations and to provide
immunization information. The chart on page 2 shows which vaccines are required for school attendance, along with
recommended vaccines which provide more protection against vaccine-preventable disease. There are no changes to
the vaccines required from the previous school year. It is helpful to share this letter with your child’s healthcare
provider or your local public health agency (LPHA) where your child receives immunizations.
Colorado follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
schedule. This schedule is approved by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family
Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. This is the immunization schedule which will
best protect your child from vaccine-preventable diseases and is the national standard for health care providers who
vaccinate your children. Please note: In Spring 2016, it is anticipated the Colorado Board of Health will approve a
recommendation that will require all students to receive their final doses of DTaP, Polio, MMR and Varicella (chicken
pox) vaccine before kindergarten entry and one dose of Tdap vaccine before 6th grade entry.
Starting July 1, 2016, parents/guardians seeking non-medical (religious or personal belief) exemptions for children in
kindergarten-12th grade must submit non-medical exemption forms annually. Medical exemptions only need to be
submitted once and require the signature of your child’s doctor or advanced practice nurse. To submit a non-medical
or medical exemption, go to www.colorado.gov/vaccineexemption and follow the instructions. Children with an
exemption may be kept out of school during a disease outbreak.
Parents may have questions or want more information about children’s immunizations and vaccine safety. Resources
for parents about the safety and importance of vaccines are available at: www.ImmunizeForGood.com and
www.colorado.gov/cdphe/immunization-education.
Colorado law requires schools to provide school-level immunization and exemption information to the Colorado
Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) by December 1, 2016. Immunization and exemption rates for
each school will be posted on the CDPHE website as soon as they are verified. Many parents, especially those with
children who can’t be vaccinated due to a medical issue, may want to know which schools are best protected against
vaccine preventable disease.
Please discuss your child’s vaccination needs with your child’s healthcare provider or LPHA and bring your child’s
updated immunization records to school each time your child receives an immunization. To find your LPHA or learn
about free or low cost vaccines, call the Family Health Line at 1-303-692-2229 or 1-800-688-7777. For questions about
school immunization requirements, please contact your school.

Immunization requirements will be strictly enforced for all students. Students
who do not meet the requirements will be denied attendance according to
Colorado Revised Statutes 25-4-902. There are three ways to be in compliance
with the school immunization law:
1. Student’s immunization record shows they are fully immunized with required
vaccines. A laboratory test showing immunity is also acceptable.
2. For the student who is catching up on receiving required immunizations, the
school will notify the parent/guardian that the student has 14 days to receive
the required immunization(s) or to provide written documentation of the plan to
receive the next required immunization(s) following the minimum intervals of
the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) schedule. If the plan
is not completed, the student shall be excluded from school for non-compliance.
3. Valid medical exemption signed by a healthcare provider or non-medical
exemption (religious or personal) submitted by a parent/guardian.
CDPHE tan pronto sean verificados.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
I would like to take this opportunity to acquaint you with the Cherry Creek School District’s procedures for
administering medications to students pursuant to school board policy JLCA, Student Health Services and
Requirements.
These policies are designed to ensure the safety of our students:
1. The school will have received written permission from the parent/guardian to administer the medication.
When such a request is made by a parent/guardian, a full release from the responsibilities pertaining to
side effects or other medical consequences of such medications also must be presented.
2. Medication will be administered by the school nurse, or by school personnel whom the registered nurse
has trained and delegated the task of giving such medication. (A parent is always welcome to come to the
school and administer medication to his or her own child.)
3. Medication shall be in the original, properly labeled container with the current date printed on the
container, and all other parameters required for medication administration (student name, prescribing
physician’s name, drug name, dose, route, time and/or frequency).
4. In some instances, at the high school level, students who demonstrate responsibility may be allowed to
carry their medications on their person and self-administer such medication in accordance with the current
pharmacy-labeled container, or in the case of over-the-counter medication, in accordance with the
manufacturer’s label. Students who misuse this privilege may be subject to disciplinary action per
applicable school board policies. Please contact your high school nurse for additional information.
The following guidelines shall also pertain to the administration of medication to students in the school
setting:
Rescue/Prescription medications: (Albuterol and epinephrine) should be kept in the clinic unless written
permission for a student to carry these prescription drugs has been agreed to by the physician, parent and
school nurse. This written agreement form is located in the school clinic and on the Health Services Web
page. It requires, in part, that the student has demonstrated the necessary maturity to keep it on their person.
Prescription Medications: Prescription medications require written permission for administration in the
school setting from both a healthcare provider and a parent/guardian. Most pharmacies are happy to provide
an extra labeled container so that a prescription can be divided and placed in a properly labeled container for
school use. If the dose or the directions change, a new form/container must be submitted.
Over-the-counter medications: Written parental permission is required for administration of over-thecounter medications. Since many medications resemble another in appearance, medication must be sent to
the school in the original manufacturer’s container with the label intact. If a student requires a dosage outside
the manufacturer’s recommendations, a healthcare provider’s authorization for the variation is required in
addition to the parent’s signature. Since aspirin has been associated with Reyes Syndrome when given to
children with influenza or chickenpox, medications containing aspirin may only be administered with a
healthcare provider’s and a parent/guardian’s signature.
Homeopathic/Herbal medications: These medications are not considered to be over-the-counter
medications, but require written permission for administration in the school setting by both a healthcare
provider and the student’s parent/guardian. Some homeopathic preparations may require a review from the
Cherry Creek School District Medical Advisory Board.
Transportation of medications: Parents/guardians are personally responsible for the delivery of student
medications to and from school, and should hand them directly to the nurse, building administrator, or other
school official. In the event an approved adult is unable to bring the prescription to school, that individual
shall contact the school and notify the nurse or other school official of the date the medication is to arrive,
giving the name of the medication and the exact quantity of medication included in the properly labeled
container.
Any medication sent to the school without the labeled container will be kept in the clinic or main office to be
returned to the parent. Additionally, any unused medication will be available for pickup through the end of
the school year by the parent/guardian. Any medication not picked up will be discarded. The schools will
not send unused medication home with students.
Planning ahead: It is recommended that any student requiring a medication at school or at home have a
seventy-two (72) hour supply kept in the clinic in the event of an unpredictable local emergency. Please
discuss this with your healthcare provider or the school nurse if you are wondering about your child’s need
for such an arrangement. Also, because health needs can change, all medication forms will need to be
renewed annually. They are available from your health clinic and the District web site at
cherrycreekschools.org.
Confidentiality of student records. The confidentiality of academic records are protected by the Family
Educational Rights to Privacy Act (FERPA). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) does not apply to schools or the health records maintained within the school nurse’s office.
Nursing Procedures: All medical procedures performed during child’s day at school require a “Permission
for Nursing Procedure” form to be signed by attending physician and parent/guardian. Procedures requiring
this form include but are not limited to tube feeding, tracheostomy care, suctioning and other medical
treatments. All nursing procedure forms shall be renewed annually at the beginning of the school year.
Individual Health Plans (IHP). The IHP is developed by the professional school nurse to address and
communicate the health needs of the student to school personnel with an educational interest in the student.
The IHP development and implementation by the RN allows sharing of necessary information and planning
for student health needs to maximize student access and participation in their education. All IHPs are
renewed annually at the beginning of the school year and as needed in response to a change in student health
status.
Communications with the school nurse are essential in ensuring your student’s health needs are addressed in
the school setting. If your student requires medication, nursing procedures and or an individual health plan
call your school nurse the week prior to school beginning to discuss the needs of your student.
We look forward to helping your student have a safe and healthy educational experience this year.
Sincerely,
Suzanne Oro, MSN
Director of Health Services

Dedicated to Excellence
Dear Senior and Junior Parents:
Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! For the 2016-2017 school year there will be approximately 500
parking spots open for our junior and senior students. All applications should be fully complete including
proof of insurance, valid driver’s license, and registration.
PARKING AT OVERLAND IS A PRIVILEGE – NOT A RIGHT. Students must adhere to the
Cherry Creek School District Policies and Procedures listed in the Student Conduct and Discipline,
Rights and Responsibilities booklet. Special consideration WILL NOT be given to any specific groups,
(i.e., athletic teams, performing art students, out-of-district students), or be based on the distance a student
lives from Overland High School.
Procedures for applying for a parking pass are as follows: (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY)
1. The parking pass application must be completely filled out. The application must include a copy of
your driver’s license, car registration, and proof of car insurance. All applications for parking passes
must be signed by the OHS student and his/her parent or guardian. Incomplete applications will not
be processed.
2. Applications need to be submitted on Check-in Day or delivered to the OHS Security Office for
processing.
3. Students who have unpaid fines or owe money to any department, club, or organization at OHS will
not have their applications processed until those fines are paid and cleared. If you are not sure if you
have an outstanding fine, check with the bookkeeping office (720-747-3761).
4. The cost of the OHS parking pass is $50.00. You will need to pay the $50 fee to the bookkeeper
and take the receipt to the Security Office in order to receive the OHS parking pass.
5. The OHS student parking pass will be assigned to a specific student and a specific vehicle. Students
are responsible for notifying security if they have driven a different vehicle to school. Students
who drive a different vehicle to school without reporting it to security are subject to consequences
from the school. Any violation will be subject to the OHS Parking Policies and Consequences for the
16-17 School Year.
6. Only one pass per family will be issued.
7. Students who falsify any information will be subject to disciplinary action.
